I think the current EU VAT Directive says that countries can set their own rates but it has to be between 15 & 25%.

Tax cuts on the way for 30 million people on 16:09 - May 10 by exiledclaseboy | I believe that's the plan, yes. The manifesto also contains a pledge not to increase NI. I only glanced over the Tory manifesto pre-election because it wasn't as if I was ever going to consider voting for them. I've now read all of it (not least because I had to for work). It's a truly terrifying document for anyone who values justice and fairness. I'm hoping against hope that Cameron's "one-nation" rhetoric in the immediate post-election aftermath trumps some of the stuff in the manifesto. [Post edited 10 May 2015 16:10]

Like Thatcher quoting St Francis you mean? That ended well for those who couldn't fight back. It's odd as I did very well out of Thatcherism, and should really be a natural tory but I can't bear the cruel mean minded ideology. Cameron, Osborne, Gove (ugh); they make my skin crawl...as did Blair, the sociopath Brown and idiot Clegg. Is there no political party that can provide a context of aspiration, wealth generation, and a compassionate social fabric. A mutual benefit of private enterprise and public infrastructure if you like. Is that really too much to ask? Obviously.

I think EU law only says that it has to be at least 15%. There's no upper limit as far as I know.

Tax cuts on the way for 30 million people on 15:37 - May 10 by jackonicko | I just had to replace my photo card driving licence. As I had recently renewed my passport, I filled out a form on the website, gave my passport number and paid the fee. The new driving licence, with my updated photo off the passport, was with me 48 hours later. Very impressed with that, I was. Don't tell me it's a bunch of elves at the DVLA doing it manually in the background. It would ruin my illusion. |
I did that too a couple of months ago and was quite impressed that there was such good co-operation between 2 seemingly unrelated government departments. Copies both the photograph and signature off your passport. Not sure about the elves thing.
Tax cuts on the way for 30 million people on 23:30 - May 10 with 1719 views | jackrabbit | It's been tough trying to stop smiling since Friday morning. The stunned unbelieving expressions on the faces of Paddy Pantsdown and Harriet Harperson reacting to the Exit Poll, the equally stunned reactions of the Beeb's finest, Nick Robinson and John Pienaar., who had expected to report a triumph of the Left. And to cap it all, to see Ed Balls on Jobseekers Allowance and the obnoxious Not-so-Gorgeous George Galloway consigned to the dustbin of history - well a bloke's cup runneth over doesn't it? It remains to see whether Labour have learned the lesson or whether they will yet again make a disastrous choice of leader. Labour has in its ranks, some extremely deluded people. You only had to hear Ken Livingstone on Friday spouting that Milliband's problem was that he wasn't socialist enough. As Allison Pearson wrote today "Even worse was Lord Kinnock, who popped up in the small hours to tell us, with breathtaking arrogance and condescension, that the British people always made the stupid mistake of not voting for his party because they swallowed evil Tory lies that Labour was bad for the economy. Now, where could we possibly have got that idea from?" Some similar statements just make you shake your head in disbelief. Leanne Wood reckons "the Tories have no future in Wales". Hmmmm. There are 11 Conservative seats in Wales - how many Plaid seats, Leanne? Oh I thought so - 3. The only sensible comments again have come from the estimable Alan Johnson - now there's a potential election winner, but that would be far too sensible for Labour. I see the problem for the Left summed up by the old adage that if you're not a socialist when you're young, you have no heart. But if you're still a socialist when you're old, you have no head. People are living longer. The country is getting older.

The case of people getting child benefit while living in Barbados, well, if you take the Barbados 'glamour-thought' out of it, if youve worked all your life and contributed to the tax & NI system then why shouldn't you get the pay back from the state? For example, my gran is 100 years old, she worked on a farm until she was 40 then worked in the co-op until she was 65. Now she lives in an old peoples complex in her own little house and has to pay full rent. Her friend, 'Betty' lives in the same complex but has never worked, Betty doesn't have to pay for the rent, its paid by the state.

It wasn't child benefit ! It was winter fuel allowance. My point was that they should save money for people in genuine need by means testing these things. The reason for making the point about the guy I know in Barbados wasn't anything to do with glamour - it's that he's getting winter fuel allowance in a country where the temperature never drops below 27 degrees :-)

I understand your sentiments on the above. I have seen it first hand where someone has worked all their lives and saved a pot of money to see it all go on sheltered housing while a neighbour in the same complex has done the opposite and is funded by the state. The moral question is what do you do with the likes of "Betty"?

Another pertinent question would be where are Betty's family when she needs them, assuming she has any?
| An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it. |

Doesn't help those out of work but reduces the gap between the rich and the poor.

ONE who s sold her home to pay ,the other someone who never thought of self provision and/or pisssed their cash away all their lives. Anyway... those on a good wage getting a tax cut will ,of course, either forego it or give it to the poor and, or will they vulnerable person..

That is a very good point, maybe some tax must be paid throughout your life out of benefits if you are not working, to pay towards the future care needs. If you work at any period then this would build up a tax credit towards this?

This remains the problem of course. We are a low tax country yet people expect the state to provide. Genuinely, I'd be happy to pay £1,000 more in tax if it meant our teachers weren't being laid off (happening now in Swansea), NHS wasn't stretched to the limit, less people were sleeping rough, roads weren't full of potholes, etc.).
