| News Comment | Southampton At Brentford The Damning Verdict at 13:42:09
In a nutshell, why sign 14 players and not play most of them. A back four with Lesley and Downrs just in front has to be a more effective defence than we have see. Dibling and Archer must play and Rodriguez probably as well. Maybe Cornet and Fraser the other two. |
| News Comment | Southampton Planning Triple Swoop On West Ham On Deadline Day at 09:09:43
Do you ever question these “reports” Nick? Just how many players do you think we can fit in to a squad let alone a team? If Ings was ever someone we fancied we wouldn’t have bought Archer. I think any money we may have been holding back for last minute purchases went when we forced to buy Ramsdale not borrow him, so no we can’t buy JWP as well. There isn’t room for him in our midfield if Dibling is ever going to get a game and that sort of purchase, even if we could find the money, would end any pretence that we had a pathway to the first team for young players. The only one of these three I can see happening is Cornet on loan. Edozi can’t say he hasn’t been given a chance… |
| News Comment | Southampton V Nottingham Forest The Verdict. at 09:32:38
Fernandes looked good. Dibling always looks a threat. I don’t like the role your mate Stephens plays, but he does play it well. I’m a four at the back and proper midfield players in front of them merchant. I would sooner see Downes and the unpronounceable Chelsea kid play in front of a back four, and four attacking players in front of them. Fernandes and Dibling in attacking midfield and any two of our now four strikers up top? |
| News Comment | Southampton Sign Portuguese Midfielder at 07:44:04
It’s a big assumption to make that Saints can’t multi-task and are not negotiating for a keeper while finalising this deal. I don’t imagine we have the money to buy one though, so it will be a loan or a freebie. Either way Gavin, the big money buy, gets back in when fit. Meanwhile should Lumley be given a shot if we haven’t done a deal for a new keeper by Saturday? |
| News Comment | Southampton Looking To Get Players In And Out Before Season Starts at 08:53:19
You would have thought we have enough surplus players who would do a job for say Celtic and Sunderland to grease the wheels of deals for O’Reilly and Clarke and get our squad down in terms of size and wages. Or young players who could be loaned out to help these clubs and us in terms of getting them experience.I doubt we could tempt Liverpool for anything other than cash! |
| News Comment | Where Is Kyle Walker-Peters ? at 16:37:04
The most logical reason is that we don’t want another Che situation, losing a good player for no fee. So, find another club who will pay us a fee or sign another contract with us. And you won’t be playing for us until one of those two things has happened. There is an obvious way out of this impasse — sign a contract with a release clause acceptable to Saints and Kyle. Then get on with life until someone comes in for him. |

I always think it’s what you don’t see in pre-season is what’s important. So, no sight of KWP means leave or sign another contract so we are not in Che type position with him next Summer. No Stephens until last night, was he negotiating with someone? Ross Stewart? What’s the story there? What’s with Larios? He surely isn’t going to play for us this season — maybe rehabilitate in a lower league? Dibling and Amo-Amayaw the only kids still in contention, others on the way to loans. I was imagining a front three of Brereton, Stewart and Armstrong but if no Stewart we are certainly still a number 9 short. Do we sign Jack Clarke and play Armstrong or Brereton in the middle? I don’t see Edozie, Mara or Kamaldeen being starters, or probably the Crystal Palace kid in the short term. |
| News Comment | Arsenal Goalkeeper Linked With Southampton at 10:05:06
Doesn’t work as a transfer. Saints and manager believe in Gavin and we wouldn’t want and couldn’t afford both keepers when he is fit again. Ramsdale wouldn’t want to find himself on the bench again playing second choice. Works for all parties as a loan for a season though. |
| News Comment | The Calm Before The Storm The Transfer Scrum Begins On Monday at 17:22:03
You’re doing it to annoy. THB signed his contract last summer with a clause that kicked in if we were promoted. It is not a new contract or Man City and the player could seek a better deal. Adam Lallana is contracted to Brighton until the end of June. His Southampton contract now signed it would appear is post-dated to July 1st. Not many players’ contracts include annual bonuses any more; performance bonuses are more normal. There is nothing to stop two clubs and a player agreeing a contract in June which clicks in in July if that’s what suits the parties. Or indeed signing a contract now which clicks in next March, as we have done withe Japanese kid we have signed. Or you signing a contract to complete on a house in a month’s time. The more usual reason that clubs delay signing players early in the summer is that they then become liable for the player’s wages. Buying clubs prefer selling clubs to pay those for as long as possible. Finally, there is no apostrophe in bonuses. |
| News Comment | Southampton Confirm Romain Perraud Departure at 08:53:29
Thank you. After two summers of badgering you have finally taken on board how so many transfers take place before July 1st. Any chance you can work on your apostrophes now (or apostrophie’s as you would have it)? |
| News Comment | Southampton Back For Third Attempt To Sign Defender at 09:16:19
You have forgotten the three centre halves returning from loan spells. They all seem much of a muchness except of course for TBH. Commentators’ nightmare if Harwood Bellis plays alongside Dujetta Carr! |
| News Comment | Southampton Interested In Bournemouth Defender at 09:48:39
Don’t you find it amazing that so many deals are being announced as being completed when we are still in June, not yet July 1st, and outside the transfer window? Are you expecting clubs such as West Ham and Newcastle who announced signings yesterday to be docked points for breaching Premier League rules? Or do you now take on board the existence of post-dated contracts? |
