Altrincham FA Trophy Match Thread 20:48 - Feb 28 with 3845 viewsEllDale

Does anyone know if, should the teams be level after 90 minutes, the tie goes straight to penalties or would the teams play 30 minutes extra time?
Just trying to assess travel options.

Straight to penalties, like at Stockton.

Think it's straight to pens, same as it was against Stockton.

I can't get to many of the games myself so relay on DAZN on catch up to watch the games. Does anybody know if this game will be available anywhere? I know the club can't stream it live because of the black out laws but I know some of the previous games in this competition have been available.

DAZN don't have the FA rights to show this competition. Not sure where you'll find - if at all

TNT have the tv rights but just show the final. No other game is on telly or available to watch other than at the ground.

Will be interesting to see if the atmosphere is better or worse today as the young lads from the Sandy have tickets for the Pearl Street end as a one-off and the club have apparently granted permission for the drummer to take it in there with him.
From what I can gather their ambition is to make the move permanent next season, ideally in the block of seats nearest to Willbutts Lane.
What the club decide to do with visiting supporters if this happens is another matter.

Well done Dale

Latics got turned over by Barnet at Boundary Park so perhaps some kind of context, but the playoffs seem more of a long shot now

We'd need to win the FA Trophy to compensate if we miss out in the league

Realistically competing for the 5/6th place.

Today's performance and result should instil some confidence that we can reach the FA final and qualify for the play offs.

A great afternoon’s entertainment. Impressive win against a good side in a game where both sides played their part.

We look so much better with a focal point up top that others can play off, Bird has some similarities to COG in how he moves and he occupies defenders in a similar way (no, that’s not saying he’s as good, simply an observation). Barlow was excellent and all our best play went through him. Both looked shattered when they went off and hopefully the timing of the subs was planned with their lack of game time recently taken into account.

Defended really well too, Waller with some super saves as well. Credit to all involved and to fans at both ends of the ground who backed the team well throughout.

It’s a results business and it’s an entertainment business. Two out of two today.

Why was he subbed?

He is lacking match practice. Keep him fresh for Tuesday. He did really well holding the ball up and linking play. He took his goal really well. First half was really good, after the early subs it wasn't great but we looked fairly comfortable.

I was there. A not particularly good Woking side equalised in injury time. The worst penalty shoot out I have ever seen followed. A City fan next to me said that they had had 3 penalties all season and missed all of them, which was a bad omen. 7 penalties missed in a row with 4 awful ones from City. Woking keeper scored their fifth to win it.

Good to hear about a decent performance from the Dale. Hopefully we can take this toward in to the league.

Semi final draw on Monday. Hope we can avoid a long trip south. Another league game to rearrange…not that I am complaining!

Spot on. A proper team performance today, Barlow was fantastic and Bird also reminded me of COG. It's the inconsistency of performances that cause the frustration and we beat a very decent Altrincham team today by playing with some tempo and not playing walking football in our own half.

Those of us who have criticised the Mitchell and Rodney partnership were totally vindicated this afternoon, Bird hustled defenders showed as a target and scored an excellent goal, Rodney took the hint and played off him looking like he actually might get a decent lay-off.
After the first substitutions it was back to the same old same old , we regressed 15 yards closer to our own box, and gave their defenders an easy time to the extent that one of them played more like a midfielder.
If the substutuions were designed to save legs for Tuesday, they also succeded in showing exactly why we need to be able to hold the ball up at the top...

Mitchell and Rodney don’t play as a partnership! Rightly or wrongly, we haven’t played a front two all season. Bird’s presence allows both Rodney and Barlow to play off him. That’s one of the reasons why the latter was man of the match. They also changed formation and had an extra midfielder after the subs in the second half.

But yes, the later part of the game illustrated the point about needing a forward who occupies defenders and brings others into the game better than Mitchell.

Now, playing Mitchell in a two with Bird could be interesting. But that would require a change in how we set up.

Listening to McNulty’s interview, looks like we have to accept Bird won’t be featuring for 90 minutes every week yet due to his match fitness. He also noted he was “feeling a little something” when he went off, so hopefully it’s not a real problem.

Similarities with COG and his impeccable first touch (Mitchell please watch and learn). Also his goal reminded me of classic Tony Ellis. Hold off the defender, turn him the wrong way and finish. Early days but you can see why Jim started him today - he's obviously shown it in training this week.
