| News Comment | Forster Shuns Celtic To Fight For Saints Place at 09:12:05
I think if Forster shows Ralph that he has what it takes to start, he could initially benefit from playing in stadiums without fans. Forster was never a bad keeper, he was just a keeper who hit a bad patch and saw his confidence take a massive hit. When mistakes are made by 'keepers, the fans are very quick to react. We have seen both McCarthy & Gunn go through similar spells (in fact, how many top flight keepers haven't experienced this - Hart, Pickford, Butland etc.), it seems part of the process in being a goalkeeper. Hopefully his season at Celtic has brought that confidence back and he can again start to establish himself and show the form that rightfully earned him a place as one of the Goalkeepers in the England squad. |
| News Comment | Saints V Tottenham Hotspur The Verdict at 13:35:51
Fantastic performance all round. Plaudits for recent form of Stephens well deserved but would also say the other favourite of the 'boo boys', Cedric, must of won every header he contested yesterday. Was surprised that a lot of our fan pages felt the need to have him as one of our lowest scored players. Credit should be given where it is due and over this holiday period, do not think any player can be faulted for effort. As a team, we look so much better playing on the front foot. I was one of those who was calling for Ralph to go due to his stubbornness in playing 8 defensive players every week. A change was needed and its great to see Ralph going back to a style he knows best. We look such a better team when we press and look to go forward. Long may it continue. |
| News Comment | Saints At Chelsea The Verdict at 10:33:35
It's good to see Ralph return to similar style of football that we started the season with. We tend to perform better when playing a pressing game. When the doubts set in he played too deep with 5 defenders and 3 deep playing midfielders. I think having the legs of Armstrong in midfield helps bring players like JWP and Redmond more forward. Also benefiting Stephens who has brought the ball out from the back quite confidently in the last couple of games. Overall, nice to see Saints on the front foot rather than the back foot. Long may it continue. |
| News Comment | Selection Headache Up Front For Hasenhuttl at 10:28:56
If Long is fit then both will be dropped in favour of Ings & Long. If Long not fit, would like to see Adams have the chance to work alongside Ings. Think this would benefit Adams greatly. |
| News Comment | Saints At Manchester City The Verdict at 13:36:44
I'm surprised that anybody who watched the game on Saturday could criticise the performance from the team. Yes, it was not pretty, yes we lost, yes we did not have a lot of possession but sometimes you do need to factor in the level of opposition. There was obviously a game plan to frustrate Man City and try and take chances on the break and bar one or two small errors, it almost proved successful. If Southampton were to set up the same against Everton at home, then i believe manager could well be open to criticism but no one should be attacking the team for the performance I saw on Saturday. It was a true 'team' performance from front to back. |
| News Comment | Saints Scapegoats Show They Have Fight at 13:18:43
I believe most criticism has come from the midfield three being lacking in pace and creativity. Question - were the midfield three broken up on Saturday ? Do you think the inclusion of Armstrong in the midfield 'might' of made a difference ? You know there is a difference in constructive criticism and making a player a scapegoat. |
| News Comment | Little Steps Again On Saturday At Manchester City at 13:43:10
The problem with Tuesday, it was a cup game, a straight knockout match and we seemed to set up in order not to get battered. Yes, I do not expect Southampton to win this fixture but you have to go out with the mindset to compete/win. Ralph wanted to ring the changes and yet picked the same predictable midfield three that have offered very little so far this season. So what are we to expect on Saturday ? Another 8 defensive players sitting in own half waiting to be swamped ? The ironic thing on Tuesday was that once we ventured forward and put a bit of pace in the side with Adams & Redmond, we didn't look too bad. Maybe Ralph needs to go back to what we were promised at the start of the season and produce the high press game with a bit of pace (like we did against Liverpool & Man Utd). Unfortunately we are so far away from that at the moment. |
| News Comment | Saints At Manchester City The Preview at 14:13:28
Might be a silly thing to say but sometimes attack can be the best form of defense. At the moment we know our GK, defense and midfield are not up to the task. Against Leicester we lined up with 8 defensive players and the GK. 5 at the back works if the two WBs are going to support the attack - this is not happening so why bother ? The midfield 3 are slow, ponderous and uncreative so why continue with 3 of them. I would much rather see a bit more up front. Why can't Adams work with Ings (might benefit them both), Armstrong has some legs so put him instead of JWP (sorry but his FKs and Corners not enough to keep him in the team). PEH is your captain and has no leadership skills on the pitch and when defending never seems to be goal side. Would like to see a change in shape rather than the same negative shite at the back week in week out |
| News Comment | The Worst Defence In The Premier League ! at 12:54:33
We play with two holding midfielders and I would question whether we are getting enough out of them as well. Same goes for the Goalkeeper. Would also say another problem with this team is that we do not have any leaders on the pitch, no-one to direct play etc. |
| News Comment | Whats The Issue With Yan Valery ? at 13:25:11
Think the Bournemouth team selection was most baffling. Danso comes back from suspension and goes straight in the side as a Right Back (after having two games at Left Back despite the player brought in as a Centre Back). Cedric moves to the Left. Bertrand on bench and no Valery. We've also seen JWP moved to Right Wing Back and Djenpo play as a Left Wing Back (which almost cost us) in some games. So think SaintMark is correct when he asks whats the issue with our manager. Valery just seems to be part of the fallout |
| News Comment | Why Would Anyone Want To Miss An FA Cup Semi Final ! at 11:03:00
A great perspective. Personally I am no fan of semi finals at Wembley. That said, two of the best days i've had as a Saints fan were the 2nd leg at Anfield in the League Cup & at Villa Park v Watford. Days like these are the reason for being a fan, they live with you forever. Regardless of the opposition, current form etc. you have to believe. |
| News Comment | Saints V Brighton The Verdict at 13:05:08
We are so boring and predictable to watch. The build up from the back takes so long, that by the time we do reach the halfway line, the opposition have every player behind the ball in a solid formation ready to defend. we are seeing this every week yet nothing changes. Compare that to Brighton who were able to shift the ball from back to front quite quickly which in turn caused us defensive problems. Thought they were quite good to watch at times. Think the 'Southampton Way' has truly lost its way. |
| News Comment | Saints V Newcastle United The Verdict at 12:33:10
As tell101 alluded too, we play to much like England. The slow and ponderous build up play is awful to watch. Perfect example was in the second half when VVD played a 60 yd cross field ball to Tadic - a perfect opportunity to catch Newcastle on the back foot - instead, within 3 passes VVD had the ball again. At that point, any advantage we had was lost as Newcastle had time to re-group and get behind the ball. Nick did pick up on the point of the first goal, that was the first time I could remember an early ball being played into the box, this is the sort of thing we should be doing to teams, not leaving this to the last 15-20minutes like we did against Man Utd & Stoke. We see this time and time again and surely that has to be down to the managers style of play. Unless this changes, then rotating players isn't going to make a lot of difference. |
| News Comment | Le Tissier Says Tide Is Turning In Saints Favour ! at 16:37:05
Shouldn't be allowed to go anywhere until he puts in an actual transfer request. Sickens me that players & agents today want to have their cake and eat it. Was never a big fan of Rupert Lowe, but admired the way he handled a similar situation with Dean Richards to Spurs. Told them what we wanted to clear in the deal and if Richards wanted his ten percent, either Spurs paid him or they paid our fee plus ten percent. Same stance should be taken with VVD |
| News Comment | A Mixed Reaction On New Season Ticket Price Announcement at 21:18:13
SaintNick, how many calls did you get from people, who have not stepped into the stadium for years, looking for cup final tickets ? There were plenty of people looking to pay huge sums for those! If the club dropped the prices (which would be nice - I struggle to pay as much as the next man), I don't believe you would see a big jump in attendance. The club have made a 'gesture' yet still people find cause for complaint. I am grateful I will not be paying more ( obviously would like it cheaper) and fail to see this as an 'I'm alright jack' attitude. I just struggle to find why club is criticised for doing/trying this. |
| News Comment | A Mixed Reaction On New Season Ticket Price Announcement at 13:02:19
So in short, I will not pay anymore for my ticket next year ? Whats the problem ? With regards to new customers, try being a long standing customer of Sky, Virgin etc.. I'm more than happy to see new blood at St Marys and not too concerned about what deal the next man gets for one year. |
