MLS new season
at 20:46 20 Feb 2025

I've never really felt any attachment to the MLS Whitecaps. I go to about one game a season, if that. The NASL version was a different animal. Good young players — including Bruce Grobbelaar and Peter Beardsley — and oldies Rudi Krol and Phil Parkes (Wolves version.) Really big crowds, 50,000+ for playoff games. Back then there was almost no European or British soccer on TV, so you could really get behind the Caps. These days there's no real identity. Players come and go with barely a whisper. There's little passion at games, except the Cascadia derbies with Seattle and Portland. Away fans travel in numbers for those as there's history going back decades. The MLS works financially I guess, in a way the NASL didn't, but for the most part it's thin gruel.

That last foul on Lloyd looked intentional, more red than yellow for sure.

Madsen needs minutes in the attempt to play his way into this league. A four goal lead gives him a cushion to do that... hopefully.

Our back line is looking as shaky as it did on Tuesday. Bit worrying.

Shhh! A two goal lead can be the most dangerous

It was. Saito could have just lashed instead of taking a touch around the keeper.

We're all over the shop tonight. Frey was at left back just then.

No QPR match is ever a lock. Particularly for the team in hoops.

I'm loathe to call out individuals as we were unable to, or prevented from, organising any co-ordinated pressure in their end. Chair, Saito and Smyth never pressed as a unit as they had against Blackburn. Consequently Frey, who essentially is an "inside the box" striker, had very little to work with. Similarly our back line and DMs never seemed as comfortable as they did last week. In short it was a team loss. We need to learn from it.

Agreed. We looked shaky and indecisive all night at the back.
