2022-2023 Squad 00:29 - Apr 10 with 69023 viewsHullDale

Just had a quick look at the squad, and who is contracted for next season:

Contracted for 2022/23
Sam Graham - Summer 2023
Max Taylor - Summer 2023
Aidy White - Summer 2023

Liam Kelly - Summer 2023
Conor Grant - Summer 2023
Jimmy Keohane - Summer 2023
James Ball - Summer 2024
Ethan Brierley - January 2024

Abraham Odoh - Summer 2023
Luke Charman - Summer 2024
Tahvon Campbell - Summer 2024

Out of Contract
Joel Coleman
Jay Lynch
Brad Wade

Jim McNulty
Eoghan O'Connell
Jeriel Dorsett (loan expires)
Joe Dunne
Corey O’Keeffe
Paul Downing (loan expires)
Max Clark

George Broadbent (loan expires)
Stephen Dooley
Alex Newby

Josh Andrews (loan expires)
Danny Cashman (loan expires)
Matt Done

10 players contracted, 17 either out of contract or loan expiring. I half expect us to try and sign Broadbent & Dorsett permanently, but one thing is for certain - 2022/2023 will be a fully Stockdale squad. Out of everybody in contract for next season only Keohane & Grant are survivors from the BBM era! Hopefully the rumoured increased playing budget, coupled with a more settled club and experience from this season, will see a more competitive team next season.

There's definitely a risk involved with Downing's injuries previous to Dale. The staff hopefully have a better understanding of that risk now he's been with us a few months. Agree we should only sign him if we're confident in him being available for the majority of a season.

To be fair, there is a risk of injury with all players. With Downing they need to look at his career as a whole and take it from there. We are much better defensively with him in. What we are missing most is a leader in midfield, another GJ. O'Connell isn't the answer and I don't think his heart is in it, as good as he has shown he can be. There must be a GK out there better than we have. Need a permanent keeper.

There is a risk of injury with all players, but it's fair to say that those that have consistently sustained injuries are at a higher risk than those that haven't, surely?

We've made the mistake time and time again in the last few seasons of offering (often long and lucrative) deals to players who simply can't stay fit. I hope if we sign Downing he proves me wrong but tbh, even after signing him on loan he's only played in 9 of the 20 games we've played so I don't have much faith in him doing so.

Tangled up in blue.

My current thinking but it changes on a match by match basis.

Out of Contract
Joel Coleman (Release)
Jay Lynch (Release)
Brad Wade (Is he good enough now to be a No 2 and challenge for No 1? If not release)

Jim McNulty (Player/Coach contract)
Eoghan O'Connell (Offer contract doubt he'll stay)
Jeriel Dorsett (Offer contract doubt he'd sign)
Joe Dunne (Unfortunately not had the chances release)
Corey O’Keeffe (Release)
Paul Downing (Wouldn't offer a contract due to cost and injuries)
Max Clark (Release)

George Broadbent (Offer a contract if it's good value)
Stephen Dooley (Offer a year)
Alex Newby (Offer a year)

Josh Andrews (No chance just signed a new deal at Birmingham)
Danny Cashman (No chance only signed for Cov just before coming to us)
Matt Done (Offer Player/Coach contract?)

Poll: What are we more excited for?

Out of Contract
Joel Coleman (Release)
Jay Lynch (Keep - shown enough recently to be at least No. 2)
Brad Wade (Release)

Jim McNulty (Offer contract)
Eoghan O'Connell (Offer contract)
Jeriel Dorsett (No chance)
Joe Dunne (Release)
Corey O’Keeffe (Offer contract, but we will have competition)
Paul Downing (No offer - injury prone)
Max Clark (Offer contract on right wages)

George Broadbent (Release)
Stephen Dooley (Offer contract on cheap wages)
Alex Newby (Release - gone backwards)

Josh Andrews (no offer)
Danny Cashman (No offer)
Matt Done (Offer contract - can play multiple positions, good to have in a small squad)

Massive work needs to be done in centre half and defensive mid positions. Would like to see 2 new centre halves, regardless of whether EOC stays (possibly one of these a loanee) and a strong physical centre mid. 1 new GK to compete with Lynch and a couple of forward players.

I appreciate that football is about opinions, but I'm surprised to see people willing to offer contracts to so many of our out of contract players.

Taking the season as a whole, we have been woeful for the majority. RS needs an overhaul and wiggle room to bring in fresh blood with the higher budget we are led to believe he has. Remember he already has White, Graham, Odoh and Taylor under contract, none of whom RS appears to have faith in and are likely to be squad players at best.

Of those out of contract, I would release them all bar O'Connell without hesitation. I like Downing, but we cannot guarantee his fitness and therefore cannot take a risk on him.

Our midfield has been arguably the worst it has been for a decade, why would we want to keep Dooley, Broadband etc? They are bang average players and I'm being generous with that description.

As for Matt Done, he should have been released years ago IMHO.

I agree with a lot of that BH.

Out of Contract:

Joel Coleman - RELEASE

Jay Lynch - RELEASE - Need a keeper who can be a proper number 1, use Kelly or Craven as back up keeper and save a wage

Brad Wade - RELEASE

Jim McNulty - Offer coaching role only

Eoghan O'Connell - Offer two year deal, won't sign it anyway

Joe Dunne - RELEASE

Corey O’Keeffe - UNDECIDED (Wouldn't lose sleep over him going, think he is one of the reasons we play 3 at the back, to try and get him further up the field. Based on his pre-January form you'd definitely offer him a deal but not been anywhere near that since re-signing in Jan.

Max Clark - UNDECIDED (Think there's a good player in there but another who's started off well but faded out. Wouldn't mind him staying but would lose sleep over him going either.

Stephen Dooley - RELEASE (Just doesn't offer enough. Can and should do much better than him)

Alex Newby - UNDECIDED (Always thought he is one of our most creative players and can be on his day but he's also incredibly frustrating to watch so if he stays, fair enough, if not, not overly bothered)

Matt Done - RELEASE (Appreciate he's played a fair amount at left wing back but 5 goals in his last 119 (I think) games for a forward isn't good enough, no goals this season at all. Also appreciate his game has changed as he's used now to stretch defences but if we're being honest, he's been incredibly lucky to get his last two contract extensions and at 33, time is time now surely. Will be a decent wage saved as well.

I wouldn't mind Paul Downing signing a permanent deal with us if the deal is right for us. We know we're only going to get maybe half the games out of him but he's been excellent in his loan spell I think so 25 games from him next season could be very worthwhile if the deal is right.

Dorsett has improved greatly as the season has gone on but struggles immensely when the ball is anywhere near his feet and with O'Connell leaving, we can't afford that I don't think.

Cashman and Broadbent haven't offered anywhere near enough, or anywhere near what we were expecting from them so personally I wouldn't want either here beyond their loan spells, in fact I'd have cut Cashman's short if I could and never have extended Broadbent's.

Josh Andrews has been more injury prone than anyone else I think. Very stop start. Can be ok, can leave you wondering what he offers given his height. Think we'll have seen the last of him come the end of the season.

Of the contracted players next season, two of them have to be moved on for me and neither should have been given two year deals but were, whether that was desperation to build a squad in double quick time I don't know but they both need moving on this summer. White isn't short of ability at all, but he has only played 11 times in the league this season. Graham, unfortunately, is miles off and will probably be a name mentioned in future worst eleven lineups.

I suspect Stockdale is very keen for the season to finish so he can get to work on another rebuild. Some of it is fixing his own mistakes, some of it is getting rid of players he inherited. His squad this summer will show us more of what he is about as a manager but with 12 months experience in the role as well and hopefully no off-field issues hindering his recruitment.

I look forward to seeing this rebuild and think we can build a squad capable of challenging for the playoffs which will be the aim for next season.

The likes of Done, O'Connell and McNulty are rumoured big earners so them leaving should free up wages to rebalance the squad. I pretty much agree with Chaff and BossHog, especially regarding Done and Dooley. Clark is a funny one, with him looking pretty good initially but he has regressed to a norm. A promotion challenging team should be looking for more.

I would though have Dorsett back next season either on loan or permanently. He has come on leaps and bounds and with more experience and exposure I think his distribution, which is the weakest part of his game will continue to improve.

What I am hoping for is early signings, especially some decent loans who make a impact as we have not really had it this season.

Can't really disagree with anyone after the season we've had. My post above is definitely my opinion after a good result. I'd also not be upset if everyone was released.

In reality it's a squad RS has to build to a certain budget and RS will have to weigh up the value for money we have with the current squad. For example Dooley, Done or Newby on reduced terms for a year might mean they're the best we can get for that money, it also gives the squad a bit of stability. Obviously we'd hope they weren't starting every week and we'll need to bring in better players to start.

Summary: I don't think we'll release everyone some will sign on for another year, just need to hope the deals done are good value.

Yep, I believe he is OOC at Sheffield United though, and it feels like the extended loan was more for our benefit to see if we want to keep him rather than to get him a new contract there?

Guessing he'd be on more money there than we'd offer him - also guess I could've made that clearer.

I'll be honest, at this stage I think talk of the play-offs is way off.

Things have certainly improved at home and our record at Spotland is actually pretty impressive with (somehow) just one league defeat in our last 16 home league matches. In the last few weeks we've seen a lot more fight (first half vs Carlisle and second half vs Hartlepool) but we continue to lack quality regardless, and as others have pointed out this squad needs a huge overhaul. Plus, away from home, we've been absolutely dreadful of late. I missed the Orient game so since Scunthorpe I think I've travelled about 1500 miles and seen us lose four times, fail to score and barely create a thing. All four of those performances have been dreadful and from what I've read, Orient may have been the worst of the lot.

Our best player by some distance is Eoghan O'Connell and he's very likely to leave this summer. Keohane and Grant are good players, and I think there's potential in the likes of Ball and Charman, although to be expecting them to lead us on a play-off push next season based on what we've seen since January is a huge ask. I think the likes of Kelly and O'Keeffe could feature regularly in a play-off chasing side but they lack consistency, you have to play a specific way to get the best out of either of them and I suspect O'Keeffe will leave regardless with his contract expiring.

I think a handful of players could do a job as a squad option, such as Odoh and Lynch, then after that I see a squad that needs 11 or 12 new players to make it compete. I know Stockdale's recruitment has been disrupted to say the least so far but it's a huge, huge ask to go and sign 11 or 12 new players to create a play-off chasing side from near enough scratch while also finding the time to allow them to settle, gel and create the kind of team spirit you need to be fighting towards the top of the division.

(That said, I'd absolutely rather us be taking chances on new players than persisting with the likes of Clark and Newby).

I'm not that bothered where we finish in the league next season, but I do want to see a team that can adapt better than we can at the moment, can go into away games without the fear they seem to be showing at the moment and can show signs that they're fighting for each other and the manager more consistently than they are doing at the moment. Do that, and we can talk about the play-offs the following year.

Tangled up in blue.

I understand folk wanting a dozen new 'better' players but many of the current squad perhaps being "the best we can get for that money," is key. I think the days of a Lambert, Holt, Le Fondre etc being available from another lower league club on the cheap are gone - the top clubs hoover up all and sundry & stick them in U23 academies. Not very positive I know, but maybe we need to lower our expectations?

2022-2023 Squad on 13:23 - Apr 21 with 3689 viewskrafty80

I think there are some very valid points being made here about the summer's upcoming shape-shifting. I don't see us realistically signing 11-12 new players and forming a play-off challenging squad off the back of it tbh, it's just too ambitious and risks instability (especially if 4-5 of the signings are duds). On that basis I think the 'least worst' option will mean we could offer another year to the likes of Dooley, Done and Clark.

The real area of worry for me is the goalkeeper and defence. From the games I've seen lately as an exile, Lynch has found some solidity, but he still doesn't look like a top six League 2 keeper. And a defence shorn of Dorsett, Downing and EOC means RS is going to have to pull some rabbits out of hats given the doubts over the quality of Max Taylor and Sam Graham. The focus has to be at the back primarily in my opinion. Add in the emerging trend to very established league clubs to be dragged into the relegation mire in the past two seasons, and the clear financial (financially doped?) muscle of the teams likely to come up from the National League, and I won't lie: I am a bit anxious about next year.

However, one antidote to this could be the forward line. I reckon it's really important that Charman continues to develop, and while our remaining games this season could be classed as dead rubbers, wouldn't it be fantastic if Luke got a goal or two? If we can establish a more attacking mindset from the off next season with Charman, Tav and Grant/Ball, plus some new lads, then we could take some of the pressure off a possibly totally new back three or four. And we would be more entertaining to watch. That's my cause for optimism! #UTDNFS

Totally - can't believe anyone would think offering him a deal would be a good idea. Bang average is being kind.

Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10

With a bigger budget and current high earners off the books then there will be a bigger pot available to rebalance the squad. With Kelly as backup you could get away with one senior keeper, especially with emergency loans being available for injuries etc. The supposed transfer embargo and late appointment of Stockdale meant he was in effect signing the leftovers, both permanent and loan signings.

He should be able to assemble a better squad for next season and a more solid defence would go a long way to achieving this.

My current thinking but it changes on a match by match basis.

Out of Contract
Joel Coleman (Release)
Jay Lynch (Release)
Brad Wade (Is he good enough now to be a No 2 and challenge for No 1? If not release)

Jim McNulty (Player/Coach contract)
Eoghan O'Connell (Offer contract doubt he'll stay)
Jeriel Dorsett (Offer contract doubt he'd sign)
Joe Dunne (Unfortunately not had the chances release)
Corey O’Keeffe (Release)
Paul Downing (Wouldn't offer a contract due to cost and injuries)
Max Clark (Release)

George Broadbent (Offer a contract if it's good value)
Stephen Dooley (Offer a year)
Alex Newby (Offer a year)

Josh Andrews (No chance just signed a new deal at Birmingham)
Danny Cashman (No chance only signed for Cov just before coming to us)
Matt Done (Offer Player/Coach contract?)

I’m baffled. What would be good value for Broadbent’s contract? Him paying us?
