I dreamed of Pompey moments like late winner against Wombles

Danny Cowley said Pompey's ability to use the unjust penalty they conceded in their favour - rather than stew on it - was key to victory over AFC Wimbledon at Fratton Park.

Ollie Palmer's spot kick - given for what most in the ground felt was a dive by a Dons attacker - gave them the lead at the interval but the Blues battled back and won 2-1 thanks to second half strikes by Michael Jacobs and Marcus Harness.

Cowley told the media afterwards: 'A lot went against us in the first half and we could have easily become victims, but we didn’t do that. I was determined — regardless of the result — not to talk about refereeing decisions, but it’s easier to do that when you win!

'I’d rather put my focus onto our players and supporters, who were magnificent and definitely played their part. When I closed my eyes and dreamt about becoming Pompey manager, it was for moments like what happened at the end.

'We were actually playing well before the penalty decision and created a lot of chances, needing to be more ruthless. But we lost our discipline for a bit after that and have to do better, then regained our composure going into the break.

'The messaging was clear and we either put our energy into being disappointed and moaning about decisions or you direct it in a positive way. We chose the latter and although it wasn’t perfect, we fought hard and knew that if we could find one goal, we’d likely find a second.

'AFC Wimbledon are an energetic, fizzy side, who play with a real intensity and don’t give you a moment to relax. It was great for Michael to get the equaliser — and I’m delighted for him — before a fantastic late finish from Marcus.'

Cowley and his players aim to build on the win this week with League One trips to Lincoln and Gillingham.
