It's like we don't know how to progress the ball down the pitch as s unit. When Santos and Varane 'combine' on the right they are both in a race to be the first one to turn back and play it back. |

I've always found his Minimalist work the most affecting. |

I mean what is our 'strongest team' anyway? I would say we don't have a definitive one yet. Got a lot of players developing this year who may well end up in our strongest side. And anyway this slightly mythical 'strongest side' was f**king terrible against a sh*t Sheffield Wednesday. I'd have been bothered if we didn't make any changes! We did and we improved. Sure, we could have been a bit more at them first half although I end up thinking that about most of our games. I guess people's emotional response is more from accumulation over the years. |

I think people are winding themselves up a bit here. That was not a really weakened team full of kids and Hamalainens like we may have played in the past. We've just paid millions for Celar, Madsen and Varane, we've all acknowledged they need minutes to develop and get used to English football and now we're losing our sh*t because the manager had the temerity to start them in a match in a 3 game week! Bit OTT. Many have already talked about Walsh pushing Nardi and being the keeper of the future but now we must never play him in any game and he should just train and sit on the bench for a year! If you think Frey can play the best part of 90 minutes 3 times a week you haven't been paying attention. He's had one great game and now Celar must never start? Dembele was the only obvious quality miss and he still got a half, let's not Willock him to death just yet. He'll be playing more than enough minutes and taking more than enough kickings this season. It's like some have already forgotten we were absolute dog turd against Wednesday, we made some changes and put in a far superior showing today against some excellent players. I can't see how Colback and Frey would have made much of a difference. I'll give you Jimmy Dunne, always Jimmy Dunne. [Post edited 18 Sep 1:09]

Thank f**k for that, made it to HT. We and Marti have been thoroughly outdone, time for a change or 2 or at least some tactical shift. I know he's a good wherever he plays but you have to have Dembele in the 10. Can get on the ball much more often and link up around the pitch. He's the one player who can take a ball with a defender on his back and comfortably keep it (and often beat the man too with a move or a neat pass). I used to feel the same way about Willock last year, always stuck out on the right, away from Chair, and often ineffective. Dembele occasionally aside, no one has looked good but Santos is NOT a defender and that massive CB isn't remotely interested in getting out muscled by Frey. Looking forward to seeing what Marti does. |

Great article, thanks. On Sam Field, I really thought I saw an observable change in his attitude/approach with the ball against Luton, especially in those first 15 minutes when were playing the 'bravest' football I'd seen this season. It looked to me like he was determined to look up and forward more often and try a progressive pass, than before. There was less of his standard automated easy ball back to the defenders or sideways. Also there was less pointing out the obvious safe ball to a team mate and a bit more movement to make himself available instead. There was a small defining moment in the second half when he laid a ball to Dunne who then ignored a progressive pass that was available and played it backwards, killing the monentum, and Field had a go at him! Not something we'd have seen before when normally he'd be pointing out the safe pass to Dunne. Very small sample size of one game but I reckon there's a chance that Marti has now insisted upon a braver more positive and progressive approach. It doesn't have to be 30 yard defense splitters, not Sam's forte, but get that ball 8,9,10 yards forward into the feet of Dembele, Saito, Frey etc even if they have a defender near them. It looked like all the team had got the message but Field's change stood out to me because of what we've seen prior. Next couple games will be interesting to see if it continues or maybe I was just tired after a long week and getting a little delusional! |
