J D Sports Rochdale Expose 12:38 - Dec 14 with 11439 viewsmingthemerciless

Channel 4 News are running an expose of the working conditions at the Rochdale warehouse at 7.00 tonight. From the trailer I heard it sounds a really great place to work. Charles Dickens would be right at home.

And Fat Farnell is in line for a 51% increase in his salary. Pass the sick bucket.

The self-serving bell end will now have to pay 40% tax on his ex's instead of 20%.

Him and his mate Brett (Danczuks lapdogs) have certainly made the local Labour Party despicable. As an ex party member and voter it will take a very long time to repair the damage they are causing to Rochdale Labour Party. I hope Andy Kelly stands for MP at the next election as he will get my vote (sorry mark1).

What about the so-called 'line managers' cited in the piece? There are people in any large organisation who find their way into positions of authority over others, and use that position to confuse, degrade and demoralise the workforce.

If these people are identified, I'd fully expect the company to take action against them - anything else will demonstrate the worthlessness of their claims that they're an ethical employer.

Your telling me that the bigwigs at JD sports dont know whats going on ! Just like Mike Astley said he didnt at sports direct..
Utter gonnads.....

When we have a plethora of angencies who have gods knows how many people on their books.....

When you have a council stating you can relocate and pay your staff less here says a lot about the council and the working practices of that bakery.....

That's what Rochdale in particular and the rest of the country in general has become - A race to the bottom.

Have worked in numerous warehouse/distribution places, always on agencies. The sad fact is that this is the norm these days, and JD are no different to anybody else in that respect. Anyone who has worked at Littlewoods in Shaw or similar will know that they have been short changing staff and arbitrarily firing workers in similar fashion. And these work practices filter through to other companies who then get worse to work for, in an era when wages have fallen in real terms for nearly a decade now.

But apparently we are the generation with no work ethic and need to work harder.

Nothing will change until the penny drops and people start banding together and standing up for themselves. Trade Unions came about when our great grandfathers decided they'd had enough of being treated like shite and it was time to do something about it.

Those times have returned and until the younger generation decide they've also had enough the race to the bottom will continue.

I saw that and couldn't believe it. I think the defence is that they don't want it, but it's been suggested so they'll have to. It's a darn hard life.

That would be a great defence but it would appear that in 2013, a pay cut was suggested by the same Independent body.

In that instance, the council rejected the recommendations and all members of the recommending body were replaced.

Banding together is only possible when people have regular steady jobs with colleagues who you can depend on. Who's going to act as shop steward when the entire workforce is on zero hours, staff change every few days and many don't speak much English?

That`s right Ming, the demise of the Unions has seen the re-establishment of Dickensian conditions, slave labour and just about anything that is good for working people. All this just a few weeks after that new tart you`ve got for a Prime Minister promised a Britain that "everybody can benefit from". Yeah right, what a joke.

How did our forefathers manage to build the Labour Movement then ? They faced similar obstacles and eventually, after great hardship and sacrifice, won the day. Read your history. What we are facing today is nothing new.

I agree re RF and AB and others who are a small minority who support Danczuk still.
Re Andy Kelly, he had already stated he will stand in the newly created Littleborough and Saddleworth seat, of the ones created by the Boundary Commission, so depending where in the current constituency you live, you might not have the chance to vote for him.

The expenses rise , especially at a time when Council workers are being restricted in their pay rises , is a disgrace.

I'm not telling you anything, simply posing the question. What happens as a result of the 'expose' will answer the question - although JD might just replace the current bunch of bullies with another lot

Other posters have mentioned unions. When the union bosses stop lining their own pockets, perhaps more people might be inclined to view them as a positive force rather than the negative force they became during the latter part of the 20th century

But is it better to try and attract jobs at £15k than not to try?

You mention mental gymnastics, but your links quote Cllr Lambert along the lines of "... this is an insult to hardworking families..." - what if those 'families' aren't working at all?

Rochdale has an unemployment rate above both the national and North West average:

https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/reports/lmp/la/1946157085/printable.aspx

No-one wants the town to become a centre for zero-hours contracts, but decent jobs at £15k are surely worth trying to attract, given that the cost of living locally IS lower than where the bakery is currently situated?

Kingsway business park was supposed to be a high tech haven, bringing high wage jobs to boost the economy locally. Despite the money chucked at it this never happened. Good to know the role of the park is to contribute to the race to the bottom, bringing wages down. £15k a good income, I doubt that would cover your bar bill for a month

Andy Kelly is a decent man, but after the way they went into bed with Cameron and co natonally , they have lost a lot of support and trust. A lot of former Lib voters in the town have stopped supporting them or have died, as a lot were elderly. The anti Lab vote is split, with no real clear indication yet who will be in the best position to contest them. As it stands I would predict a big majority again for LP, but with reduced majority from the freak result of 2015. Lib Dems will surely gain back a few thousand from that low point. Labour will lose votes if the Balderstone and Kirkholt Ward moves out of the constituency, but so will UKIP.

Lib Dems of course have most of their current strength in the Pennine seats of Milnrow etc, and thus will pose their biggest threat to Lab there, in the new Littleborough and Saddlworth seat.

The old Littleborough and Saddleworth seat was held by Geoffrey Dickens for a long time until he died. With a good candidate it could well be a Tory target seat. I think councillor Dearnley would be a good choice, but I doubt he will stand.

Although I do not agree with him on much Andrew Kelly comes across as a genuine bloke who is in politics for the right reasons, unlike most of the councillors in Rochdale who are their to feather their own nests and serve their cronies.

Looking at the election results I see a Mr Brett had an unsuccessful attempt at getting elected.

Anybody with half a brain can see that would be the thin end of the wedge. This is what the managing director, passenger services said earlier this year about the train drivers - " We have to break them ", adding that those who resisted the plans should " Get the hell out of my industry ".

If people aren't prepared to defend their jobs and conditions of employment they can expect more of the J D Sports style treatment.

Agree with your (and others) comments re Andrew Kelly

I had the pleasure to get to know him via the ill-fated Dale Co-op initiative last year. He comes across as genuine, modest and thoughtful. He'd make a good MP but would stand out in Westminster politics like a sore thumb.
