At the 2016 European Championships, violent clashes between Russian and English supporters in Marseille put the spotlight on Russian hooliganism.
Russian hooligans injured over 100 English supporters, beating two into a coma. It was some of the worst football violence seen at an international tournament and raised serious concerns ahead of millions of fans travelling to Russia for the 2018 World Cup.
To find out what UK football supporters could face, filmmaker Alex Stockley von Statzer travels to Russia to experience the country’s football fan culture first-hand for the BBC’s international current affairs strand This World. Featuring footage filmed in Marseille in 2016, rare interviews with members of some of the most feared firms like the Spartak Gladiators and Orel Butchers, and new footage of an organised fight for wannabe recruits.
Russia’s Hooligan Army uncovers a world where brutal violence has become a mark of honour and a symbol of newly resurgent Russian masculinity.
Most Russian hooligans have moved away from the English movement that inspired them in the 1970s and 1980s. Today they are organised in firms that are teetotal, physically fit and trained in mixed martial arts. Hooligan firms have become popular in the country and are an inspiration to many young men.
With the World Cup on the horizon, the Russian police are trying to get tough. Police have enacted new laws promising bans and jail for any fans that cause trouble and are heavily policing stadiums. Alex travels to Oryol to speak to the Orel Butchers who violently attacked English fans in Marseille. In a rare interview we hear one hooligan taking relish in describing a merciless attack by a number of Russians who kicked an England fan in the head - an attack that was also caught on camera.
Alex also travels to Rostov, which will host five games at the World Cup, to film an organised fight in the woods. Here he meets with a local firm getting ready to audition for new members. Young men fight in a no holds barred brawl against young fighters from another local firm. It’s a vicious clash similar to what was witnessed in Marseille and is one of the hundreds of fights that firms arrange all across Russia.

I went to Moscow in 2003 for the play off. It was a mental few days! We were four 18 year old lads though so it ended up being very eventful and a real eye-opener.
On the plane over we were told the word for bribe and to remember it when the police inevitably stop you in the street. We were told to watch out for brown bears, God knows what that was about. And also not to drink the vodka on sale in the street as loads of people were dying from it each year and it was counterfeit.
Anyway, the locals were miserable as sin is the first vibe we got. They looked cold and p!ssed off, proper rugged.
The first night we heard a rumour that a Welsh boy got stabbed and the local skin heads were out looking for 'english'. We stayed around Red Square and stuck to groups, got p!ssed as f*ck and lost a lot of the other welsh fans who moved on. We were chatting to the owner of the bar for hours and he was tidy enough, taking photos etc. Then 4 mafia looking blokes came in, sort of took over the place and had everything on tap for free. Booze and food. Asked us to join them and luckily it went ok, but it was a bit mad seeing that. We didn't put our hands in our pockets once they arrived.
When we staggered back to hotel there were armed guards watching us from the Kremlin as we were generally do what young p!ssed up boy do. We were told not to be drunk in red square. We saw one Welsh fan drop a fag but on the floor and got hit with a baton and fined on the spot. You were supposed to have your feet on the floor at all times whilst sitting on a bench in red square too, or so we were told. Might have been more rubbish. One of our boys got stopped by police and asked for his paperwork - visa and passport. He handed it over and the cop was just shouting at him so he handed it back and we put a note in the back I think, he took the money and we were told to move on.
Match day - There were about 1000 Wales fans in one main hotel across from red square and it got stormed by a big mob of skinheads on match day. Smoke bombs were thrown into the lobby and it all kicked off, people scarpering and the fighters running down from upstairs to help out. Lasted about 5 mins or so until it calmed down a bit and the russians left the hotel as police arrived. We were then escorted by armed police/soldiers to the game on and off the bus.
We were kept outside and could hear the anthems, this was p!ssing everyone off as you can imagine. As we got to the top tier you could see pockets of russians trying to break through the barriers to get at us. They'd won a lot of their home games up to that game by big scores so expected an easy win. We obviously got a result and that was the beginning of a top night! We were kept inside the ground as they left each section of the stadiums go one at a time. Not sure if it was true but we were told that pockets of main hooligans of each moscow side were kept separated in each section and they were up for fighting each other as well as us. Again, might have been a load of rubbish.
Got back to the hotel fine and didn't leave the place all night. As advised! Overheard a massive russian talking to one of the welsh boys arranging a fight outside 'meet by the bridge, no weapons'...that was enough for us to know we were staying in the hotel that night. There was a nightclub there so it was a quality night anyway, as well as a few bars. Pulled a tidy local and all was well! She reckoned she was the daughter of some sort of Moscow official. Her English was good anyway, she'd studied in USA. Could have been a working girl for all I knew though!
Anyway, we had a cracking weekend but it could easily have gone wrong on so many times during those 3 days. Just watch yourselves if you do go out there. I probably would go again but i'd definitely think more about what we were doing. One of the boys was so pissed he jumped in a car full of moscow locals and we lost him all night. He was dumped in a lane somewhere we found out after. |  |
