Managing our mental health 18:15 - Feb 6 with 47444 viewsKeithHaynes

This works. We shouldn’t forget our responsibilities to ourselves.

1. Value yourself:
Treat yourself with kindness and respect, and avoid self-criticism. Make time for your hobbies and favorite projects, or broaden your horizons. Do a daily crossword puzzle, plant a garden, take dance lessons, learn to play an instrument or become fluent in another language.

2. Take care of your body:
Taking care of yourself physically can improve your mental health. Be sure to:
Eat nutritious meals
Avoid smoking and vaping-- see Cessation Help
Drink plenty of water
Exercise, which helps decrease depression and anxiety and improve moods
Get enough sleep. Researchers believe that lack of sleep contributes to a high rate of depression in people.

3. Surround yourself with good people:
People with strong family or social connections are generally healthier than those who lack a support network. Make plans with supportive family members and friends, or seek out activities where you can meet new people, such as a club, class or support group.

4. Give yourself:
Volunteer your time and energy to help someone else. You'll feel good about doing something tangible to help someone in need – and it's a great way to meet new people.

5. Learn how to deal with stress:
Like it or not, stress is a part of life. Practice good coping skills: Try One-Minute Stress Strategies, do Tai Chi, exercise, take a nature walk, play with your pet or try journal writing as a stress reducer. Also, remember to smile and see the humor in life. Research shows that laughter can boost your immune system, ease pain, relax your body and reduce stress.

6. Quiet your mind:
Try meditating, Mindfulness and/or prayer. Relaxation exercises and prayer can improve your state of mind and outlook on life. In fact, research shows that meditation may help you feel calm and enhance the effects of therapy.

7. Set realistic goals:
Decide what you want to achieve academically, professionally and personally, and write down the steps you need to realize your goals. Aim high, but be realistic and don't over-schedule. You'll enjoy a tremendous sense of accomplishment and self-worth as you progress toward your goal.

8. Break up the monotony:
Although our routines make us more efficient and enhance our feelings of security and safety, a little change of pace can perk up a tedious schedule. Alter your jogging route, plan a road-trip, take a walk in a different park, hang some new pictures or try a new restaurant.

9. Avoid alcohol and other drugs:
Keep alcohol use to a minimum and avoid other drugs. Sometimes people use alcohol and other drugs to "self-medicate" but in reality, alcohol and other drugs only aggravate problems.

10. Get help when you need it:
Seeking help is a sign of strength – not a weakness. And it is important to remember that treatment is effective. People who get appropriate care can recover from mental illness and addiction and lead full, rewarding lives.

mate might have a mental health problem!

don't make that a big thing.

I don't hate anyone who posts against me I think we are all unique and individual.

Children - play therapy
Adults - talk therapy

Just seen it now while surfing about on the net butt, so you don't treat everyone the same, just like I thought, but there again 'what do I know'

My wife in the course of her work has just secured funding for the launch of a man's shed in Swansea.
It will be located in the pavilion of Victoria Saints Bowls Green, Victoria Park Swansea.
The purpose of a man's shed is to provide a safe place for men to meet and chat with other men.
It is common for men often to bottle things up and not to talk.
Mens sheds have been set up at various locations in recent years.

After our launch next month of our man's shed there will be brief chats by people on a range of subjects affecting men such as mental health and a range of other subjects.
If you require any further information personal message me and I would be pleased to assist in any way possible.

A fantastic initiative, possibly start another thread highlighting this to make as many people as possible aware of facility.

The Mens Shed will no doubt evolve over time and who knows may involve a variation to its running times.
Keep tabs just in case 👍

There’s a fair few who need to get off social media who need to find a connection.

Can’t help but think this could save lives tbh.

I was struggling for a few years, lost interest in most things and just went to work and stayed in, just bored with life and couldn't be bothered.
I never had a light bulb moment, but I did realise that I was becoming a right grumpy old bastard and didn't find joy in anything. However now that i'm typing this out, I do think the wife might have mentioned something .

Anyway, I thought, what's pissing me off, and the things that have helped me have been, watching much less T.V., because there's way too much misery on there, the news, soaps, miserable mini series and so on. I don't read newspapers anymore, and I've really cut down on twitter and "friends" on facebook. I try to relax when driving and just let the idiots go, you're so unlikely to see them again, it's not worth it.

So these days, I walk to work and listen to a podcast or some music. I make sure my family come first, they are my priority so i ignore toxic people. I enjoy cooking, and i never thought i would say that. I listen to music instead of tv, it's just so much better, but the main thing i've done is make just a few hours of me time (believe me, i never thought i would go with a buzz phrase ). Also, as I hate Saturday night tv and the wife loves it, i go in to the kitchen, cook a meal for us and have a drink, sometimes wine, sometimes gin, but mostly beer, I'm currently in to Belgian beer, I don't drink heavily, and not every week, but it's something to look forward to.
My next goal is weight loss, so it's looking for healthy recipes and drinking more water, but not on Saturdays .
All the best to everyone out there and if you need help, bloody ask.
We are here.

A wonderful post, where have you been ?

I used to get annoyed with people that disagreed with me, so this was one of the things i took a break from. It wasn't their fault, it was definitely mine .

But we all love the Swans on here and thankfully, we will see the game in a different way, as it would be pretty boring otherwise.

Nice to be back though.

Have had much banter and comments recently , now soon to be 68 years old and still want to be working at your age , give it up take your Private pension scheme and enjoy life .

No , luckily get a few brain cells still functioning and want to get out of my single lifestyle and do something positive whilst the grey matter is still alert and functioning .

So sit in the house watching daytime crap tele , watching the rain fall all the time and go down the pub later to discuss ballocks with other all dayers .

Now find as older and seen it all before in my past career sadly youngsters are so less confident and outgoing these days , peer pressure or got to do well or classed as failed .

Tin hat time again , youngsters now even on the shop floor cannot get away from their phones , checking messages and posts non stop .

Not the root cause of geniune problems but not making it any easier for the next generation.

I wonder if mental health issues are more prevalent in modern times ?, I dont know if it is or isn't, there certainly is more focus on it than in the past.
