Isle of Wight fans...why the Saints? 12:45 - Aug 22 with 2354 views | athripp | I am a new sign up here so please excuse the post if asked previously!! Born and bred on the Island in the mid 50s and living there until I left school in 75, I often wondered why islanders chose where their local football allegiances should be. It could be one of three though mainly blue or red and white!! For me oddly enough it was the journey over and the city itself. Red Funnel ferry trip up Southampton water and past those fantastic liners was infinitely preferable to that dreadful grey port along the coast. The only saving grace in Portsmouth was the trolley bus system they had then and lobbing coins at the mud larks below the harbour station. Southampton Central station was a place to behold and the dock railway system fascinating to this kid who fondly remembered trips to a model shop in Northam in the early 60s!! It was generally thought East side of Island went Blue and west red. Family traditions too I guess. Not so sure now what the split is. Probably all wear Scouse shirts sadly. Any one from “Vectis” on here do let me know as don’t get over that much now that family have departed!!

Isle of Wight fans...why the Saints? on 13:21 - Aug 22 with 2296 views | dirk_doone | My theory: nearest ferry port. Cowes = Saints; Ryde = Pompey. So, someone from Freshwater would support Saints whereas someone from Bembridge would support Pompey. My 92-year-old uncle lives near Sandown but he spends all of his spare time playing golf. He's not very happy at the moment as he says all the grockles are creating traffic jams on the usually quiet roads, which puts him off driving to the golf course in August.

The ferry port theory is pretty much correct. I had a house on the island and Freshwater/West Wight area folks were saints fans, ditto Cowes, ryde/East Wight Pompey, the rest a random mix.

I grew up on the island and supported Saints as everyone else supported Liverpool at the tine. Keegan signing sealed the deal, i was not aware of Portsmouth and didn’t have any mate that supported them
