Charlton Athletic v Swansea City : Matchday Thread 11:44 - Jul 20 with 15819 viewsNotLoyal

The friendly being treated as a friendly, but as a none friendly for getting ready for those away trips this season. So it is a friendly in a way but more of a travelling in a bus friendly before Rotherham which isn’t a friendly.

Did you know ? Charlton Athletic
Charlton is recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book as Cerletone. It is formed from Old English 'ceorl' and 'tūn' and means 'farmstead of the freemen or peasants'. It is a common English placename and the parish was also known as Charlton next Woolwich to distinguish it from Charlton by Dover. During the 19th century the riverside portion of the area became known as New Charlton.

They didn’t know ? Charlton Athletic
When Charlton was in Scotland it was famous for its restaurant ‘Bobby’s’ The kitchen used to serve real life sized marzipan and all the cutlery was made from cheese. When ‘Jackies’ opened up next door there was a fight between the two restaurants which ended up with Jackie moving to the Republic of Ireland and Bobby to Manchester where he is kept alive by being strapped to a horse each morning and gently analysed by a man called Alan.

Where to meet up ?

From this game there’s little if anyhting of note. In fact we looked poor.

That's a worry then, a potential season of same old mistakes, Grimes over every dead ball creating mayhem . Could be a struggle, will RM stay the course? Feeling very much glass half empty

Don’t feed off the doom and gloom merchants TJ, a ball hasn’t been kicked in anger yet and some are already saying we’ll fail this season.

Would appear that certain lessons haven't been learned, which is frustrating as we've certainly got the quality to be competitive at the right end of the table. A flat back four is imperative. A midfield minus Grimes also.

Having said that, pre-season friendlies are a notoriously unreliable guide to how things will go in the campaign to come and only a complete halfwit would take them as a true indicator, which would explain why so many of our own dullards have.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Congreve made the goal, left the Charlton player on his arse, and put it on a plate for Manning

Thanks I had no sound on my feed. Congrieve makes that an even more impressive goal. Tremendous play by the youngster.

I don’t think many would see a pre-season friendly as an accurate barometer reading of how the season is going to go per se. But, it seems that the style of play that caused us issues on far too many occasions last season is still being flogged and we’ve got no better at it.

I didn’t see the game so I’m going on reports and comments on here.

As for Grimes, I’m afraid that’s not going to happen but I definitely agree with you.

Having said that, are not precseason matches supposed to improve previous plays.
That would mean us not conceding dumbass goals

If we'd won all the games handsomely, you'd either be absent or grasping at some other reason as to why we were completely doomed.

He’s right though isn’t he.

I don’t think we can take much from pre season results. But pre season patterns of play, we certainly can.

It appears we are sticking with the ludicrous when it comes to our defensive plays and goal kick routines.

You have to ask yourself why we are going that. For genuine on field benefit, or just to be different. I can’t help feeling, yet again under Martin, it’s the latter.

Watching that Charlton game was like watching Groundhog Day from last season. Shambolic at the back, no midfield to speak of, walking football, no pace, and a diamond in Piroe
Add to that a new back 2 that looked ponderous, and nervous, Sorinola, who just looks crap, a slow Latibeaudiere, who’aint no wingback, and a delusional manager who persists in his ludicrous fecking about at the back policy, then this quote springs to mind…. “If you keep doing what you're doing, you'll keep getting what you've got!”

2nd half was far better, but we have to stop this playing about at the back, even the Charlton commentators mentioned how teams are clued up on us doing it.

Hopefully getting joe back will make us more urgent.

And Grimes really needs to pick the pace up, and Lati at right back is a really worry, he's been roasted in every friendly

You give it out, you take it back it`s all part of the game
