With the squad he has at his disposal now Martin needs to get us into the play offs. Anything less would be a failure in my opinion. He has the ball playing centre half we were missing last season, an experienced international in Joe Allen & 2 of the best strikers in the division. No excuses. I'd revise my opinion if we lost Piroe & he wasn't adequately replaced. A repeat of last season & he'll be gone in the World Cup break

Think your last paragraph is way off - he's got a job for life.

Not a chance, he's had his season of grace as was promised, improvements this year or he will be under serious pressure from above. As he should be. I'm still quietly confident if the squad stay in place we are in for an excellent season.

Only the owners know that & it doesn't matter how much (misplaced) faith they have in him if its going seriously t1ts up they'll have to act. I don't think a job for life exists for any manager

The new season is almost upon us and what is see is not excitement simply "support" for the coach/manager. Quite bizarre really. In these doggone friendlies, even lower league teams can score freely. The idea of pre season is to surely put in place a system and one that improves the team.Get into good habits early, like not losing a lead through "lack of concentration" etc. Excuses already being taken off the mantlepiece .
Nobody is going to convince me Fisher is one to keep goal for us.

It starts with him.
If anyone thinks pre-season is any indication of how the season will unfold, must be barking.

And there we have it, nothing of substance, still.
'Quietly' confident - because the sheeple have nothing to say, no rationale other than blind faith. No technical insight, nothing to address our glaring weaknesses. Head in the sands. Bonkers, in so many ways.
Speak up man, stop with all this 'quietly confident' nonsense without substance.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts.
I also want to be entertained & see the ball moving forward rather than the boring triangles of keeper to full back to centre half & back to the keeper.
I also expect to better the 7 nil aggregate score line we battered the shower of shite up the road with last season.

You were told this over and over again last season. You weren’t having any of it.
You were insistent it was the right way because “Liverpool and Man City do it”. Although you seemed completely oblivious to the fact we set up or play nothing remotely like them and Martin has never set up anything like them at any point in his career.
Having 75% of the ball, mostly in non threatening areas (non threatening for them anyway, it’s very threatening for us if, and when, we lose it), doesn’t make you a free flowing possession side. It makes you a negative side scared to advance in fear of the opposition having the ball.
I’m glad you are now waking up to the utter senseless nonsense he serves up. There is a reason he has never finished in the top half of any season he has attempted, yet immediately before his arrival and immediately after his departure - the club in question has always been on the up.
He is the great stopper of growth.
I believe the overall strategy is correct but certain details have to be attended to. It is my perception that Swansea do try to play like Man City by smothering teams in their own half. I am not a football coach or analyst. They are a very long way from Man city for sure.
In my opinion all Swansea players should have exemplary ball control and top quality passing accuracy. I do not accept you need international footballers to do this. It is perfectly reasonable to take time to develop and evolve. Some support the need for instant results.
The Manager has asked for time and now has to deliver. This is reasonable. There is no evidence that Martin can deliver a top 6 team at present. There was no evidence that Brendan could either. He was a sub prime manager when he arrived at Swansea.
The way Forest carved their way through the Swansea defence was certainly a concern. I supported the idea of Calderwood an experience eye to challenge the manger and disappointed this did not happen. Cooper audited Martin twice. Has he learned anything from these two audits? I hope so.
It is all up for grabs and mid table will not suffice for Mr Winter.
I can't believe we have not signed a right wing back/full back yet. If we are relying on Lati to do the job, might as well throw in the white towel. More pace is still needed with someone capable of delivering free kicks and corners.
Even when you know, you never know?

Mid table may have to suffice. There is no way our owners will pay Martin and his back room staff for being mid-table. Too costly.

Interesting discussion, thanks to everyone who has contributed so far.
I see not much has changed in terms of entrenched attitudes about Martin, on both sides of the divide. Have to admit I'm one of those who went for a 4-5, despite being hell-bent on parking my prejudices from last season and giving Martin a chance to prove himself when he has a full pre-season and two full transfer windows with plenty of backing from the board. My vote is based on what I saw in the recent friendly: nothing has changed from last season as far as I can see.
Desperately hoping I am wrong, or at least learn to see matches the same way as those who derive pleasure from Martin's brand of football.

In other words ,we are stuck with him. It is nothing to do with his competency it seems. We just cannot afford to pay him off.
I think Martin is different gravy. He will not stick around for a full pay off if he is persona non grata. Cooper did not stick around for his third year and even took last seasons pre season to enable the club to find a replacement.
Martin like Cooper would take his chances on gardening leave. The first indication of disenchantment is the insistence of an experienced right hand man. This suggestion has already been proposed and rejected probably by Martin. The team must tighten up this should be seen as 'non negotiable' by Winter.

He's had a free hit last season, had a chance to bring players in and prepare to have a real go at it this year. Should the World cup break come around and we are not performing of course he should go, but at least we will have given him a fair crack at it. I like the look of the squad we have, 1 or 2 more useful additions and i think we should be a playoffs and upward side.

I think alot of us are the same boat as you Bryan.
We just need a bit of pace though.

We absolutely have to move the ball quicker, it was painfully slow last year. We had the same issue (although not as extreme) at times under Potter. The Naughton/Fisher goal kick nonsense has to go too!
