| News Comment | Southampton V Hull City The Verdict at 17:01:03
Agree with what you said Nick, only adding that a major factor in our miss passing was that Hull were buzzing round us as soon as we got the ball, preventing us from playing our usual game. Unfortunately, we failed to do the same to them. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Swansea City The Verdict at 23:36:35
A good result, but in the last thirty minutes we lost the plot and watching the clock slowly tick down was like watching too many games of the past few seasons, nail biting.Still, RM must realise by now that bar injury, good CBs stay together till the whistle blows for the the ninety minutes and are never subbed, except for injury. |
| News Comment | Russell Martin Has To Get Defence Right For Crucial Leicester Game at 12:06:06
It's all very well playing procession football, but you can't keep playing it back to the defence. Forward players are making runs forward, but players who receive the ball already have their backs to them and are playing the ball back to a defender. In the end frustration wins and forwards don't bother just join in playing tips tappy football. A team that has the most possession, but loses 5-0 has not got the right system of playing. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Norwich City The Verdict at 11:22:08
This was a game that I loved. Full blooded loads of shots on goal, each side wanting to win, great vocal support from everywhere in the ground. Our defense has to be better organised and a defending midfielder bought. But it was the player's fighting spirit the impressed me most. We were behind three times but came back each time and were pressing for win right up to the final whistle. As an aside, I wonder what odds one would have got for a double on successive 4-4 draws? |
| News Comment | Southampton At Sheffield Wednesday The Verdict at 12:27:16
Quick crisp accurate passing stopped SW getting any rhythm going. I wasn't happy reading that we were playing procession football this season as we had tried it in pass seasons, but this was something else. Let's hope that we contue in this vein for the rest of the season. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Bournemouth The Verdict at 11:36:40
Well that is that. A chance to start to get out of trouble and we blow.it with a typical repeat performance that we have seen so many times over the past seasons. The team lacks so many things. Leadership, spirit, pedestrian build ups a half decent striker etc etc. This performance I have seen so many times. The problem is the manager. RH,Jones and now Sellars were and are uninspiring. To win games games and be successful, we need a young hungry for success manager who is willing to take chances to get us out of the mess we are in, because if we think the Premiership is hard, to stay in, the Championship is far harder to get out of. |
| News Comment | Could Lyanco Be The Leader At The Back Southampton Need at 10:02:15
He could be, judging from his performance on Saturday that he is someone who could really organise the defense. That said, we will have the usual teams sniffing round by next January if he is as good as we hope he is. |
| News Comment | Saints Sign Keeper On One Month Contract at 13:26:59
Could be a good move. Willy Cabello was signed by both Manchester City and Chelsea. He was always in the wings, but those two teams can afford to keep a good keeper on the bench. Could be a good buy. We shall see. He could not be as bad as MaCarthy has been. |
| News Comment | On This Day In History - 6th April 1976 A Local Derby at 15:31:12
A very rare league win away for Saints that season in which we were so good at the Dell and so bad away. Had we had the same away form as Portsmouth in 75/76 not only would we have won the FA Cup, we would have also been promoted to the First Division as Champions. |
| News Comment | Saints V Newcastle United The Verdict at 13:13:35
The inclusion of Valery at full back was a strange decision. I take it that none of Saints backroom staff watched Newcastle mid week and noticed Saint-Maximin had a cracking game. Putting a young, lightweight player who had not played first team football since last year up against such a strong winger was asking for trouble. JWP should have been at full back with Valery in right mid field where it seems he always plays better . Late on we were lucky not to concede another goal with an almost the identical situation between the two players that had led to the goal. I also think it is a bit harsh to come down on the CBs (again). I thought they did a good job keeping Newcastle at bay in the second half and we could have nicked a win if our forwards could do a bit better in front of goal. |
| News Comment | Saints At Liverpool The Verdict at 13:38:46
A bit harsh on our CBs. Liverpool attacked with real pace and were getting numbers in the box in the second half. No other team in the Premiership could have done any better than Saints against the World Team Champions. That said, we gave them a real game in the first half and had we got a penalty for the trip on Ings two minutes into the second, who knows was might have happened? Certainly not the first Liverpool goal. The way we have been playing for the last couple of months and the way we matched Liverpool for much of the game means we can look forward to the rest of the season with real optimism for the first time in three seasons, knowing that in the remaining fixtures, we are capable of winning them all. It was also a nice gesture from the Liverpool fans to applaud Danny Ings when he was substituted. Whether it was relief from not having an ex player score against them or a genuine regard for him, I don't know. |
| News Comment | Saints At Crystal Palace The Verdict at 01:58:30
A really good result, especially only three days after the Wolves game. It does show that we now have a team that can come back strongly from a setback. The stats say it all. We had most of the possession and Palace didn't have a shot on target, nor did they win a corner. If only our home form was as good as our away form, we would be sitting in 5th place today. Conversely, if the reverse was true, we would be well and truly in the relegation zone. |
| News Comment | Hasenhuttl Admits There Is No Need To Panic Buy Now ! at 12:22:00
I think the phrase "no panic buying" is the most relevant. The last couple of seasons there have been transfers in during January that have left us with bigger wage bill and nothing on the field to show for it. Leicester are rumoured to be after Bertrand so perhaps that is why RH only seems concerned with cover for that position. . |
| News Comment | Legendary Saints Goalscorer George O'Brien Is Still With Us at 13:30:11
A great player who I had the pleasure of watching many times in the 60s. It was also the era when players were far more approachable than they are now and like many of his team mates, George O'Brien signed my programme as he was making his way into the Dell before a match. |
| News Comment | Will Saints Spend £35 Million In January Transfer Window ? at 15:35:24
I agree that defence is not now such a priority. 20 million wasted on yet another CB does not get me excited. A decent left/ right back and cover for PH and JWP in midfield is as far as I'd go. Our two CBs now are gaining in confidence and playing together well. Why buy another CB who will need time to bed in and whose introduction to an established team could be disastrous as many teams have found out to their cost in the past. |
| News Comment | No Class Mourinho at 13:10:26
Today's BBC football website says it all. Mourinho, Mourinho, Mourinho. Not a word about Saints. I'm just glad that the board kept faith with RH after Leicester and not replace him with JM. We would probably now be be propping up the Premiership. As it is, hopefully we will be pass Spurs on the way up as they go down the table. |
| News Comment | Saints V Tottenham Hotspur The Verdict at 02:24:23
Brilliant win though I agree Jack Stephens also deserved the the plaudits for the goal with a peach of a pass. Our form over the Christmas period is the best in the Premiership except for our ex players on the Mersey. Based on this performance, we can do really well this season, a season which up to only a few games ago looked like being another dog fight for Premiership survival. My only gripe, we played well enough to have at least a couple more goals. |
