Saints Linked With Liverpool Attacker They Lost Out On In January

Back in January Saints tried to sign a number of attacking players as they looked to boost their options for the Promotion run in, they ended up with David Brooks from Bournemouth, but it seems he is now not on the list and they are looking to get the man they lost out on.

When David Brooks arrived on loan from Bournemouth in January, the rumour mill had it that he wasn't Russell Martin's first choice, that honour went to Liverpool's Fabio Carvalho, who opted to go to Hull City ahead of Saints, as he thought it would offer him more game time.

Now southamptonfcnews are claiming that Carvalho could be on the move again the the summer and with Hull still stuck in the Championship, Saints are in a better position to get his services.

But it won't be right away, Carvalho is still highly rated by Liverpool and the feeling is that they will use the first weeks of the pre season programme to take a closer look at him before deciding on his future.

Whether that future is at Anfield or elsewhere either on another loan or a personal deal will perhaps not be decided till the early weeks of August as the Premier league season looms.

According to the report, Southampton are one of the clubs credited with interest, as well as former club Fulham, Leicester City and clubs in Germany, France, Spain and Holland.

Last season Carvalho had an aborted loan spell with RB Leipzig in the first half of the season, before being recalled and Saints battled Hull for his services, he opted for Hull and he scored 9 plus 2 assists in 20 games at Hull; including a goal in the Tigers victory at St Mary's back in February, that compares with David Brooks's 2 goals and 5 assists in his 17 games for Saints.

Carvalho who will turn 22 in August has not yet fulfilled his undoubted potential, but his stats look good for Fulham, Liverpool, RB Leipzig and latterly Hull, he has played around 100 competitive games in competitions from the Championship, the Premier League, FA & EFL Cups and even the Champions League, he has scored 24 goals plus 10 assists.

Able to play down both flanks, as an attacking central midfielder and even up front, he is another of those players that Saints look for, those that can play in different positions.

This rumour could have legs, after Southampton were keen back in January, but the stumbling block may be Liverpool's desire to take a look at him under their new manager, that will take time and Saints will be keen to get a deal done in July rather than late August.
