As far as I'm concerned the point is tha the opposition have an ethical and professional responsibility to have some kind of idea about what their stance on these things is. If we go with what Diane is saying their thinking is in such a formative stage that's it's the equivalent of one of us watching the news and saying 'it's difficult...bit of a conundrum.... wouldn't want to be in their shoes'. Labour - Don't seem to grasp the economy....everything is free, blame the rich....we'll fix everything if we tax them more. Some good policies but no idea how they would ever fund them without running up huge debts.
Tories - for the first time ever, I would struggle to back them. Old, dated, out of touch.
Liberals - Not a great fan of old man Cable but their policies are pretty balanced. Drives me mad that they are still banging on about stopping Brexit. Its going to happen, they would be far better off focusing on taking votes from the other main parties.
UKIP - all but dead

You guys dismissing Labour under Corbyn are the real mugs. Corbyn and McDonnell have developed a range of policies which when presented even to Tory voters without a party label receive pretty much overwhelming support.
No-one, not one of you, if you take your cues from the mainstream media (buzzword alert) have any basis to dismiss Labour as this or that. You are, I am afraid, receiving pro-Tory "news" from the BBC (Look at who runs BBC News if you don't believe me), from the vast majority of the newspapers and other television stations too. Even the so called left wing papers like The Guardian and The Independent are consistently anti-Corbyn without so much as a regular consideration of Labour policies.
I have a couple of suggestions:
1. Have a look at actual Labour policy development.
2. Listen to what the Labour leadership actually say, rather than what is reported.
3. Compare Corbyn and McDonnell's positions to those of mainstream parties elsewhere in Europe....... take Scandinavian countries for example, and see where that leaves the assumption that these guys are in some way "extreme" or deluded.
4. Above all, for goodness sake have a sober look at the Tory record since 2010, and then have a look around the corner at what is likely to happen to the economy in the near future.
Then come back and tell me what is so bad - compared to the Tories mind you, rather than to what we actually need which is something considerably more radical than Corbyn and Labour- about a National Health Service not being privatised but properly funded; a National Education Service; an end to student debt; an industrial policy worthy of the name; taking back into public ownership parts of the economy which our neighbours would NEVER allow foreign companies to run and run into the ground.
We, my friends, are in a country on the verge of another recession, with a currency getting weaker by the month, non-existent manufacturing, homelessness rising, child poverty rising, local government and public services in free fall, a foreign policy which consists of doing what Trump wants and alienating ourselves from the world's largest free trade area, whilst we manage to find enough money to bomb Syria for no good reason. And this leads to the conclusion that Labour would be "just as bad"......... well, ffs! It's not that you're not paying attention, it's that you've got the boss's cock in your mouth.
I'm not a Labour member, but I'm ashamed we live in a country where people rely on food banks. Time was we would all have been ashamed of it. I don't have time for politicians, but I know Corbyn and McDonnell actually care about hungry children and the working poor.
Will everything get better all at once under Labour? No, don't be childish, but the Tories don't care if the majority of us live or die, they are blood sucking ba*tards, and worse than that they are incompetent, racist, bloodsucking ba*tards........... if you can't figure that out by reading between the lines and seeing how badly they are "negotiating" with the EU at the moment then there really is no hope.......... turn the telly back on and swallow the sh*t the BBC chucks out. |  |

I actually read Labour's last election manifesto and tried to keep track of how much they wanted to borrow to turn Britain into a socialist paradise. I lost count at £750 billion. As for Abbott, I wouldn't trust her to run a bath, let alone a department of state. The Labour leadership were hauled over the coals in the right wing press for apparently not being hard enough on Maduro's Government. They never said that the UK should emulate Venezuela.

Really? You need to go back to understand the chronology of events before just assuming that the current government is to blame or that Labour can do better.
In June 2009, the landing cards were earmarked for destruction with work beginning in December of that year. Alan Johnson was the Labour Home Secretary at the time.
Although the decision was made in 2009, the landing cards were disposed of in October 2010, when the Conservative-Lib Dem Coalition government were in power. Theresa May was Home Secretary at the time.
In 2014 the Immigration Act 2014 brought in new powers to help the Home Office and other government agencies make life difficult for illegal migrants. Some are now claiming that these policies have been unfairly damaging and intrusive to people who are here legally, including the Windrush generation.
So you see all 3 of the main parties have had a part to play in this debacle, hence the apathy on display in this thread. Labour's decision to destroy the landing cards is at the root of the problem and demonstrates that they absolutely can be worse than the current lot. I agree that it’s really difficult to know who to vote for. It’s important that we support public services but Labour wants to put a huge amount into cancelling tuition fees and increasing public sectors wages across the board. I know how much local councils spend on pushing up their own wages. There just seems to be no targeted plans, aimed at spending money where it is really needed.
Meanwhile the Torres equally wanted to cut taxes as a general principle even where it’s not necessary for the economy or people in general, eg inheritance tax (it’s a luxury and we can’t afford to do it) and reduce public spending without thinking about the need to sustain it in particular areas such as the NHS.
I don’t know too much about Lib Dem’s current policies but I can’t see them gaining power any time soon.
It really concerns me that we don’t have a viable opposition. I really can’t see Corbyn getting in because he has no appeal to middle England.
Meanwhile May continues on her attempt to reinvent the Thatcher years of domineering and failing to listen to cabinet colleagues while blaming them for anything that goes wrong.
The disaster of Brexit, apart from the economic disaster, means that we are even more dependent on the US for any say on the world stage.

The Labour Manifesto was costed very vaguely with the same extra taxation spent multiple times , that without the last minute bribes to students , subsequently passed off as an "aspiration"
The BBC get accused of bias from both sides . Andrew Neil is the best political journalist in the country IMO .
The Guardian and the Indy know that Corbyn would be a disaster and cant win so they want him out and a replacement in asap. I havnt bought a newspaper since the Referendum.
The Labour Manifesto is vague in many areas . If Abbot had quoted it to Piers Morgan it would have been almost as bad as what she actually said .
Compare the Scandinavian countries you mention GDP to ours , its like comparing the budget of Manchester Utd to Southend Utd.
The Torys got elected and chose austerity measures to remedy the global crisis , its taken a long time but the deficit is down and we can start to attack the debt.
The NHS is getting more money than ever before, its not enough but there is enormous waste .
Student Loan pledge was a straight 27k bribe to students ,uncosted and will result in less people being able to go as with less money the entry criteria would rise .
To bring railways under public ownership sounds great until the state has to fund research , maintenance new technology, and keep the unions that fund the government onside .
The currency is creeping back up as project fear is replaced by investment and actual facts . The stock market is almost at an all time high .
The bombing of Syria was too stop the use of chemical weapons , if you discoount the attack in Syria these weapons were used on our streets putting a policeman in hospital and endangering hundreds of people . We spend 2% of GDP on defence and used some of it .
And finally , if you think that Brexit will hurt us economically then watch what happens if Corbyn and Mcdonnell get control of the economy , they dont understand it and they will fck it up .................... IMO | | | |

We, my friends, are in a country on the verge of another recession, with a currency getting weaker by the month, non-existent manufacturing, homelessness rising, child poverty rising, local government and public services in free fall, a foreign policy which consists of doing what Trump wants and alienating ourselves from the world's largest free trade area, whilst we manage to find enough money to bomb Syria for no good reason. And this leads to the conclusion that Labour would be "just as bad"......... well, ffs! It's not that you're not paying attention, it's that you've got the boss's cock in your mouth.
I'm not a Labour member, but I'm ashamed we live in a country where people rely on food banks. Time was we would all have been ashamed of it. I don't have time for politicians, but I know Corbyn and McDonnell actually care about hungry children and the working poor.
Will everything get better all at once under Labour? No, don't be childish, but the Tories don't care if the majority of us live or die, they are blood sucking ba*tards, and worse than that they are incompetent, racist, bloodsucking ba*tards........... if you can't figure that out by reading between the lines and seeing how badly they are "negotiating" with the EU at the moment then there really is no hope.......... turn the telly back on and swallow the sh*t the BBC chucks out. |
