Ashby injured or hooked?
at 22:20 21 Jan 2025

As I said before, I think he was hooked. But there is one mitigating factor. He was asked to come on in Smyth's position and keep things going. I don't really see any signs of being able go past players or pass and move from him so I'm a little bit bemused why Marti keeps on trying this.

I reckon he was OK and Marti hooked him. He might have been clipped but I think he would have wanted to stay on.

I don't have any issue with it.

Yep Paal was quite good. And Ronnie Edwards, apart from at the death when he let the ball bounce. Apart from that he was good.

Both liabilities, not good enough to be starters/regulars and not really of any use as impact subs. Get rid.

Well said mate. Field is excellent. Look at him in tight situations. His timing and execution of the tackle is excellent and he can get us out of very tight situations. He is an excellent player. Probably our best outfielder if you look at his marks out of ten over the course of this season and the last three. I'm not having this criticism of the fact that he's not Akos Buzaky further forward ....

Superb player. Also, thought he was doing well earlier in the season when he was playing deeper and being criticised for not affecting things further forward. Ditto Smyth. Loved him earlier in the season also even when he wasn't getting to the by-line so much.

I thought there was an issue with some of these players being identified and signed by Nourry.

Yep Varane was better than Colback. But he should be back, and hopefully good for 90 minutes on Tuesday. Marti is doing pretty well at playing the cards that he has been dealt. He continues to pull rabbits our of hats.

Work in progress.

Yep, I still think we need to rein in the expectations. We have a threadbare first team squad which has required us to call on kids and has good players regularly on the treatment table. It is only going to take 2 or so more injuries and we are going to have to use the likes of Madsen, Ashby and Andersen etc who are not up to the rigours of Championship football.

I thought we played well. The formatting (shape and organisation) and application and decision making were by and large good. We dealt with their pace very well.

One or two players are not 100% on top of their game but I guess it is never possible for everyone to be at 100% for 90 minutes in a game. The usual suspects were very good - Field, Dunne, Smyth and Kolli, when he came on. No one had a shocker or let the team down.

As stated in the other message, we are progressing well. We have definitely arrested the ineffectiveness of the first third of the season.

Difficult to pin down as quite a few players move around a bit, e.g. Morgan last home game was moreorless playing right mid first half.

If I had to say what Marti does I would say:

- Back 4
- cdm in front of the centre backs (varane),
- no. 8 up an down in front of the defence and behind the attack (Field)
- no. 10 wandering (morgan)
- rw, lw and cf (smyth, chair and frey)

Kolli signs new deal!

Brilliant news. This kid has got everything it takes and he can be the answer up front. I think Alfie can be one of our striking options too.

Priority for me now is a LB and no. 10. Morgan is good but not sure he can go past players in the way that is needed from a no. 10.

Definitely sign him. Admittedly doesn't go past the full back on every occasion but he more often than not wins a free kick in a good position if he doesn't go past them. Plus he deserves to be signed alone for his amazing attitude. Gets regularly assaulted by 6ft centre backs but gets up every time and goes head to head with them. Amazing player. Sign him up.

I disagree. He has the raw tools. Just needs to polish them. I can see him making it.

Really sad news. Liked him on Whose Line is It Anyway ? with others like Paul Merton and Greg Proops making a name for themselves.

Trent Mahorn and Shiloh Remy playing for Dagenham & Redbrige v The Wall in the Cup tonight (on TV). Grego-Cox on the bench for the Daggers.

Hunt around for long enough in non-League circles and you will always uncover an ex-R or two.

A bit of perspective please!

I totally and utterly agree. Additionally Marti should not have kept Ashby and Masden on the pitch after half-time. He should have asserted his authority at that stage. Their efforts were unacceptable. Dunne, Morgan, Smyth all had 45 minutes in them.

Totally reasonable as always. Fair reflections on the team, and keeps to himself what needs to be kept to himself. SE will not agree,

Ashby.
at 19:32 11 Jan 2025

Ashby's cover today would have been Ronnie Edwards who was playing his first full game for us. So it would be a big ask for Edwards to do Ashby's job for him as well as his own. I thought the match just showed that Ashby and several others aren't good enough. I said it 3 weeks ago after Preston. There is an unacceptable gulf in class in the squad. Field, Varane, Cook, Smyth, Kolli etc etc etc all good enough. Ashby, Celar, Madsen, Andersen, Santos, not good enough and need to go.

He visibly slows up when he gets near a challenge. There is simply no way that you can do that as a professional. He'd struggle enough on a Sunday morning with that mentality. He needs to find another, non-contact sport.
