Frey Goal
at 07:36 7 Jan 2025

Handball was unintentional, which apparently doesn't matter but it also caused the ball to fly up when it might have been easier if it hadn't.

As for a foul on the defender, I didn't think so, but you do expect the ref to favour the defender. He was consistent on that allowing Morris to hold down Dunne when heading at the back post, luckily Nardi saved.

Rs Vs Lootown Hatters Match Thread

I thought some of the comments about Edwards post match were a bit much. Gaz and Jamie saying he's proven his a top manager because he got them promoted. But that was mainly Nathan Jones who built that team. They used to be really hard to beat but under Edwards they seem to have got a lot easier to play against.

I think they did at least point out that even though the stats for the game were even, Luton only looked dangerous from set pieces. Given the squad at their disposal, that's quite poor.

Yeah I thought that too, read the situation well I think.

Would have liked him to score one of those chances. He put in a lot of hard work and think his decision making was good with the chances he had, just execution was off.

It's definitely going to be a difficult game.

I'd possibly go with Ashby, Dunne, Edwards and Paal at the back, then if necessary bring on Fox and JCS to rest Dunne and Paal. Don't want to overdo Fox or JCS given their injury issues.

I would imagine that Smyth is knackered given his work rate and number of games but if he's good to go tonight I'd keep him in. Same for Morgan.

Pretty much what I was going to say. I find it very unlikely he'll leave Palace for a while.

I think chair is still getting up to speed but flashes of the old player coming through. My main concern was that he seems to drift inside and leave Paal isolated 2-1 sometimes. Saito may off more protection down the left.

I think Frey has been good and having Kolli to come on if/when he tires is a bonus.

Perhaps biased but I think the free kick was probably just about right. As you say 6 of one half a dozen of the other when challenging for the ball, their player has his shirt the whole time. Then when the ball then passes behind, their player stops Frey illegally.

Marti (still) 'very happy' with his squad
at 12:20 27 Dec 2024

What exactly do you expect him to say? You've brought it up before and when I've said that he can't really say anything else when he has to manage them and you accused him of lying but you're happy to accept spin from Nourry:

"I read his address and found it well-written, informative and reasonably reflective while maintaining the mostly positive 'spin' one would expect from any official statement of this kind"

So what exactly do you expect a manager to say about a squad he's going to have to work with. You also don't like him alluding to things regarding injuries but again if you're speaking publicly it's best to keep the details in house.

Imagine both fox and JCS will struggle. I can see field dropping in to CB and Madsen will come on with Morgan dropping back next to Varane. Also Ashby as you say coming on to RB and Dunne going into CB. Bit of a mess.

The King's speech?

Not sure what to make of this. On the one hand it's positive that he listens to fans and adapts his approach. But it's still concerning that he needs simple stuff pointing out in the first place. Not sure what other situation that would be tolerated.

He's defended his position on the LB situation and it's essentially - we thought a LB who was injured most of last season and a 35 year old CM would be sufficient. Not sure which one of those two could cope with Ben Doaks pace. On the face of it, looks like a poor plan that inevitably went wrong and he still seems in denial of that.

I still think he needs a DoF alongside him if this is going to work.

Got to love Jimmy, great article on him.

If we do find a more natural right back, I think he'll be a great leader at CB to replace Cook.

Another muscular injury today for Cook this time. Head of performance allowed to phone it in from Dubai. Yeah, Nourry out.

Pub Landlord being sued by Terrorist
at 19:56 18 Dec 2024

As others have said, complete chancer.

Bit confused how he's going to use this to sue other pubs. Is he doing a tour of places that he thinks are racist? Or are they offending him despite him not being anywhere near them?

Doesn't his admission that he intends to sue more pubs that are nowhere near him confirm he's only in it for the money?

End of an Era?

Yeah, after the Norwich game you could get into the park but not out onto the road by television studios. You'd think that they could add some lighting and keep it open and hour or so later on match days to help the crowds disperse.

Angus Gunn charged by FA
at 22:45 17 Dec 2024

I thought Gunn was a bit of an embarrassment with his dive to try and get Kolli in trouble. Don't know what he did in the tunnel but the whole team had clearly lost their heads.

After the McLean suspension the manager came out with a load of tosh about retrospective punishments being a new thing invented for Norwich, so you can see who their enabler is. It's embarrassing given the resources they have available to them and we're forced to play Kolli and Morgan who they decided to deal with by hitting them and diving.

McLean suspended for 4 matches
at 19:26 12 Dec 2024

I can't believe your manager doesn't know that if an incident is missed by the referee and not punished then they will review it after the game. If he'd have booked him, it wouldn't have been reviewed even if it should have been a red. Think the rules have been like that for years.

Referee probably has it in his notes that Morgan claimed he'd been hit in the head, so that's why they reviewed it.

The timing I agree is poor but I imagine the club knew about it earlier if they appealed it. So might be worth clarifying when the initial decision was made. The club should have been aware sooner and planned for the appeal failing.

I don't know anything about your manager but the teams mentality Saturday and his comments on this suggests his trying to create an "us against the world" attitude with the team, which given the resources at his disposal seems odd. That said it worked well for Neil Warnock at various clubs back in the day.

Last night’s ref
at 14:02 12 Dec 2024

On top of the other items mentioned I thought it was poor to give the shanked shot as a corner in the first half, it went nowhere near our players and could have resulted in a goal.

I'm not sure how he managed to not book their player who fell over and grabbed the ball either.

Seemed to make judgements about what is and isn't a booking based on whether your team was winning or not rather than the offense.

Varanne
at 09:53 12 Dec 2024

At times last night it felt like he was the more developed kid dominating a youth game. Seemed to be nobody on the Oxford team who could match his physicality but he was controlled with it too.

After the second goal I noticed Cook had a quick word to refocus him, feel like the defensive unit (including Varane) take pride in clean sheets, which is good to see.

Sam Field or no Sam Field?

I was going to say that he reads danger really well, showed that against Watford with some great interceptions. But he also showed last night that when the opposition is weaker and we're on the front foot he can be an asset in attack as well.

I know he scored 2 goals but my favourite moment from him was just after Morgans shot he followed in looking for his third goal. He challenged for the ball in the box, shoulder to shoulder and sent the defender off the pitch while retaining the ball. Great strength.

From where I was sitting it looked like some of the decisions he gave our way were due to prompting from the lino rather than his own judgement but I could be wrong.
