Can Yates still be a star at Swansea. 13:15 - Nov 12 with 1745 viewsReslovenSwan1

Jerry Yates has scored 50 goals over three seasons and three this season more than any Swansea striker including Saturday's arcrobatic finish.

He is not a target man and like Bafatimi Gomis may not have been played optimally by Williams and Duff.

He is Swansea s most elite striker. This is what the Derby boss stated. ( Taken from FLW)

""Yates has shown over the last couple of weeks that he really is a talented player, and he's capable of scoring goals at this level. He just needs adequate support.

"I think when he played alongside Dajaune Brown at Coventry, it gave him the space to be able to express himself, and although Brown didn't really have a great game himself, what he did do was occupy the centre-half, so Yates could benefit from that. It definitely helped Yates in that respect."

Play him properly alongside Vipotnik and he will score plenty.

No he won't - not without a bloody good striking coach grabbing him by the ears. His goal was superb, his lob that the keeper only just saved even better, but no Championship team can afford a player who wanders around aimlessly in his own world, especially a striker. If we can get half the money we paid for him, take the money and run.

Tend to agree.
I saw him as one who lacked courage
We can do better
We will

Swansea have coaches. Whether the striking coaches are any good is another matter.

The number of good strikers who have been rejected by Swansea who magically improve is a source for concern for me. Another zilch on the weekend.

The trouble is that Yates' improvement is marginal (3 goals). Gomis had a much more impressive uptake of form after he left.

Interesting comparison. Gomis did spend a season being derided and blamed for his managers inability to use him properly.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Not in Luke Williams’ preferred system. Quite likely in a partnership, but I don’t think he’ll change the formation. There’s little between Yates and Cullen up front in their own and neither of them suit it.

Vipotnik would have to improve substantially before he’s a decent strike partner for anyone. His shooting looks pretty good and in fairness he’s not afraid to take a shot. Needs to put himself about more and read play better before hes a real asset though. He’s not close at the moment.

Vipotnik will improve when the play and support around him improves, it does appear as if once the ball is further up the pitch we are at times we are incapable of playing in a manner to carefully keep control of the ball and have we seem to have little, idea, quality or are restricted as to what is needed for players to open up spaces for other players.
It is a generalised statement as at times we do but not often enough.
The likes of Key and Grimes seem to able to create that space but are coming from deep or not coming from deep that often in Grimes case.
The likes of Eom and Ginnelly seem to be able to attack players, take them on which created openings for themselves and others. Although in Ginnelly's case he has had little time to show what he can do due to injury.
Always remember the comments with regards to Lowe on his initial stint here, was his first touch h was awful but because he was fast he got goals but forgetting the quality he had alongside him in Andre Ayew, once Lowe got moved to the opposite wing the goals for both became fewer. Fast forward to Lowe latest time here he had a level of experience to use his pace to make space and time for himself in Key's breakaway goal last season where both players used a level of control and support, working together to make space and realise the opportunity clinically with the goal.
We are not seeing those levels of combinations often enough further up the park, inexperienced players praised one minute derided the nexted, it is the coaches job to work out the combinations of players to get the best out of the play.
Going away to Burnley or any team, it is hard to get positive results trying to force things ends up with loose play and creates pressure on ourselves but further up the pitch players need to be given the freedom to pick different options as they see them present themselves mistakes will be made and correctly set up defensive should prevent opposition attacks while allowing good possession as has been seen.
At the moment as said earlier we lack the experience and support up front, it does seem as crosses into the box are of a poor quality and yet we have seen times against poor defences the right ones have been made the right choices and combinations beginning to form, for me for the team Key and Grimes would both be better off further forward could we rely on others to provide cover for them both in the defensive roles with both Franco and Christie I think so.

An outrageous thought, but will Key morph into the number 10 we are crying out for.

He has pace to go beyond the forward line, pace which would be used to catch slower players off guard as poor teams try playing out from the back, seems to have a good eye for goal and makes time on the ball but also gets it forward quickly when possible as he did playing out of position on the left last season. He has a tendency to get caught on the ball as Ntcham, Paterson and Celina do but playing further forward shouldn't be such an issue as he has got the pace to easily keep up with players trying to breakout from the back, square pegs in round holes maybe but he does seem effective when playing further forward, would take time for him to adjust but what other options have we got at the moment.

and does spend time on the ball going forward

I agree. In matches he seems to be more infield recently and I wonder if this is Williams medium to long term plan for him. He could be worth a fortune if it comes off.

I half buy into this.

We don’t have players who can beat defenders and commit others creating space, like Ntcham. Eom will bring that when he comes back, but one player doing it from the wing still won’t be enough.

I’m sure Vipotnik will improve when we create more or better chances, any striker would.

But he’s got to help himself and he doesn’t do that. Bianchini looked more dangerous with the same service (arguably weaker due to other substitutions) against Oxford and Watford. Not so much against Burnley because we went very defensive towards the end, but he still looked a better outlet and was at least physically competitive, even just relieving pressure.

Vipotnik just doesn’t seem to anticipate what’s going to happen next and consequently arrives a second too late far too often. He’s also pretty timid when challenging, particularly on the air.

So yes, I agree he will improve with better service, but that’s not the only reason he’s struggled so far.

Why are some of our players so utterly one footed . It’s not an advantage to be so.

Our defence no longer give away sloppy goals and are a lot tighter, the team are better coached. As for the forwards are they taking longer or possibly they are just not up to it. The forwards we have loaned out and are working under other coaches have not improved going by their goal scoring record.

One or two seem to be under the impression you can just sign poor players and coach them to championship standard.

Cheaper that way.

Swansea need excellent coaches that improve players. Margetson is clearly one. Sheehan perhaps has improved the defence with Williams.

The have great players Swansea do not have to pay big wages but buy big potential and develop it while under long term contracts. I am hoping Abdullai will kick on.

Piroe

McBurnie

Anyone who can fashion a chance for themselves and doesn’t need it absolutely on a plate really.

Service definitely needs to improve but unless we’re going to consistently create the type of chances Vipotnik and Peart-Harris scored from recently, the strikers have to up their games too.

I don't think it's outrageous, Key looks a decent attacking player and he has pace.

I also agree with Res about Yates, up front as a pair with Vip he may be ok but we'll never find out. Selling him is the best option.

There seems to be a lot of teams only interested in playing one striker. The better teams have the good wide players to support and usually a decent 10 as well, we don't have the quality or the depth yet.

Lets see what Coleman can do.
