Saints don't seem to be content with signing striker Ross Stewart from Sunderland, reports from the North East suggest that they have put cash on the table for a second member of Tony Mowbray's squad.
Former Celtic winger Patrick Roberts is the man whom Southampton want say footballscotland.co.uk
26 year old Roberts was linked with a return to Celtic, but with that having fallen through and like Stewart now in the last year of his contract, he is seemingly on Saints radar.
According to Sky Sports, the offer is around £3million to start with plus £2million in guaranteed add-ons.
Roberts could be considered something of a child prodigy, starting at Fulham, having just turned 17 he made his debut in March 2014 as a substitute against Manchester City in the Premier League, he would play 19 league games for the Cottagers
A year later and City had signed him for a fee of around £12 million, however in his first season 1 Premier League and a few cup appearances was his limit in the first half of the season and he went to Celtic on loan in January 2016.
He would spend 2 1/2 years on loan at Parkhead and on return to the Etihad he would be once again sent out on loan, Girona, Norwich, Middlesbrough, Derby and then Troyes would all be called home for a while before in January 2022 he would join Sunderland on loan followed by a permanent 2 year deal.
Last season he flourished playing 42 times and scoring 5 goals in the Championship and now it seems he could be plying his trade at St Mary's.
At 26 he has never quite captured the form that his talent suggested when Manchester City signed him, but now it seems he could be about to, perhaps at Southampton.
