Not good 12:58 - Apr 9 with 3826 viewspikeypaul

With the restrictions on FOBTs coming in last year and paving the way for 1000s of shops around the country to close things look grim for them, I can see this virus being the second bullet ending the days of a vast amount more.

People tend not to go back to habitual practices when introduced to alternatives, especially when the alternatives are far easier and offer greater value.

The majority of betting shop customers are the older non tech savvy person who’s numbers naturally decrease as the years go by.

Social distancing will go on by some for a very long time after government guidelines have passed, and many customers would have been forced down the online route to place a bet, never to return to a shop that’s inconvenient and time consuming.

Bricks and mortar customers are massively more expensive for the company than the click customer .

If I were a high street bookmaking till operator I would start looking for a new job.

Yes it would ,the till monkeys need to start looking now, since sure as anything most will be within 12 months, The behind the scenes middle management who no one ever sees will be fine and diverted to the online operations of their relative companies.

The high street in general will be massacred over the next few years and online in every sector will take a further giant leap now so many have realised how eadier it is to do things online at a click of a mouse or tap of a smart phone.

You have to feel sorry for all the till boys and girls and if they have any sense they will get into an expanding field as soon as possible rather than sit in something that is/will be sinking faster than the titanic.

You have no need, it’s already started.

William Hill alone has closed over 700 shops in the last 6 months and that was before the virus. Will not be surprised if they close the rest now with them focusing on the massive American online market which new regulations have paved the way for them to do.

I watched something recently that highlighted the fact the only reason they keep bookies open is so people put vasts amount of money into slot machines.

Don't think bookies have any morals

Surprised they have lasted this long when you can bet and watch any race on your phone,

You could have a laugh with others in them, just like pubs that's going out of fashion

Feel sorry for the staff losing their job, but these FOBTs and gambling in general have caused thousands of people a great deal of heartache and distress. Hopefully the benefits of removing FOBTs will more than outweigh the negatives.

There'll be loads of bosses of loads of trades adapting to what is going on at the moment and finding out there are other, cheaper avenues of conducting their business. Even us consumers will further evolve into being too shit scared to venture out into high footfall shopping centres for some time.

I'm not missing gambling in the slightest, had 18 months off several years ago, might decide to go longer this time.

Online gambling sites, like Sky poker, are making a fortune during this crisis, there are thousands of new players on there throwing their money away while the regular pro players rake it in.

They'll make more money online than with the shops on the High Streets, no rent, staff etc. Its probably what they want to be honest.

Hopefully the lack of betting opportunities is helping some to break the habit. Or am I just being naive.

I see virtually all replies can see where the gambling industry is heading and yes these companies are making a fortune and causing untold misery.

If I had my way all the parasite shops profiting off the vulnerable would be closed.
