QPR V WBA match thread. on 21:55 - Jan 15 by VancouverHoop | According to Warbs the fourth official was right there, and didn't see it as a foul. There also wasn't much of a response from our players, or our bench. It was certainly a nasty incident, and a very scary one but not necessarily intentional. |
In hindsight this is what makes you realise it, thankfully, wasnt as serious as it looked in the stands. The players definitely werent visibly distressed on the pitch after they'd been over to see him, as you might expect they would be if it was. Definitely still a scary incident, especially witnessing it "live"
QPR V WBA match thread. on 22:34 - Jan 15 with 1646 views | dmm | Watching the game online I immediately thought it was a red. There's no attempt to play the ball, just the man, and it was dangerous play regardless of how close the advertising hoarding was. I'd be interested in PinnerPaul's assessment.

QPR V WBA match thread. on 22:25 - Jan 15 by WatfordR | Personally. I think it's a bit like saying if the pitch was 5 yards longer, the ball may not have gone out for a goal kick or a corner. It's foul play, it's dangerous, it's a red. |
It's exactly like that. If the grass around the pitch was a couple of yards wider Barbet would have got no worse than a face full of turf. Even though the challenge was exactly the same. The incident is based on the contact not the result. Foul, yellow card. Sure. If it was seen as a genuine intent to injure, I'm pretty damn certain there'd have been a stronger response from our coaching staff and players.

Rewatching it I think its a red because its endangering an opponent by deliberately shoving him toward something very close, hard, and solid. True in a bigger ground Barbet hits the floor and nothing more, but in that scenario his H&S hasnt been put into jeopardy, so you wouldnt judge it the same. Context is everything here IMO.

Great that Barbet got up with a heavily bandaged head and owned Dike for the rest of the game. [Post edited 15 Jan 2022 23:35]

In the cold light of the next day I think the lad Dike was shaken up by this and that affected him for the rest of the match. We see this type of incident in nearly every game a defender shields the ball out for a GK and gets a shove in the back for his trouble to eat the grass Dike was a young lad making his debut at a super charged time and, I personally think he never realised what he did, and hence the same reason the muted reaction by all Saying all that it ai is the very least a talk to him from the ref I felt, and possibly a yellow. If a red was given I could understand it as it could have ended very differently for Barbet.

True. I thought a couple of challenges from Dunne also softened him up a touch.

QPR V WBA match thread. on 22:10 - Jan 15 by OldPedro | Looks like a foul to me - deliberate shoulder to the middle of the back. No intention to get the ball. Not sure what Dikes reaction was about?? |
his reaction straight after doing it suggests he has lost it. You can't be having that.

and a 2nd yellow on Mr Dickies cake, not the best idea!

QPR V WBA match thread. on 17:36 - Jan 15 by BrianMcCarthy | I think that's reasonable - a free kick and maybe a yellow, but no red. |
As I said elsewhere. I think players DO have duty of care to opponents, based on the circumstances of the situtaion. For example, a bouncing high ball, you can play it with feet if opponent not near, but you can't if he is. A little shove like this, isn't 'reckless' in the middle of the pitch but with Barbet heading towards the edge of the pitch (and the hoardings) I think it is. Yellow and free kick for me - just the throw was the wrong call fin an otherwise good game from him (the ref) I thought.
