It is little surprise to anyone but now Southampton Football Club have officially confirmed that Victor Wanyama has left the club for Tottenham Hotspur.
Last August when Spurs started their disgraceful behaviour to unsettle Victor Wanyama, it was clear from the players behaviour that it was only a matter of time before he went to White Hart Lane.
Saints fended off the offer back then and stoutly refused to sell Wanyama no matter how much he held his breath and stamped his feet and that proved to be the right decision as was shown at the end of the season we finished sixth and qualified for Europe.
What it showed though is that in modern football the player holds all the cards, it is all about ow long is left on the contract and the stark reality is that unless you are willing to break the bank for a player then if he is successful then he is going to get better offer than you can afford and he will leave.
That is not the fault of Saints, they have done all they can, it does not show a lack of ambition, in fact the opposite, it shows the club are realistic, if they try to take on the big clubs in a straight fight pound for pound in a bidding war, they are always going to lose, in fact it is a recipe for disaster, the likes of Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and the Manchester clubs can afford to throw big money season after season and in many cases watch it go down the drain.
Saints cannot do that, we therefore have to keep on with the strategy we have adopted, that means getting in players, developing them and then selling them when the time is right, that has worked for us over the past few years, indeed it could be said going back to the 1950's and 60's when Ted Bates started to built the club to the power it is now.
That means it can sometimes hurt when we see the likes of Wanyama leave, but it is another step forward, we are taking three steps forward and yes one step back, but we are moving forward.
On his day Wanyama was an asset to Saints, there were some games he was immense, but there were many others where he wasn't and he seemed to have a lack of self control that saw him get three red cards last season.
It will be interesting to see how Wanyama fits in at Spurs, there are some who say he will not fit their style of play, that he and Dier cannot play in the same side, we will soon find out.
