. The game changers this term are the head and tail of our spine.
Midfield is now more than sorted with Downs gone.
The base - HD and NW are a massive delta on last term, in so many ways.
However should Joel leave as predicted and expected, our spine will be weakened massively.
RM said he would initially sort out our defence, then midfield, then attack. He failed. We plummeted from Playoff finalists to a lowly 15th.
Nothing progressed. We regressed. Esp our defence - the thing RM said he would tackle first.
Joel is the key. Without Cooper's Joel, Martin is gone.
4 weeks into a 6 week much heralded pre-season and we seem worse. The Plymouth game was flat, devoid of zip and ambition. Today seemed no better.
Martin needs to step it up - actions speak louder than words, Rusty.

There is nothing to suggest Russel Martin is anything other than what he has shown to date. A manager that likes possession and passing and who wins the same number of games as he loses and buys and develops good players for sale with a good mark up.
I believe he was encouraged to take coaching assistance and declined it which probably will cost him. The same mistake made by Garry Monk. He needs to improve as a manager that wins football matches. Man City are not easy to play against. Far from it. Calderwood was coming. then was not. and might have been the step needed in the coaching set up. Perhaps a Winter suggestion. He would have been wise to take that advice on board. Modest Rovers today seemed to waltz through the Swansea backline with ease.
He talks about the need to be challenged then 'loses' his assistant and DoF and appoints a low key assistant from the academy. This is ketchup free 'Wengerworld'.
Hope the excuse we were tired isn't used like last season. Nothing worse travelling home from an away game hearing that while the other team were flying around the pitch. If we keep Piroe there is always a chance of a good season.

November will be a key month. The season shuts down for the World Cup and I would imagine a lot of clubs in the Premier League and Championship may look to change managers. If we are doing well will clubs swoop for Martin....?

Hopefully
So in reply to a post asking if we are doing well, will someone swoop for our manager, you reply " Hopefully " ? So imagine ( I know it may be a stretch) that we are top two come the WC break, you would hope that Martin leaves and probably takes several staff ( and players in January ) Unbelievable Jim

Unbelievable indeed
As much as I was overall in the anti Cooper group during his reign, had he kept us in the top two, I would not have wanted him gone. Yet you are saying you want Martin gone even if we were top two at the time ? I think back to days of Hollins championship win. Much of the football was dire, yet no one was calling for his head. Same surely if RM achieves the lofty heights of top two ?

You are not quite right there. Firstly ,I wasn’t a Cooper boy. Far from it. I am saying. Top Two is a ludicrous suggestion hence my suggestion I would like to see him leave. It won’t happen.
We are seeing much unadulterated faux support crap as regards him and I am simply calling it as I see it.
I do not want any young puppies drowned because of my views. Many of you seem fit to burst
How has Andy Fish made out thus far . Improved.? More commanding? Clean Sheets against lower clubs ? Yiu don’t get my drift do you?
But it’s alright
You re keeping the flow tidy. Others should do the same

I just want us to learn from our mistakes. There’s nothing more frustrating than conceding exactly the same type of goal over and over and over again.
Martin's teams conceded too many soft goals last season. His argument was it was because of various factors. Lack of fitness, lack of quality players, lack of preseason and time to prefect the methods. I have the suspicion that the set up is a 'structural problem'.
As a person in engineering will tell you if the structural design is wrong, extra reinforcement and better materials will have no effect and not cover the structural cracks.
Structure issues are best assessed by a trained eye. Experience. Calderwood perhaps had this experience. If the structural issues are there and not addressed the club is heading into the season blind folded.
Martin does talk about assessment and attention to detail so it should be 'in hand'. However if the young men coaches do not identify issues then the club will not progress.

You don’t need a trained eye, an attention to detail or indeed a phD in structural engineering to figure out that constantly giving the opposition the ball from your own goal kicks and allowing them to advance on the goalkeeper unchallenged is gonna make you have a baaaad time.

It's harder to score from 60 yards than it is from 5. Hence it's better to hoof a ball clear rather than stroke it to defenders already under pressure. It is criminally irresponsible the way we defend. No excuses at all
We had the talent last season to make play off but failed due to not doing the basicss.
Not sure what people need to see the light but many are blinded by the light ,for sure.

Hopefully the restart coach will have eradicated this issue.

Drawing back to back games after a 3 goal headstart was...irritating, to say the least.
If we are smarter at the back, move the ball forward more quickly or simply get rid whn under pressure we have the tools to be challenging this season.
I wanted Cooper gone but having the benefit of hindsight, I 100% think Cooper would be taking this squad into the top 6 and maybe the automatc spots too.
Martin is getting the backing Cooper deserved, my opinion of Cooper has changed, apart from the gormless bit, he is still very gormless! The jury is still out on Martin though, he has still to prove himself and I also don't understand the level of unaduterated, whole hearted support for him right now. He hasnt earned it yet.

You were told this over and over again last season. You weren’t having any of it.
You were insistent it was the right way because “Liverpool and Man City do it”. Although you seemed completely oblivious to the fact we set up or play nothing remotely like them and Martin has never set up anything like them at any point in his career.
Having 75% of the ball, mostly in non threatening areas (non threatening for them anyway, it’s very threatening for us if, and when, we lose it), doesn’t make you a free flowing possession side. It makes you a negative side scared to advance in fear of the opposition having the ball.
I’m glad you are now waking up to the utter senseless nonsense he serves up. There is a reason he has never finished in the top half of any season he has attempted, yet immediately before his arrival and immediately after his departure - the club in question has always been on the up.
He is the great stopper of growth.

Ive asked for EVIDENCE for "supporting " him and seen nothing but HOPE. We still have Andy Fisher as a goalkeeper and Grimes captain and that alone shows Rus is clueless.
Really can't see much change in where we finish to last season. He won't change the way he expects us to ''Bravely'' defend and I see nothing to believe we will create more chances unless of course our new set piece coach gets us 10-15 goals this season. 12th-16th for me with the regular boredom and occasional good performance continuing.

Top post.
What's the pragmatic way forward ?
With still no rationale from the Martinistas, nothing cogent to hang on to with Rusty, what's the best we can hope for ?
