Which is the best captain to have played for us?

For me Ash has to just edge it, an immense player & captain of Wales, a proper leader.

Poll: What would you rather see.....

Ability wise would be Ash, as a leader would be Monk.

I wouldn't have Ash as captain myself, not for us and certainly not for Wales.

I want a mate like Flashberryjacks, who wears a Barnsley jersey with "Swans are my second team" on the back.

I agree I can't imagine Williams coping with the captaincy in the lower leagues like Monk did he'd be storming off in a huff.

Yes, I'm with you and Neath on this. I don't believe he is a great captain. There are times when the team need leading, when things aren't going as they should and crying out for leadership, encouragement, bollockings etc. but he remains too silent. Not a great fan tbh (as a captain that is).

Ash is a great captain, he leads by example and is certainly capable of organising the defence and he's not afraid of giving anyone a bollocking.

Who exactly would people want to be captain if not Ash? Nobody else is nearly as vocal as him.

Both great captains and leaders but Martinez would edge them both out as the very best of the lot.

I would say monk.

My only problem with williams was when things were going bad he didnt seem like the leader type. He looked depressed and didnt seem to try to sort the team out. On a good day though he is a good captain.

I would say monk only because he was captain for us through alot of things. But i would say its hard to compare because they are 2 different types of captains.

Neither of the OP's choices anywhere near Martinez

Everyone can be a good captain on a good day! It's when the sh1t starts hitting the fan that a good leader shows his credentials. IMO, Williams tends to duck under the parapet.

Nah,...... Monk.

We were always better with him in the side and it's not because he was a better player.

You should always choose your best players to put on the field, and then choose your captain out of them. Therefore its Williams on the basis its been at a consistent PL level.

Monk is a better leader of people though.

"Michu, Britton and Williams could have won 3-0 on their own. They wouldn't have required a keeper."

Your remark that Williams tends to duck under the parapet is too silly for words.

Committed, a leader of men, and a battler who will not shirk his responsibility in any way shape or form and has enjoyed proving people wrong, like Monk in fact.

Williams was told he want good enough to make it as a professional if you recall and is now one of the most consistent defenders in the best league in the world. That says much about him. It is those fighting qualities that he takes onto the field with him every time he plays and his natural leadership qualities are there for all to see. All qualities which help him become a great captain in fact.

As for ducking under parapets? As I said dont be so silly mun. Get a grip.

So from this, I take it you don't agree with my opinion?

His ability is not (necessarily) in question. Has come on leaps and bounds.

Can I suggest you look at him in a game and see how much he rallies the troops especially when we are flagging. He can go missing as a leader.

I have a firm grip thank-you, but thanks for the advice.

Sorry to tell you that you are talking out of that small hole in your rear end

My previous comments all show how determined an individual he is. That desire to succeed is always evident and it's something that helps him become a great leader of men on the pitch. He is one player that will not duck out of anything, much like Monk. it's why the two of them formed such a formidable partnership. He leads by example and that's one quality needed from a good captain. Would you want him on your side in the trenches? Of course you would.

As for rallying troops when we are flagging, watch the next game with your eyes wide open instead of closed. Re-watch the last two games v Arsenal and Belgium for starters. With eyes open.

Swancity is absolutely bang on in this thread. The myth that Williams isn't a leader has been perpetuated by a minority of fans who, for some bizarre reason, don't like him as a person due to his irrelevant musings on twitter or his body language.

Mind you these are the kind of people, like Dr. Winston O'Boogie-Woogie, who genuinely thought Jose Manuel Flores was a better defender than Ash and believed Jose Canas to be the next coming of Claude Makelele. Eejits.

Do you see when watching on the Internet the amount of times Williams loses it?

At times, Garry was a better leader on the pitch, than he was a player.

Ash will always be a better player, than a leader.
