Weather's getting me down now. We were promised vineyards, sunflowers, siestas, the lot. I even had to turn the heating on last night - in July! Im with Clive on this one. To say there is climate change is fair enough but to say it's caused by human behaviour is another, it's possible to say we may accelerate it but that's it. The climate of this planet has changed continually since its start, so why's this any different. |
The analysis of Michael Mann and the people who conducted similar studies in his wake (which happened to corroborate his findings) allowed for natural variations. They plotted a line to show where natural cycles should have taken things and then compared it to where we have actually ended up.

Do not be seduced by the very tempting idea that "doing nothing" is one of the options. It is not an option. The construction of the Thames barrier is one example. The outcry about cuts to spending on other river defences, last week I think it was, is another, as is the recent plan to invest in a desalination plant. We are already spending on measures to counteract the changes.
If we don't spend to counteract GW/CC, we will end up paying in other ways anyway. Importing gas is getting more expensive and undermines energy security. Crop yields are falling. There is still plenty of oil out there but it's harder to get to and yields are lower; with conventional oil fields, one barrel of oil invested in the drilling process will get you 20 barrels out but for the (bountiful) tar sands fields, the ratio is 1 in 5 out. The cheap, high grade oil has been used up already.
The lack of commitment to renewables is also holding back jobs and investment. Companies (like Siemens) are poised to build new factories in the UK but are wavering as the government fights with itself over alternative energy.

Who pays for flood defences? We do. I don't have figures to hand for the UK but the cost of protecting the US coastline has been estimated at $155bn.
Here, it has already been determined that some areas are at great risk of sea level rise (and the compounding effect of more powerful storms), for example the South Wales coast (with all its heavy industry).

That is a model for the sun's effect. It is not a model for the lack of human effect. These two things are not inclusive.

You are correct about the floating ice melting, spot on, but the issue is ice (glaciers) sliding off landmasses, e.g. the W Antarctic ice shelf or Greenland.
Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news but we need to be clear on this or, well, let's not dwell on the consequences too much. Suffice it to say they are not ideal!
