I distinctly remember viewing Bloomberg around the Hoddle/ Strachan era when we were enjoying some success in the Premiership the first time around and we were quoted as the 9th most supported club in England. We seem to have dropped a little since then.

I have a theory that the position a team finishes in the league is related to this figure. Various random events affect it in the short term; good players (Le Tiss), good management (Cloughie), good investment good business model etc. And the reverse is true too, Leeds etc. All other considerations are available to be earned on an equal basis, tv rights etc so the only fixed quantity and springboard to success is support and the money that it earns.
Saints previous management seemed to alienate their supporters and thereby started the downward spiral that we saw. The current management has obviously put bums on seats and have a business model that will see the club grow from its youth product. Currently, the players are not quite good enough to achieve 12th in the league but there has been insufficient time to resolve that issue as yet, but it will come I'm sure. With the demise of Portsmouth and the possible demotion of Reading to a lower level, the attendance at St Marys will increase and if prem survival occurs this year, which is easily possible, then I should think Cortese will look at expanding the ground or even relocating it and moving on from 12th towards the Euro positions.

I read somewhere last year that the Championship (silly name?) has the best average attendance for a second league in the world.

As for your theory Slynch, there is a lot of common sense in there as well.
