Dan once again gives us his opinion as Saints record their third win a row to jump into sixth place and set p a grandstand finish o the season.
The "Super Saints” recorded their 3rd win in a row after beating title-challengers Tottenham away at White Hart Lane with another fantastic performance.
It was unknown which Spurs side would show up following their disappointment on Monday losing the title to Leicester at Stamford Bridge. Unfortunately for the Saints it was the impressive, title-challenging Tottenham that I’ve been very impressed with throughout the season.
Like always the home team dominated possession making it difficult for the Saints to get a shot at goal. A fantastic early save from Fraser Forster saved the away side from going down early on. However, Forster made a mistake ten minutes later resulting in the opening goal of the game, for Spurs.
Southampton did start to get into the game by keeping possession in Tottenham’s half but couldn’t get any shots off.
The Saints got a great chance when Steven Davis made a great run but Dusan Tadic didn’t look when he passed meaning the attack fizzled out. Tadic should’ve done better in my opinion.
The Tadic-Davis combination did work eventually when Steven Davis equalised with his 3rd goal of the season. I think Hugo Lloris should’ve done better but I’ll always take a goal for the Saints.
It seemed like the first half would end with Southampton on the front-foot but a greedy Harry Kane missed a glorious chance when he was found in a one-on-one position with Fraser Forster but the England international saved Southampton once again with two consecutive saves. Half time: 1-1.
It was a game where chances weren’t taken for the Saints, especially when Sadio Mane was found into a tight one-on-one position with players behind him. Instead of shooting he tried to hold the ball in the area but a defender cleared the attack.
Another opportunity was when Shane Long took the ball off of a Spurs defender but referee, John Moss said Long committed a foul on the defender,
a harsh decision I think. He also missed a glorious chance when a great ball from Tadic reached him in the box but he headed wide.
Even when Spurs continued to dominate possession, Southampton eventually took the lead with clever passing resulting in Steven Davis finishing into the bottom corner, getting his second of the match.
Saints fans had their hearts in their mouths as Spurs tried to equalise in the remaining 20 minutes of the match. A bad pass from Wanyama following a free-kick deep in added time put Spurs’ Nancer Chadli one-on-one with Forster but he kept it out, winning the match for Saints.
I thought that some players didn’t perform as well as they have done recently but the defenders were fantastic but my Man of the Match has to be Steven Davis. He passed the ball well and also got Southampton’s two goals.
The Saints have now equalled last season’s record point tally, this time with one more game to play. Now in the top-six, Southampton are looking likely to make one final push to qualify for Europe with other teams having games in hand. The final game of the season against Palace is set to have an electric atmosphere, especially if results go our way.
