Anyone remember the player named after a German newspaper? He used to smoke like f*ck in the 70s.
I know who you mean, but can't think of his name.
Brilliant player was Cruyff, without doubt the best player in the World in his time, plus Barcelona benefitted greatly from his talent and has probably been the biggest influence on them being the team that they are now, yet another sad, sad day for the World of Football.

RIP Mr Cruyff.
Played for Man United he did.
The first ever recipient of a Planet Swans Lifetime Achievement Award.

Gunter Netzer smoked and drank quite extravagantly if I remember right. hell of a player too.
On Cruyff. That Holland team led by Cruyff changed football. That they lost 2 WC finals to playing against home nations, and all that comes with that, is a real shame.
Bought my first adidas t shirt mid '70's on the back of seeing Cruyff at the '74 World Cup, had to be the orange with black stripes one. Epitome of cool European player back in the day, the like of which we only got to see in highlights on Midweek Sports Special. Greatest player I saw at the time 'til Maradona came along. How that '74 Dutch team never won the World Cup will be forever a mystery. Legend. RIP
Oh,..Dave, what's occuring?

You know you're talking about a footballing great when they create a trick that is named after them and replicated forever more. A true legend and champion of the beautiful game. Rest in peace and thanks for the memories.

heres a cracking Sky Sports documentary on his life.

One thing stood out while watching that documentary. He claimed that the deciding factor for his going to Barcelona after winning three straight continental titles was that there was no discipline in the squad. That would be like Berbatov claiming that his teammates shouldn't be smoking. In light of the fact that he admits that he was smoking behind a tree while the rest of his Ajax team was running in the forest, it is interesting to hear his criticism of Laudrup, that he didn't give his all in practice.

Seems to have had more than his fair share of vanity and arrogance. A rebel without a cause for much of his career as a player and as a manager/administrator. He was gone within one month when appointed for his first non-managerial post with Ajax as technical director in 2008. His term as honorary president with Barcelona lasted only 4 months. It seems that his arrogance got the better of him.

It's so often the case with Dutch players that supreme ability is tainted by other issues. A nation that has developed so many great players should have more than one tournament to its name. Probably would have if they didn't invariably end up fighting with each other.
Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.
