Transfer rumours 2024
at 16:07 5 Aug 2024

Miller is predominantly right-footed but unlike many footballers of today, he is also very comfortable and adept in using his left foot. He would be my preferred option, but suspect that there's nothing in the Bowler rumour.

Totally agree. He has been poorly advised and I believe under the MC, he would have got better. Not to the levels pre his injuries but more than good enough for the championship.

Football is a great game and it's all about opinions/different views.

I hope a creative player or two arrives before the window closes, as I think we have a useful squad in place otherwise.

Keep the faith. Up the R's.

So wrong re: Willock. For a player deemed by some as having a "poor attitude" and being "half-ar*ed", his contribution as back-up to Chair from November '23 in our staying up, cannot be downplayed. He was nowhere near the levels prior to his injuries, but contribute he did.

We beat Hull at home because of Willock. One goal, which only a player of his ilk could score, alongside his assist. Likewise against Rotherham, a match which we were losing until he scored and his assist for Smyth to score. We could have lost both games without his interventions, which could have had us relegated.

Other assists include the first goal scored against Millwall in a tight game where our second goal came in injury time, and his assist for the second goal scored by Andersen v Leeds before half-time also contributed to victories, in games we needed to win.

Unsurprisingly, Chair only had one assist when Gazza the great was at the helm and no goals, as he was largely a bystander.

Factor in the following: gulf in quality of strikers at our club last season compared to my reference point: Leicester; with better strikers, the assists from both would have been higher, as they both put balls in telling areas; nearly a third of the season being wasted with a manager whose style of play meant Chair's input was peripheral at best and Willock only started three games. Leicester, the best in the league, in contrast had a settled playing system for the entire season that brought the best out of their attacking midfield players; the season for both Chair and Willock essentially only started when the MC took over and viewed them both as being integral to our chances of avoiding the drop.

Their contributions compare very favourably to others in the league last season. Chair's are hugely impressive. Not bad for a player whose "failings" include not looking up, doesn't deliver early/correctly, hogs the ball etc. Whilst a "non-contributing" Willock scored one goal fewer than Dykes from the time when the MC was appointed.

Chair: 7 goals and 8 assists. Dewsbury-Hall: 12 goals and 15 assists

Willock: 4 goals and 4 assists. Mavidi: 13 goals and 6 assists; Fatawu: 7 goals and 13 assists.

In Chair's absence and the now departed Willock, last week against mediocre Reading, we looked devoid of any creativity. I hope that isn't a portent for the new season and that our other creative player, Andersen, will continue to contribute with assists whilst adding more goals to his game.

Thank you Chris Willock, you weren't at your best, but you still contributed to the Rangers' cause, which was to avoid relegation.

Shame that, as Sorba Thomas is the kind of player I thought we might be interested in. He's not perfect but is still a huge upgrade on Smyth, as he can actually play on both flanks, had 9 assists and scored 4 goals for relegated Huddersfield, physically stronger and is championship hardened.

I suspect that it is unlikely that any of the alternatives that may/will be signed between now and close of transfer window, will be championship ready and may take time to adjust.

I would not be surprised if he's sent out on loan by Bristol City until at least January.

Any chance of our getting Conway in return, he's the same age as Armstrong but offers so much more in my opinion and is in the final year of his contract. Wishful thinking, I know.

If the rumours about our interest are to believed, it would appear that he only started in five games for Gijon, Spanish 2nd tier, out of the 22 in which he was included in the match day squad. Mooted offer tabled by us of 1.2m euros! Not believing that.

Totally agree. Were he to be sold, he will be missed for consistency in his performances and durability. He won't be easy to replace. At present, neither Fox nor Larkeche are at his level in my view.

That person is many things but he's not short of money. The ridiculous wages we paid him during his time at our club: purportedly nearly £80k per week, has gone a long way to ensuring that.

Him and others from that era are the root cause why the club has been in such financial straits ever since.

Announce Steve Cook as the new captain, please.

If the figures that have been mentioned re: Begovic's wages are true, then they can now be better utilised too.

Wish him all the best, but glad that there will be no second season.

Potential update on Illias Chair...
at 11:49 20 Jun 2024

Totally agree.

To think that there was a post a while back on Ivan Toney's gambling addiction! and how oblivious Brentford as a club and its supporters appeared to be of his transgressions by still hero-worshipping him after he had served his suspension.

That will be the same Sunderland that finished on the same number of points as us and will in all likelihood be significantly weakened next season should Jack Clarke leave! Nonsense. He's not going there.

Pre season fixtures

Me too (Willy fan).

Yes. if we were still wedded to GA's hoofball, neither of those sides would entertain playing us, even if we had managed to remain in the championship playing in that manner.

Pre season fixtures

Absolutely. Already a far cry from the sham of games that included Reading's youth team and a part-time Austrian regional side. AFC Wimbledon was one of the sterner tests last pre-season.

End of Term 23/24 – Attack
at 20:49 27 May 2024

So in Les' supposed fallow years, from 1989 as an inexperienced striker, he scored 22 goals in just 55 games!! All achieved at the highest level, I might add.

There's no comparison, either in the near future or way into the future.

And Kent scored 1,072 runs against us. A valid case could be made that the key point of difference between the two sides was the runs scored by Jordan Cox in both games, a player who was made in Kent.

Yes, we've won four matches, but three of those victories were against the bottom two sides in the league, and we only beat Warwickshire because they, inexplicably in my view, didn't enforce the follow-on.

The prognosis on Sam Cook's injury is yet to be determined, but the whispers at Canterbury amongst Essex fans, was that he has a hamstring injury. One can only hope that it isn't long-term because if Aaron Beard is his replacement, then we will not keep pace with Slurrey. Likewise, if Cook is selected in the England squad, thus potentially missing games at the end of August and the first game in September.

Personally hope all the "smaller" sides: Kent, Somerset, Worcestershire and Essex all stay up, and if it's at the expense of Lancashire, Warwickshire and/or Nottinghamshire even better. I wish Kent all the best against Lancashire when we revert to the proper game from 23rd June for two more rounds of fixtures..

I sincerely hope Palace don't sell any of their stellar players. In that group, I would also include their two excellent centre-halves: Andersen and Guehi. They also have Cheick Doucoure to come back from injury.

Their fans deserve a season of seeing their side replete with top-drawer premier league quality after many years of struggling and being saved from liquidation.

They've just picked up over £34 million for a 10th placed finish and already sold their season tickets' allocation for next season. They really don't need to sell unless they receive ridiculous offers
