The difference is that Nelsen was playing at Spurs last season and came in strictly as cover before being forced to start every game.
Ben-Haim hadn't played a match in 10 months (at relegated Pompey), and last played in the PL 2 years ago in a 5-0 defeat.

He hasn't played for a while now, but at least he's spent six weeks training with the squad and has had an opportunity to get to know them.
That will help him get up to speed and they should give him some minutes against West Brom to accelerate that process even further. We're so short of players in defensive areas that it's important to get one or two more bodies in there. The deal is a sensible one too, so no complaints as it works for both parties.
He'll need to impress in order to win another contract in the summer, whether that's with us or somebody else, so there's a lot at stake for him here. |  | | |

That's not exactly true is it though? His loan expired and there was a dispute between Pompey and West Ham over who should pay him and whether there was a clause which dictated West Ham should complete a permanent purchase?

Short term deal so little risk financially. My main concern is that we like signing players who have barely played in years and it shows: SWP, Onuhua and now Ben Haim. Surely we need players who are up to speed and don;t need a long period of adjustment.
