Flybe 23:37 - Mar 4 with 5754 views1ASIN12

Looking likely that another airline is going bust.

This could have a major impact in the region as not only do local business people and holiday makers use Flybe from Southampton airport it also counts for about 90% of flights fro the airport.

Troubling times for all those connected.

Bad news for all of those that either work at Southampton Airport or those working for FLYBE, plus all the many businesses who supply these companies

All have been compleely let down by our new Chacellor (who comes from Southampton & Government, going back on previous promises

this could be the death of Southampton Airport

as a regularly user of the Airport and Flybe flghts just hope another operator comes in and takes over many of the flifght slots and maintains the employment of many of the workers involved

It sounds horrendous for Soton airport. I've done quite a lot of regional flights from Soton and flights are nearly always full (ok, early morning and evening flights for business) so it must be down to bad management

Must be horrible if you work at the airport. 95% of flight were Flybe. Are they still sponsoring football teams?

I'm not sure why Greta gets so much grief. She's a kid who has gone from nowhere to being the poster girl for climate awareness. I can't see how that is anything but a good thing. I can barely get my kids to do anything at all !
Surely provoking discussions at a global level to protect future generations can only be a good thing. She's doing what the politicians fail to do. The fact that protests and rallies attract so many people shows that the message resonates with people. Or is it that old people think that Greta is just trying to stop them flying to Spain for their holidays??

Why are they going bust? Is it economy based or massively effected by COVID - 19

You're nothing but a lot of talk n'a' badge.

One would’ve hoped that now we live in a Brexit utopia that this could have been averted. Terrible news for everyone connected with Flybe.

Am (was!) booked to come over from Jersey for the game on Saturday so very p*issed off. Flight of £140 plus match ticket at £45 down the tubes. There are no other options under £400 at the moment.

Always hated Flybe. Very badly run company.

Weren't Virgin in heavy talks with them a short while ago?

Flybe on 10:12 - Mar 5 with 3795 viewsSonicBoom

Virgin and others bought them out in January didn't they so they avoided going bust for a while but I think it was tied to geting a loan from the government of 100 million which never materialised.

@Winchester I guess you could flog your match ticket to get some of your money back

I’d’ve thought the airport will be okay in the long run- someone else will snap up the slots and routes. Since the third runway at LHR was denied there has been talk of expanding regional airports instead so there must be demand that could fill the void left by Flybe.

Rather than Sunak waking up one morning and deciding ‘fukk ‘em’ it is more probable this poorly run company has failed to convince the government it can pay back the £100m. Hardly the government’s fault.

Speaking of Sunak, it's going to be fascinating to see what next week's Budget brings.

Don't envy anyone trying to navigate the 'bumps in the road' of EU withdrawal and virus related downturn, while at the same time trying to 'level up' the red wall and keep the Tory base in the south happy.

Will be the first real indication of what this Johnson govt will be all about. Tax cuts, tax rises, less austerity, more borrowing...who knows?!...

shame flybe wasn't a bank, thousands losing their jobs directly and indirectly , and people left with no flights or alternatives in places like the Channel Islands and Newquay

If it was the Government would have bent over backwards to help a bank out, and the Bank's would still pay bonuses to high paid staff

Banks have a completely different place in the economy (ie without them there pretty much isn’t one) when compared to a single company providing one very specific service.

There will be a gap but at some point the planes will be bought up along with the routes and landing slots and business will resume.

Apart from given to higher echelons bonus's the govt should have bailed them out because of the regionalisation effects this is going to have, particularly the south west and even to us in the mid south.

It was apparently badly run being the main reason for the downfall (Coronavisrus just a smoke screen although obviously has had some affect) but there must have been alternatives rather than just let them go or even dare I say Nationalisation some format as was done with RBS and then when back on even keel go back to private ownership in some way. There are others on here that would know more about how to do that but they shouldn't cut us off completely

Agree with the General about flying less, but what alternatives are there for essential flights? An 8 or 9 hour train journey each way costing an absolute fortune resulting also in overnight stays or there and back in a day with an hour ish each way flight for about £120 or something or even cheaper if well planned

Flybe partner Blue Islands to run 'uninterrupted'

"A franchise partner of Flybe which flies to the Channel Islands has said it will operate "uninterrupted" despite the UK airline's collapse.

Blue Islands runs flights from Jersey and Guernsey to Bristol, Southampton, London City, East Midlands and Newquay.

It said it was "saddened" byFlybe's collapseand would put on additional flights to Exeter and Birmingham on Thursday to help passengers.

Exeter-based Flybe went into administration on Wednesday.

Blue Islands said in a statement that any Flybe passengers with an existing booking would be flown for free on a "first come, first served basis"."

They leased too many planes at high rents and then undertook an IT "Upgrade" that has screwed up their business processes. Not sure what more the management could have done to screw things up

I'm sure there is a way to blame Brexit …………….

Flybe on 12:35 - Mar 5 with 3586 viewsdirk_doone

I think the important thing is that we all continue to celebrate Brexit. If airlines and travel companies close down, it will help us to isolate ourselves even more from Europe so it's a cause for even further celebration. This will be even further enhanced by the collapse of the pound as well as share prices, which will mean nobody will be able to afford to travel to Europe anyway. We'll be well and truly out of it at last.
