Southern football pecking order on 09:39 - May 10 by 130yrs_and_one_Cup | Were you alive when your club actually won something? Because most Pompey fans were. Like I say, you've gotta win stuff when you are top dogs, and Pompey always seem to do that. |
Bizarrely, you are correct about the fans. The reason most Pompey fans were alive when you last won something is because most of your fans tend to be a bit older. Kids from the area tend to support other teams these days - Prem teams - like Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd etc - European teams like Barca or Real Madrid. Their local 'massively underachieving' 3rd division team don't get a look in, it is embarrassing to support them, or perhaps if you are lucky, they are kids' 2nd teams to make their Dads happy !! :-) You only have to go to Gunwharf Quays or Southsea (during the season) to see the vast array of non-Pompey shirts on display. Local kids don't support Pompey - FACT !! Until you get promoted, regardless of how successful you have been in the past, you will always be behind the likes of Saints, Brighton and Bournemouth in the pecking order. Finishing below the likes of MKD, Oxford, Wycombe and Plymouth suggests that there is still a long way to go before you start to get the local youngsters on board !! | |
