Smoking outside pubs 21:56 - Aug 29 with 9037 viewscolinallcars

I'm an ex pipe and cigar smoker but jacked it in when Tony Blair banned smoking in pubs.
Now talk of banning it in pub gardens.
I know it's a health risk but so are many things. Smoking outside won't have a deleterious effect on other peoples' health and the pub trade has problems aplenty - any thoughts ?

The key thing there is the element of choice. The places I take my family and the places I drink with my mates are polar opposites but that's by choice. If you want to drink somewhere where chang is being hoovered in the toilets, shoplifters are selling meat by the bag and a plastered painter called Del keeps cornering you to tell you why his wife left and his kids hate him, that's your choice.

On the original topic, I stopped smoking nearly 18months ago after 25yrs. I'd average around 10-15 fags a day and double that drinking, especially in a sunny day, in a pub garden, ideally one with a big screen showing live sport.

During one of the May bank holidays last year, the weather was perfect so went out with mates on an all-dayer. As the pub I was in does table service in the garden, I only moved from the garden table to pìss and ended up chain-smoking nearly 60 cigarettes. That's fùcking rank on it's own, but my overriding sense at the time was "fùck me I've dropped £50 on fags in a day" (I smoked B&H Gold).

The long-winded point I'm trying to make is the ability (or not) to smoke in the garden was irrelevant to me - I'd have smoked the same amount had I had to walk the 6ft out the gate to smoke on the road. My stop-trigger - and it'll be different for everyone - was I might as well have set fire to that £50.

If this government raised the price of tobacco to make smoking prohibitively expensive (as the Aussies have), or raised the minimum age to effectively outlaw smoking (as the Kiwis are doing), then fair enough. Banning smoking in pub gardens is nothing more than an attack on the hospitality industry that will achieve next to nothing other than accelerating the closure of thousands more pubs and their inevitable conversion into flats.

Good luck to anyone trying to stop. Believe in yourself and you'll get there.

Funny you mention the Australian model on smoking. I’m pretty sure this proposal about public spaces is a direct copy of theirs. Not sure about the pricing though.

I quit smoking (small cheroot style cigars) about 25 years ago. I'd run out and was popping down the store when I noticed the steady rain. Fvck getting soaked for a smoke I thought, and that as they say, was that.

Would be lovely to not have to walk through clouds of second hand smoke and vape in the Ellerslie concourse.

And, to add insult to injury, the other proposal is to introduce minimal alcohol pricing. Given what we pay for a pint in London surely that can't affect us ? Maybe supermarket prices ?

I'd have a semblance of respect for politicians if they dealt with real issues like scumbags stabbing young mothers to death, rather than renaming overground lines or stopping adults from having a cigarette outside.

It’s not just about stopping adults smoking outside though is it. It’s an attempt to save thousands of lives and millions of pounds. I don’t know if it will solve the issue but something needs to be done. The last government wanted the same thing but sadly were swayed by the lobbyists and money from big tobacco. Hopefully this lot will have more of a backbone.

You either make it illegal or you make it sensible (outdoors). Banning smoking outside pubs is not going to save thousands of lives. Sorting out knife crime and investing in mental health might though.

I believe the theory is that the more places smoking becomes unacceptable more people give up and fewer people take up the habit. That seems to have had success in other countries. I’m not sure what knife crime or mental health has to do with smoking but I would agree that much more needs to be done. It maybe my naivety but I assume that more than one issue can be addressed at the same time. Perhaps they are leading with smoking as it’s a low hanging fruit with minimal costs and potentially a positive outcome. Also better to piss people off in the early days of a new government hoping they’ll forget when the next election comes around.

IIRC outdoor smoking rules are promulgated at state level so it varies, but it's usually some variation of forbidden within 5-10m of a bar or restaurant. At Taronga Zoo (Sydney), there was a smoking area but it's situated at the bottom of the 25° incline hill the zoo is built on. I rolled down there for one, gasped my way back up and didn't return for a second. A level of subtlety there you don't often associate with the Aussies.

I think tax on fags is set nationally and you weren't getting much change from $35 for a pack last time I was there (~£20). My master plan of buying a carton of 200 in Dubai for $10 to get around this lasted as long as it took for them to open my hand luggage and tell me to either pay the duty on them ($350) or bin them (guarantee the customs lads smoked them).

Stopping duty free tobacco products would be a simple change and would either reduce smoking or mean more tax revenue.

Yeah its quite strict here and even the shops that sell them have to have the brand names hidden.

That said, vaping seems very popular and according to my son the bogs at school are full of kids doing that.

Very disturbing news there SydneyRs the long term effects of vaping are unknown but some Surgeons predict could be far worse than cigarettes down the road.
I live in IL over in the US and smoking is banned everywhere indoors and I cannot tell you what a pleasure /relief that is for a non smoker (I never touched cigs or cigars/ grass etc).
However I foolishly went with a few friends to a Casino over the state line in Indiana last Sunday and they allow smoking and it was a miserable experience .Lost my ass in slots of course but being elbow to elbow with chain smokers at every machine and walking around triggered my PTSD from my early days as a bartender in the 1980s
Not judging smokers just giving my opinion as a non smoker to each his /her own

I vape, probably too much but haven't had cigarette in 10 years this coming Wednesday.
I comfort/fool myself that i have now spoken to 3 different doctors about it and they all say the same thing..."you're still addicted to nicotine so the dangers is you'll go back on the fags: (not a remote chance for me) and that the danger of vaping compared to tobacco is fractional. I'll take those odds.Have done quite a lot research on it to try and make myself feel better about it and it seems Europe including UK are much more stringent on ingredients that are allowed to be used in the vape juice. My juice of favour is odourless (so doesn't bother others) and is only natural ingredients. Turning 60 on Weds and i'd like to cut it down to mostely evenings only in any case.

Smoking doesn't bother me in the slightest. I quit years ago but happy for anyone else to lug on those cancer sticks if it makes them feel better. Bit rich me sitting there after 5 pints and worry about health implications from passive smoking.

Occasional providers of half decent House music.

I implore anyone of you who Is smoking to stop, just f cking stop.

Having started smoking In 1964 at the age of 14 I managed to stop just over two and a half Years ago, I never smoked In the house but always In me shed or garage.

Here's the thing, I stupidly thought I was always In control of my smoking habit but I wasn't It was the other way round.
I stopped way to late and now I'm paying the price health wise, I had a heart attack about 12 Years ago and last year went through a spell of mini strokes, the surgeon actually telephoned me later In the day of my scan to tell me In no uncertain terms that after him seeing my scans I was In danger of having a massive stroke.

I've had brain scans suspected heart attacks, CT scans and an Carotid Artery operation which involves you laying on your side strictly motionless with a neck anesthetic but wide awake whilst a surgeon cuts your neck open and spends two hours cleaning out your Carotid Artery, It's a bastard of an operation with obvious risks of heart attack (shock) stroke (shock).
This September I'm having another operation to have a special stent put into the main blood artery that runs through your stomach, the artery at the moment has expanded and is in danger of bursting, again the surgeons have been brilliant and brought me In to explain the operation and the risks.
Now look I was doing a packet of Lambert and Butler a day (minimum) nigh on £12 per packet FFS that's In the region of £360 PCM Jesus wept how stupid can anyone be?

My lungs are now useless, notwithstanding that I'm also bloody asthmatic, I used to park In Findon Road and walk to the ground well I can't even do that anymore.

I've never seeked sympathy from anyone and I'm not starting now this Is all self inflicted and I'll deal with It.

If anyone Is In any doubt all this was brought on by my smoking, three separate surgeons at the superb John Radcliffe all told me the same thing.

If It's any help;

I cut my smoking down as quick as I could and made a note of my daily intake, I then on the odd occasion would only have half a fag now and again, then one Friday morning I went out to the garage for my first puff, sat down picked up half a fag went to light It, looked at It and threw it away and never smoked again. I never went In the garage for three days I couldn't face It.

After a few days Mrs Ted looked at me and asked If I'd actually stopped smoking, I said Yep I haven't had fag for four days, the smile on her face said It all.

A massive and huge thumbs up to Our fabulous NHS and those beautiful people at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, If there Is a God then God bless them all.

Now then enough waffle from me, I implore anyone of you who Is smoking to stop, just f cking stop.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Thanks Ted, that's an unanswerable piece on the dangers of smoking.
I took up smoking at a late age - about 25. Earlier, I think I was the only one of our crew that didn't smoke (‘ere, flash the ash, my mates would say).
I never smoked during the day, but got in the habit of a Villiger cigar or two in the pub and smoked a pipe for a while.
When they banned it in pubs I stopped completely. I seem to have escaped any harm.
Best of luck with your problems, Ted.
