Alan Nixon confirming we are in the process of agreeing a fee with Sheff U for Done. Was spotted at the game yesterday too.

I'm not sure why players training with the club that is paying their wages suggests a deal is not close?

They could be made to train with the stiffs, I suppose, but I don't think they're on bad terms with Wilder are they?

Also, neither featured in their squad against Stoke tonight.

This is the BBC Sport reporter for South Yorkshire:

Contrary to speculation, Jack Redshaw trained with us too just before he departed.

Up the Dale - NOT for sale!

Not wanting to kill the excitement... but is there a danger this rumour was started simply because Matt Done was in attendance on Saturday?

Fingers crossed, sounds like we are lacking pace on the counter and Done offers this.

What do people think of the Inmann and Williams signings, are they looking like they have potential

I think Williams is very workmen like and got some decent tackles in from the front tonight, If anyone thought he was going to replace NML then think again ! I hope he will grow in confidence and start to take players on more as he looks to have a decent delivery with his left foot. What people have got to remember is its a big step up and it will take time for him to build his fitness up and get use to the pace, I just hope people will allow him that time and not get on his back.
As for Inman it also takes time to get use to his new team mates and surroundings but I'm sure he will start to deliver. Don't forget nothings won in August unless your from bUry !!!

Questions for the manager:

- Joe Rafferty has been ill and lacks minutes on the pitch, combined with the Joe Bunney injury, are you concerned about starting the league campaign without your first-choice fullbacks?
- You said you at least want to sign a ‘keeper and a new left-back, any joy there, especially considering the above question? Will you make do at right-back till Rafferty is fit?
- Related to the above again, how long do you intend to give trialist Ntlhe before making a decision on signing him?
- Is there any truth in the media speculation (we know there is) about Matt Done returning to the club? If so, when are we likely to see a resolution, if any?
- Are there any other positions you’re looking to strengthen? If so, can you tell us where?
- You mentioned in an earlier interview the possibility of players leaving. How likely is this before the end of August? Who is in the frame?

All very relevant questions, but who do we know that has a ball sack big enough to ask Keith those sort of questions ? Without wearing a large tin hat?

Surely part of being a decent local reporter is managing relationships with key stakeholders such as Hilly.

Don't think you'll be getting many more interviews out of him if you asked those questions!

Thanks for the input, but you're wrong.

A local reporter's role is to challenge and represent public interest - be that the council or the local football club.

It's about managing relationships sure, but one of mutual professional respect - not matey, matey.

A football manager should expect to field questions such as those. They're not controversial and are being asked on behalf of the readership (supporters).

I've interviewed belligerent managers before and it's amazing how cooperative they became after they saw their belligerence in print.

I don't understand what is wrong with the questions above being asked. Non of them are offensive or too invasive, just questions about Rochdale FC who Hill is the manager of and the very one person who will know the answers to the above questions.
Why would a reporter be afraid to ask relevant questions or to be able to ask Keith to substantiate or deny rumours.
He only has to say sorry I don't want to answer that or bat it away, Is Keith Hill really that unapproachable to be interviewed?
So much for team Rochdale if that is the case and such a shame.

Hill might well answer those questions.

Problem is, nobody is asking them.

Come on....its Keith Hill, whose claim to fame is limited to two promotions from the fourth tier of english football. Why do we think we have to put him on a pedestal like this. Ask the questions and if he refuses to answer or is belligerent or rude to the reporter asking them then so be it. Report what he says.

You'd think we were talking about someone who had won multiple champions leagues/world cups.

Havent Middlesborough just fallen out with a couple of reporters from the Chronicle over reporting that Monk didn’t like. He’s just banned the pair and said he won’t speak to either of them.

It happens and it's Monk and, by association, the club who look like tvvats.

If the reporters are out of line, then that's different. If they've reported an off-the-record comment or printed a falsehood, then they're asking for it.

They are relevant questions, no doubt about that

The only proviso I'd have in having them asked is whether they might prejudice the manager's attempt to resolve them, without pissing off someone in the squad who he's trying to keep on board - just in case his attempts fail

Even batting the question away would lead to further speculation and mis-interpretation, which he'd be seeking to avoid. I'd also add that a local reporter with the ability to filch real information from Hilly wouldn't stay local for long!

I'm not wrong then Chris, its part of the job.

Anyone covering Dale will likely be the sports reporter for the MEN or similar publication will feel there's an obvious public interest in the football club.

What then is the point in winding up a manager of the club that is sitting on a 5 year contract and likely to be here for some time?

Don't get me wrong, i'd love for someone to try and see where it gets them. I just don't think the local rag quite wields the power of a national or the power it may of had in the days you trained. The internet and digitization of the industry has changed things.

Your blatant ignorance to my training and working environment aside - you're missing the point.

Why should those questions wind up the manager? Why should he not be asked those questions?

Did you have "copy and paste" lectures in your training?

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Yes his claim to fame is limited to two promotions from the fourth tier of English football (and a play off final), achievements which ten years ago seemed were beyond the wildest dreams of most Dale supporters, which makes him, in my book anyway, the greatest manager weve ever had.
Having said that, if questions need asking, it shouldnt matter one iota what a manager has or has not achieved, or at what level.

Would he be allowed to answer about Matt Done? I know a handful of managers will frequently do so but I'd have thought 90% of managers would have two stock answers to the Done question:
* It would be disrespectful to discuss another club's player
* I will only comment on transfers once they are completed

If the two clubs are in talks as is believed based on the speculative tweets, I'd have thought it wouldn't go down well at all to have a manager speak publicly about it. Had Lee Clarke announced that Bury were trying to secure a deal to sign Andy Cannon, I doubt our ire would be softened by excuses that he was only answering the questions put to him. Like I said, I know many managers do cross that line, and Hilly may well have done so himself at various times over the years.

The point about a adequate local journo is valid tho. Its not even worth the effort reading it in Tesco's anymore. It's reached the stage where if the Ob ceased publication tomorrow, it would have any impact on Dale. And that's far more to do with the quality of local journalism in this area currently rather than any national trends.
