From the BBC report…. “ We have been unable to find any direct criticism of Starmer personally in any of the reports on the scandal, nor can we identify any suggestions that he himself made any decisions not to prosecute.” Starmer made changes at the CPS which made it wearier to prosecute the offenders. Fortunately, Nazir Afzal overturned the CPS lawyers in the North of England and prosecutions went ahead. Victims were let down, it’s a damning indictment of our country, jus5 like thecPostvOffice scandal, the infected blood scandal and others. Is there anything we cant get wrong? |

The content is a bit of a concern, but the author is a journalist for the Daily Express which is probably the most biased of UK’s mainstream newspapers and will be soaked in doom and gloom. I generally read 2/3 newspapers a day, The Telegraph, The Independent are 2 and the third one will vary, they have different political biases but they provide some quality journalism albeit from different political perspectives. The author is a financial journalist from the Daily Express. As far as I can tell this particular Harvey Jones is not a Sir and he is not a businessman, I think you’re mixing the journalist Harvey Jones with Sir John Harvey-Jones the renowned Goliath of British business who was Chair of ICI in the 1980’s and who went on to front a TV programme on the BBC amongst many other things. Sir John Harvey-Jones died around 15 years ago. |
| Forum Reply | There is no economic logic in keeping Darling. at 22:57 6 Jan 2025
Depending what site you look at it’s been £15k and £20k per week. The way I see it is he should have been offered a deal a long time ago, not offering a deal can make someone feel undervalued and eventually it’ll become personal. I’m not saying that’s happened here, but if he thinks I’m not good enough to get my contract and then someone from the club does eventually knock his door then he just might say @@@@@@ off! Darling holds all the cards and the club have very limited room to manoeuvre, he’s taking a risk that he won’t pick up an injury, but the other side of the coin is a huge signing on bonus in the summer. If they want to keep him, the club will need to stump up a massive signing on fee, a big increase in salary and a contract with a buy out clause where he can pick up another nice little earner from being sold in the future. |

I’m not saying everything is rosy in the garden, because it clearly isn’t, but the original article is from a Daily Express journalist, so it’s hardly likely to be a glowing endorsement. I’m happy to give Labour some time to try and improve from where we were, if they don't Starmer will be gone and they’ll be out. |

Apparently the FB footage is from 5 years ago, so we’re talking around 19/20 when we had a Conservative government and I’m surprised we didn’t see them make more of this and investigate. I know nothing about this police officer, but if what she’s saying is correct it’s politically explosive. Has she or anyone produced a copy of the documentation because In the 5 years you’d think someone somewhere would have a copy and produce it. I’d love to see it for my own eyes. As has been said it is too late. What I will say after driving the full length of the road a month or so ago was that it’s a huge piece of engineering, tbh I was shocked at the number of new bridges, slip roads, roundabouts etc, it’s a huge job.the fact they were upgrading the road instead of building a completely new one didn’t help the time lines as did some of nature of some of the engineering works near Abergavenny. I’m not sure if the 23 years is an over run of epic proportions or an overrun in conjunction with a phased approach, but whatever it is we should have had it before now challenges or not. |

You sound like one of those Victorian’s who introduced the Welsh not to deter children from speaking Welsh in school. We’re in Wales and if people want to then so be it. Plenty of countries around the world have more than 1 language and everything works smoothly. |

Most do but prefer to use Welsh, some have very very poor English (older people and farmer types down west) and have great difficulty using English. I’m fluent in both languages so have the best of both worlds. There are times when speaking Welsh definitely brings an advantage to the table and others when it’s of no issue whatsoever. As you can tell I’m pro the Welsh language, but I’m not a zealot. [Post edited 4 Jan 20:32]

It makes a lot of difference to the small number of people who only speak Welsh and the people who’s first language is Welsh. Most of the people I know would love to be able to speak Welsh, the ability to do so can make a huge difference where I live. My father in law has his own business, he uses a lot of the Welsh language when dealing with his customers and it makes a huge difference. |

Lots of good points being made. The truth of the matter is what happened to these girls and women was abhorrent, many were vulnerable and were left down by the system. Some of the offenders have been prosecuted and had long custodial sentences, others sadly have got away with it. My view is that where possible, the offenders of these heinous acts should be deported, their presence here isn’t conducive to the public good. In terms of the call for a public enquiry, we’ve had a number of enquiries already and I’m not sure one is needed. What really annoys me is the double standards we’re seeing from politicians particularly Kemi Badenoch and the Conservatives. In 2022, the then Minister for Safeguarding Amanda Solloway (Conservative) rejected a request from a Oldham councillor for a public enquiry in to the issue stating "It is for the local authorities in individual towns and cities which are responsible for delivering local services, to commission local inquiries.” If the Conservatives didn’t feel one was necessary 2 years ago, what’s changed? I’d have a bit more sympathy if Badenoch came out and said her party got it wrong 2 years ago etc etc and people were sacked, but she hasn’t and all we’re seeing is political football. Children were raped and they are treating it like a game. The 19th and final report covering Prof Alexis Jay’s 8 year investigation and overarching inquiry into child abuse was published in 2022, but its findings were ignored by the then Conservative government. When the report was published in 2022, the then Home Secretary Suella Braverman said "I am delighted that we have accepted the need to act on all but one of the Inquiry’s recommendations, and so demonstrate how seriously the Government takes the Inquiry’s findings. Each of those recommendations covers an extensive programme of work which will deliver real change for the future. I hope you will take the time to read our response to each in detail. But here I want to highlight three key measures which underscore the weight of our commitment to victims and survivors". Guess how many of the report’s recommendations the then Government went on to implement ……….0. Yes thats right a big fat zero. Lots of hot air, but no action, the hypocrisy from politicians is outrageous!! They play games while the vulnerable remain at risk. We've already had a national abuse inquiry - 7/8 years, 20 recommendations and none implemented. The current government are now allegedly working on introducing the recommendations that were made over 2 years ago, we should review progress in 6 months. Edit- apologies for war and peace, but I feel it’s really important people know the score and not what someone on twitter’s agenda wants us to know. Been away for a while, happy new year to all. There can and will be circumstances where certain posts are advertised for Welsh language speakers only, it will be rare but it will take place. Examples could include recruiting a Welsh speaker to deal with incoming phone calls in Welsh thereby ensuring the public body satisfies the legislative requirement to provide a service through the medium of Welsh. |

There’s good and bad in all walks life. This guy in Germany is clearly a wrong un, but there are plenty of more muslims who are good, upright decent citizens. One of my neighbour is a paediatrician who devotes his time to making sick kids better while another is a surgeon who spends his time saving local people’s lives. [Post edited 20 Dec 2024 22:44]

Hopefully his resignation will see Cardiff Rugby /Cardiff RFC have less influence in the WRU - but I’m not going to hold my breath as Geraint John has stepped in on an interim basis. |

| Forum Reply | Mandelson to be next Ambassador to USA. at 09:42 20 Dec 2024
We’ve had non diplomat ambassadors before, some appointed by the Conservatives and some appointed by Labour. Mandelson is a clever guy and he may be able to relate and get on with Trump, but he’s not a guy if have gone for. If he can deliver a decent trade deal, it may be an inspired move. Not holding my breath though. |

Which is one of the reasons NHS performance in Wales is worse than some other areas. People who have poorer health cost more to look after and take up more resources. Wales has an older population than most regions of the UK and combine it with the issues in this report and the pieces of the jig saw start to come together. |

My grandfather was born in Swansea in 1904, he grew up in a Welsh speaking house hold and only learned to speak English after he moved to Neath to work in a steel works. Going back 120 years, there was definitely a thriving Welsh language in Swansea, |
