Former Striker McCrory Dies

Former Town inside forward Sammy McCrory has died aged 86. McCrory scored 42 goals in 103 games for the Blues between 1950 and 1952.

Belfast-born McCrory was a member of the Northern Ireland squad which reached the 1958 World Cup quarter-finals but won only a single cap, against England at Wembley in 1957 when he scored a goal in a 3-2 victory.

He joined the Blues from Swansea Town in March 1950 for a fee of £5,250 and moved on to Plymouth Argyle in August 1952 for £6,000.

McCrory was the Blues’ top scorer in 1950/51 when he netted 21 goals and the following season was Town’s top league scorer with 16. He also played for Linfield, Southend, Cambridge and Crusaders.

After retiring, he ran a pub in Donaghadee, County Down, which was opened by George Best in 1969.
