You'd ben a bit miffed if you were Russia. The fact that crowd segregation and policing was virtually non-existent does beg the question as to how exactly they are supposed to control their fans inside the stadium. Any other team would say exactly the same..

Dont get me wrong I was as shocked as the next man at the violence inside and outside the stadium. Just puzzled why Russia are responsible inside the stadium - surely its down to UEFA...

Probably because a team is deemed to be responsible for the behavious of its fans? If they behaved themselves then crowd segregation and policing wouldn't be an issue. In other words, the primary cause of the problem is the behaviour of their fans and that has been recognised. As you've probably guessed I support the decision. One more strike and throw them out (and any other team who follows suit for that matter)

Yeah, I agree, although in Russia's case it permeates right the way through the association and into the government. If Greg Dyke called English hooligans 'real men' and said 'congratulations lads' on Twitter you'd expect some kind of sanction and rightly so.

Also, lets not forget the late 80s when English football was barred from Europe for a couple of years.

The more I think about this the more I consider the Russians to have been 'state sponsored' to the point that these were in fact para-militaries that were operating, not only the use of weapons, having MMA gloves and gumshields but more to the point that they were acting pretty much like snatch squads, in smallish numbers, well built individuals who when the French OB came along suddenly were able to disappear with not one person being arrested, yet leave a trail of destruction and injuries that were exclusively English. Type of small time thing that Putin would happily see happen to help with the destabilising of the tournament and to allow the English take the flak from all and sundry which lets face it he has all but succeeded in doing. Now with the threat of expulsion hanging over their heads, just watch the Russian filth melt away.

It is frightening that the Russian establishment are essentially supporting the violence. This has wider concerns in how Russia now behaves on the world-stage. At what point do the stronger, sensible and more established world FA's tell FIFA and UEFA where to stick it and run their own version of the world and european championships?

Why would the world want to visit the Russian world cup? I say boycott and bankrupt them before they de-stabilise the world any further.

As with all Russian bad behaviour they'll just wave it off as 'Western aggression'.

As someone else said, they've invaded a country, shot down a plane, and murdered people on foreign soil. No shame.

This country has things to be ashamed of but it's not racist, homophobic, excessively corrupt, or murders critics of the government.

Russia is the 21st century's biggest barrier to peace and stability ahead of climate change and Islamic extremism.

'A day previously, the MP Igor Lebedev, who sits on the executive board of the Russian football union, said he saw nothing wrong with the scenes: “Quite the opposite lads, keep it up!” The top law enforcement official Vladimir Markin said the fans were “real men” and Europe had become too used to gay parades to recognise them as such.'

Have to say I'm surprised at this. Didn't think they'd have the balls. Unusually sensible and straight-thinking decision.

Would it be classed as 'Rexit'?

Is the remark about having the balls a pun, Brian?

and on a serious note, if they were disqualified after the next game (for example), how would the process continue? (i.e. Wales might need a draw to qualify but they don't have an opponent to play).

Yes I was thinking that Brian,as only 4 best thirds go through, only playing two games would disadvantage whoever finishes third in Engalnd's group.

Also what are the use of the football Intel lot ? surely they should have been prepared and doing some Intel on the Russians instead of just standing there filming people in bars , I get they soon shot of when it kicked off
I really hope that the French get knocked out and we actually go on to win the thing now that would be justice

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

I doubt there's any need for state sponsorship. I believe Russians still have to do military service so they would have a common grounding in basic infantry tactics. They can pick up helmets, gloves etc anywhere even if they didn't bring them from Russia.

Just a word about Greg Dyke. I've slagging off the FA for years for just lying back and letting England and English fans take the blame for every act of violence within a mile of a football match. Well done Mr Dyke for having a go at UEFA. Who knows how much it influenced the action taken against Russia.

They could always play the last group games behind closed doors, and if they are thrown out of the tournament,at least their results would stand.

This, wandering into unnecessarily conspiracy theory territory with that.

Much more likely that they are just happy not to do anything about the hooligans that exist.

Everywhere has hooligans, pretending these Russians are hugely different from anyone else's violent thugs bar them being a bit more violent.

We've spent years listening to the idiots in this country, (and yes at this club) wittering on about codes, honour etc, and using military terms to describe themselves, when what they are is numpties that want to punch other people.

Russia may not care about theirs, but that doesn't mean these ones are any closer to being actual military than our own idiots ever have been.

Depends what happens between now and 2018,and not just the football front.

The problem is that the market is no longer providing the necessary supply of hooligans.

Our golden generation of hooligans is now sitting at home writing hooligan memoirs or acting as consultants on hooligan documentaries.

Until we can establish a hooligans academy I am afraid we are going to have to outsource hooliganism to foreign hooligans who can come in quickly and do the job.

Now the Russian striker Artem Dzyuba and manager are weighing in with the victim mentality and complete denial that's so characteristic of the voice of the Russian state.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/jun/14/russia-handed-suspended-euro-20

Russia will be disqualified from Euro 2016 if there is a repeat of the crowd trouble seen at the Stade Vélodrome that marred their opening match with England in Marseille, Uefa has ruled. However the Russian striker Artem Dzyuba immediately responded that the English fans were no angels and equally to blame.

Dzyuba also criticised the British media for its coverage of the incidents in Marseille, claiming it was politically motivated and aimed at stripping Russia of its hosting rights for the 2018 World Cup.

Russia’s coach, Leonid Slutsky, also criticised the “unethical” behaviour of England fans and said it was unfair to only blame the Russians. He said: “We do not know what happened on the streets, of course, but when the Russian national anthem was played and all the people were shouting, the English supporters, this was something not ethical at all. And all the gestures we received when we were on our bus on the way to the stadium from all these English supporters. "
