A guide to the Student Quarter in Southampton
Visiting football fans to Southampton are highly unlikely to venture into the land of the student, but for those that like their beer cheap and the company raucous, here is a quick run down of where to go.
The main drag for students is Bevois Valley, to the North East of the City Centre this mile long road runs from St Mary's Road to the edge of Portswood, it has a plethora of pubs and clubs alongside several curry houses and take aways, but be warned some of them will require student ID for admittance (the pubs that is not the takeaways)
Starting at the City end of the Valley, Kaos is a student nightclub and requires student ID to get in, proceeding down Onslow Road, past the Oliver Goldsmith and into the Valley you come to The Dorchester, a pub with a late licence and specialising in live Indie Bands and music and on the opposite side of the road Lennons.
The Bevois Castle is a old style pub with real ales and a less studenty atmosphere.
Further on is The Dungeon a nightclub that as the name suggests attracts a more gothic clientelle, past this and you have a selection of run of the mill pubs and bars until you arrive at The Hobbit.
The Hobbit is a large pub on several levels and features live music and DJ's etc, at the back is a large open air beer garden into which drinkers spill in the summer months, with a late licence its been a big player in the local scene for 15 years or so.
Visiting football supporters are probably not going to come into this area of town, but never the less its a vibrant area and if you can put up with drunk students vomitting into the road doesnt have the usual violent overtones associated with some areas of a major City.
