Southampton Legend Steven Davis Retires

Steven Davis signed for Saints from Glasgow Rangers in the summer of 2012 and in 6 & a bit seasons at St Mary's would become one of the best signings that the club have made in the past souple of decades, so I'm sure all Southampton supporter wish him a Happy Retirement.

Steven Davis has announced his retirement from football after being sidelined for over a year with a knee injury.

The 37 year old has enjoyed a long career with Aston Villa, Fulham, Glasgow Rangers, Southampton and finally Glasgow Rangers again playing over 450 League games for those clubs and adding another 160 or so in cup competitions.

He joined Saints as they returned to the Premier League, scoring on his debut at Manchester City and going on to start 160 Premier League games for the club plus another 33 off the bench scoring 12 goals.

He would also play 10 FA Cup games, 16 League cup games and 7 games in Europe, adding another 2 goals in the process.

But scoring wasn't the biggest part of his game, at the start of his career he was very much an unsung hero, but as time passed the St Mary's faithful came to appreciate the way he would anchor and control the midfield, win the ball and pass it short didn't win the plaudits but it helped Saints win games.

Perhaps his greatest season was 2016/17 when after helping Saints to 6th place in the Premier League, our best placing for over 30 years, he was pivotal in our run to the final of the League Cup.

After leaving Southampton in January 2019, initially on loan and then permanently in the summer of that year, he would go on to play another 100 SPL games for the Gers, as well as playing in the Europa League Final in 2022.

Sadly it would be injury that cut his career short and after playing his last game for the Gers, after a year on the sidelines he has decided to call it a day.

He also played a 140 times for Northern Ireland, a number that makes him the highest capped player for any of the four UK home nations.

I am sure that all Southampton supporters will join me in thanking Steven Davis for his time at the club and wishing him all the best in whatever he chooses to do after ending his playing career, whether that is staying in football or pursuing a career outside of the game may he have a long and happy life.
