Southampton Set To Lose 2 Players To African Cup Of Nations
Saints are set to lose 2 of their squad in January to the African Cup of Nations, but it is not as bad as Leicester city who could lose 5 of their squad, read on for the full details.
Saints could lose Joe Aribo & Kamaldeen Sulemana for AFCON which runs from January 13th to February 11th inclusive, Aribo has been named in Nigeria's provisional squad and Sulemana in Ghana's, although Sulemana's fitness may be an issue.
A few weeks ago most would have said Aribo would be no real loss, but in recent week's he has been a good strong squad player as injury kicks in.
But it is Leicester who will perhaps be hardest hit with 5 of their squad set to be selected for their countries for AFCON and also the Asian cup which runs at around the same time.
The Foxes will be potentially missing Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho will be in for Nigeria, and the same for Patson Daka and Zambia. Harry Souttar is also highly likely to be called up to the Australia squad for the Asian Cup in Qatar, the 5th player is Abdul Fatawu who has been named in Ghana’s preliminary squad for Afcon this week and is likely to make the cut for the final 23.
Not all though are regulars for Leicester Daka has only made 5 appearances but scored 2 goals, Ndididi has played 18 with 2 goals, Iheanacho played 18 with 5 goals, Fatawu 18 with 2 goals and Soutar just 2 appearances with no goals.
January will be the time when the depth of squad will count and Leicester could well find it tough going with some of their key players missing, not to mention suspensions and injuries.
