England v Switzerland Quarter Final match thread
at 04:25 7 Jul 2024

I would say with the exception of Spain, all of the teams people gushed about are now out. Germany, Austria, Turkey, Portugal etc.

You now have England, France, Netherlands and Spain. England and France have ground their way through without setting the world on fire but don't be surprised if they play the final.

England have not played well but do seem to be gradually improving and growing into the tournament. The Swiss are a very decent side so getting past them was no mean feat.

Mentality seems to be good also. The last minute goal v Slovakia and then the winner in early extra time reminded me of Man Utd winning the champions league in 1990 after being second best in the game itself and all but beaten. Again this time getting a late goal after going behind and the apparent confidence in the shootout are good signs. This is the sort of stuff teams that win tournaments do.

Reform is just the old BNP with more money and more subtle branding. Carefully chosen neutral colour for the logo etc. Beneath the surface the same old BNP.

Farage is no fool and knew he had to tone down his rhetoric a bit. The real person will emerge again in time.

Huge media coverage despite similar seat numbers to the greens and less than Sinn Fein who don't even sit on theirs.

Starmer is boring but boring is probably what the UK needs right now. Johnson had charisma, but what good did it do? He was utterly useless at the job in every way. Not only incompetent but corrupt too. Most good con men have plenty of charisma.

Ah, I've probably just given away the fact I didn't stay up all night to watch it and instead saw brief highlights in the morning 😄

If he stays, plays well and gets the kind of move he wants as a result, then I guess it's a win win. The lack of queue for his signature may put the ego back in its box for a while.

Surely any cabinet that doesn't contain the likes of Johnson, Dorries, Truss, Patel, Braverman, Hancock etc, etc can only be a positive.

As someone else said on another platform earlier, wouldn't it be nice for politics to become boring again to the point where we don't really notice it that much?

Media w@nkfest over a party with less seats than the Shinners possibly a little overdone was I guess my point.

The German penalty shout.

We are constantly seeing pens given by VAR with balls deflected from a metre away onto an arm where the defender can do nothing. I hate it but they are given every week.

This time much further away and his arm sticking out. Nothing.

Make it make sense!

Sinn Fein has more seats than Reform and they only stand in northern Ireland and don't even turn up to parliament . Just saying.

Australia had a Tory government at the time, also supported it. As did the Tory opposition in the UK. Not sure why this is used as a Labour thing. Saddam could have let the weapons inspectors in and avoided it all. He'd probably be campaigning for Reform by now 😄

The only death I've genuinely celebrated was Thatcher. Rupert Murdoch will be the next and the sooner the better.

Agree some of the Tory speeches were really good, but where has this been the last few years. They were all complicit in what went on and supported the likes of Johnson until it became impossible to do so.

Exit polls had Reform at 13 and it seems a lot of media semen was wasted on that prediction.

Who are the fools voting for more than one candidate each time the results are read? Are they allowed to drive cars and operate machinery?

This. She's had endless injury issues over the past couple of years but seems to be over those for now. A great talent.

As for anyone trying to rubbish winning the US Open at 18 from the qualifying rounds without losing a set, words fail me!

BBC went to Belfast a bit earlier and they talked about it being a potentially bad night for the DUP who've usually held the most seats there in the past.

Probably wouldn't be the case if Reform, like the SNP, only contested seats in Scotland.

I would encourage everyone to help in the utter destruction of the Conservative party today. It is no more than they deserve after the last few years and hopefully its a learning experience for them.

As for the S*n turncoats now supporting Labour, that should reassure anyone worried that a bunch of mad "woke leftists" are about to take over. Wouldn't it be nice to see a day where newspapers and other media outlets aren't telling anyone who to vote for?

Popcorn ready, hopefully a few big names fall in Michael Portillo style. Look how much nicer he is doing TV shows about trains in colourful clothing than he was as a politician.

Huge achievement after it seemed his chance to do it had passed. Fantastic stuff.
