Bobby Zamora, until the last two months, has been bloody dreadful for us. Robert Green was fcking awful until this season. Likewise Barton. And even if you do want to play the happy clappy game, for every one Clint Hill or Shaun Derry we've signed at least three others along the lines of Park, Johnson and Zamora who looked past it when they arrived and were indeed well past it when they got here. Sometimes if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck it's a duck. Hangelaand looks like a slow, injury prone, ageing player with big fitness problems and his best days long behind him.

After he was subbed vs Liverpool Barton actually played quite well until the sending off vs citeh. Rob green was poor in pre season (I was there and sober for preseason in Germany too) but didn't really get a chance last season. BZ been monumentally shit or injured until 5 weeks ago and even then only played a total of 3 games in pitch time ( one swallow and all that)

After being subbed v Liverpool, and before he let us down against Man City, Barton only played six times. Rob Green played 19 times in his first season with us and conceded some shambolic goals - Villa H, West Brom H, Newcastle H.

So you obviously think, all these younger players, that you haven't mentioned, would have done better, rather than the OAP's we have, that got us promoted ? Talk is cheap and that's all it is, I prefer to see what's happened and we are in the Premiership and that's a fact.

No I think if we hadn't gone out and signed Park, Zamora, Johnson etc etc etc then we wouldn't have been relegated from the premier League in the first place and I think if we go out and sign players of a similar calibre again this time then exactly the same thing will happen. I prefer to see what's happened as well. I saw 34 of 36 matches last time we were in the Premier League. We won four of them. That's also a fact.

All I'm going to say is, I think Redknapp has more savvy about him, than Hughes, that's it. Redknapp has signed some decent younger players for us, so I hope with experience as well, he can keep us in the Premiership. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I hope so too. Like I said at the start, the Mail is notoriously sht and Dave Mc says we're not after Hangelaand so hopefully it's a non-starter. I like the Ashley Williams rumours, I think he'd be fantastic for us and just what we need. Him and Ned together is strong, atheltic, good ages for centre backs, good in the air, good on the ground. That would be an excellent base to build from.

If we sign anyone over 30 - offer them a one year contact for 5k max then we'll see if they want to play for QPR or are in it just for the money !

I don't think the issue with Hangeland is his mentality. He doesn't seem the mercenary type at all. It's more the fact he was part of a team that conceded 85 goals last season, is almost 33, isn't the player he was 2/3 years ago and has struggled with injuries over the last year. With the rumours of Hangeland, Olsson and to a lesser extent Williams, I feel like we should be signing the equivalent of these players when they first moved to England/their current clubs. Olsson was signed for less than £1m when he was 25, Hangeland probably around the same fee when he was 27. We should be making these signings, ones that require scouting and go beyond current premier league players in their 30s.

I completely agree with you, but the problem is that some of these talents would be very raw, and getting used to the PL may take a while. Think Mbia, and Diakite, they are both physically talented, but just dont seem to have their head screwed on at times. If a CB has the same quality, then it could cost us a lot of goals. I would like to see us try and bring in a young player who is not getting minutes at a big club. Illori, Bartra would do nicely on loan. Alternatively go buy smalling. He clearly is not a champions league CB, but is good enough for us. The same could be said for the midfield too, whilst a lot of people dont like the loan system, it can be hugely advantageous if we dont have lots of money to spend. Moses, Sergi Roberto, Jese, Montoya, Marin, Casimero. Are all top players who wont be starters for their clubs. A chance to bring in some top players for a season should not be ignored, and could have the same effect as Deulofeu. Yes it doesnt help us going forward, but neither would Hangeland, Cole or Olsson.

RE: the first paragraph. I think the key in what you say is that SOME of these talents will be very raw. I think it's all a case of scouting, and getting the right types of players. Mbia is undoubtedly a good player, he was just played in the wrong position and arguably asked to do too much. He's never going be consistently good as a CM in 442. He was exceptional at RB against United and had the odd excellent game at Cb and in defensive midfield. With someone like Hangeland, he joined mid-season and was instrumental in helping them stay up. I don't think it's impossible that relative unknowns can join and make an immediate impact. And even if they don't, we should stick by them and they may well come good. I just hope we don't have a Cesar/Green scenario again. I really agree about loans from big clubs. The players will have something to prove. Bartra is probably out of our reach, with Puyol retiring, I think he'll play even more regularly than last season (20 games.) Like the shout of Sergi Roberto, or maybe someone like Chalobah or Omeruo from Chelsea.
Defender inbound ... on 16:06 - Jun 8 with 1939 views | derbyhoop | At what point did £50k per week become the going rate for a very poor 32 year old who was part of the worst defence in the Premiership. Average wage in the Pl was £35k and even that figure was distorted by man utd, Chelsea and Man City. The latter were paying 100k per player. That makes the going rate for everyone else 20-30k.

Defender inbound ... on 08:41 - Jun 9 with 1592 views | Konk | Brede Hangeland comes across as someone that I would very happily go on holiday with, share a flat with or introduce to my sister (if I had one), but as a footballer, he’s been in serious decline for a couple of years. At his best, he was brilliant and I think the under-rated Aaron Hughes was the perfect partner for him and possibly made him look better than he might actually have been. However, since his injury problems, he’s immobile, wins almost nothing in the air and contributed as much as anyone last year to our catastrophic defending. As some have pointed out, he was so bad at your place last time that some people genuinely wondered if he’d taken a bribe. I hope that whatever he does, it works out for him because he seems like a lovely bloke, but sadly I don’t think he’s PL standard any more. On the topic of Sidwell that popped up on another thread, he was probably our player of the season, but that in itself explains how we came to be relegated. In an ideal world he would have been 4th choice for CM as he had been previously in his time at Fulham. A good worker, a decent eye for goal, but no real ability to pick a pass, no great defensive discipline and a tendency to give away stupid free-kicks in dangerous areas. [Post edited 9 Jun 2014 8:50]

Konk, we appreciate your input but I seem to recall the Fulham fans saying similar things about AJ& BZ in an attempt to dissuade us from signing your star players, and that turned out OK if I recall correctly........ Oh hang on a minute Well Bobby got the idea when he had 3 weeks left on his contract

Then he was outstanding. He has struggled with injury over the past 2 seasons and looks like he has lost his pace. We need someone younger, faster and fitter at centre back to partner Chief imo. |
