Halifax match thread on 09:59 - Oct 23 with 3811 views | NorthernDale | I will give credit to Halifax, they dominated the game and overpowered us at times, but our defence fought with passion to keep them out. One thing I did notice, was that they played with pace, whereas we seemed at times slow, this allows the opposition teams to get organised. I thought Gordon's movement for his goal was good to watch, he started on the edge of the box and ghosted in behind their defence. Again, it was the same with Allarakhia movement and the nice pass of the ball into the box, which allowed McBride to head in. I was worried that McBride and Buyabu seem to go off with knocks, hopefully nothing serious.

Although he didn't sparkle too much going forward his overall play was one of our key factors in grinding out that victory. He used his fast pace in defensive situations to get us out of the merde. He has bundles of energy and strength giving him more tenacity than anyone on the pitch. He was up for the fight and without him last night we would have lost...I know you can say that about others, but I just didn't see his name mentioned yet. On an initial one month loan...get him signed up for the rest of the season Jim !!!! [Post edited 23 Oct 10:16]

Halifax match thread on 23:59 - Oct 22 by _Windydale | Fantastic win, Halfiax's game plan to pressurize and boss the game worked . They looked like the home team first half thankfully weathered the storm. Thought we could have done better in midfield getting the ball wide or through to the front men.. We've enough skill in the team, but needed a bit of brawn, Burger, can't fault his tenacity, not a liam kelly, first touch sometimes lets him down and cautious passing frustrated while in our half. Although further up the pitch hes a quick thinker and contributes to good link up play. In atttack I would like to see Mcbride do more abit more and without the ball, a passenger, would like to see him not stand of his man all the time. Allarakhia is my favourite player at the moment, the dangerous runs are exciting and that pass to Mcbride(edit) for his goal, was great. Kyron Gordon deserved man of the match, a good fighter and not a sulker. Hendersons jumping on top for his celebrations was abit x-rated but the lads were clearly happy taking the lead. Halifax match thread on 08:38 - Oct 23 by TalkingSutty | Regarding the tactics employed in most home games i agree, far too slow, walking out with the ball at the back and instinctively looking to pass sideways and backwards rather than the quick forward option. Last night was different, we showed true grit and battling qualities, it was a great effort by the players. I'm not sure McNulty knows how to change our approach to home games ,or even if he wants to do, but I'm pretty certain he has the players in the squad to employ a much more offensive style if he ever decided to do. A 2300 home crowd in what is a local derby is poor, free flowing, exciting, attacking football is something potential fans know they aren't going to see at the COA so we are left with the same loyal hard core unfortunately. McNulty prefers the tactical challenge to the blood and thunder, get in their faces and put the ball into the box option and although it doesn't get the juices going we are in a play off position. If all managers should be judged on results then McNulty is doing well, i think he's done more than a decent job since he took over nearly 18 months ago. I'm not enamoured with our home performances though, i nearly always leave the ground feeling as though we are capable of producing far more than what i have just witnessed. That's not going to change, the style of his team is a reflection of himself..neat and tidy, very pleasant and nice. I once had a girlfriend like that, lovely girl but i got bored. You want some devilment dont you? Especially at home. [Post edited 23 Oct 9:17]

There is a player in there and he does work hard. What really impressed me was when he switched over to the right in an effort to nullify Oluwabori who was a real handful all game, he stuck to hsi defensive duties, which is probably something he does not enjoy as much as going forward. He was knackered when he went off. Burger also had a really good game, I like the way he looked to run with the ball in central areas, almost in a way we have not seen since Oli Rathbone. He is definitely improving and looks better in that central role, which he has almost been forced into due to injuries. You could say that last night was the best victory of the season. Halifax dominated for the first 30 minutes, Robson made a cracking save, which you could argue was the catalyst for an improved last 60 minutes. We defended pretty well, bar their goal and the player's heads did not go down when they scored. The second goal was a lovely one. Injuries have started to bite but we are in a decent position and hopefully in a few weeks we will start to get some players back. If we are in a decent position in January will the owners splash the cash to bring in a couple of quality players?

It's a good question, a roll of the dice to give us extra momentum going into the business end of the season..a Cian Hayes type character perhaps? As i mentioned before, its not even a financial gamble if you are theoretically bringing forward a portion of next Summers recruitment by six months and hopefully putting those players on a two year contract. Any new signings have to be equal or better players than what we currently have, that's the whole point of the three year plan, if they become available to sign at any specific time of the year then i think the owners and the manager need to be prepared to pounce. I'm not talking young loan players, squad fillers. The Ogden family might not be football people but they understand finance and the advantages of achieving our goal in a shorter time scale. Even recruiting good players earlier than planned could bear fruit when it comes to sell on value in the transfer market. Achieving promotion in either years one or two will be a massive financial boost to the club and we've as much chance of achieving that this season as any other club currently sitting in the top seven places. Having a restricted budget in years one and two doesn't make much sense really, even more so when you look at the current squad. I would suggest the recruitment has been so good over the summer ( better than expected) we should now be looking at reducing that three year plan to two and actively looking for another four or so quality signings to take us to the next level as soon as possible. The ogdens have pledged that investment anyway, let's get ambitious and do it quicker with a view to accessing the extra finances that a return to the EFL brings. Does this bring pressure and raise expectation levels, of course it does but that goes hand in hand with success, it also makes the public sit up and take note, attracts sponsorship, increases corporate spending and also matchday attendances. So looking at the quality of the current squad, do we still need a three year plan, which will theoretically water down the budget over that length of time? Or would a two year plan now be more appropriate and the three year budget can be used over a shorter time scale, giving us a better chance of accessing the extra funding that the EFL brings. #gambleaware [Post edited 23 Oct 12:43]

Agree with this, a 3 year plan shouldn’t be set in stone & if we are top 6/7 in Jan & not adrift of the top 3 we should go for promotion all guns blazing. It’s a bang average league this season IMO & I think that fans realise this, hence their reaction (partly anyway) last sat & at some other home games. No one knows what the future holds, we could be saddled with a Wrexham mark 2 next season & rue a missed opportunity.

Yeah, it was much more enjoyable than Saturday. The players were much more positive when we did have the ball - Ryan East’s performance illustrating how individual decision making and making the most of what they’re good at is the biggest factor in how games play out at home at the moment last night he looked forward, on Saturday he played facing his own goal far too much. . Much more positive by the manager too with his change in tactics/personnel in the second half.

Forest Green could be that outstanding team. Not saying they will be but they’re on a real run now and have a lot of quality, especially in the forward area. One thing we do need to be wary of is not chucking money at chasing a dream unless it fits agreed budgets and wage structures. Break that once and word gets around the game and we’ll be paying a ‘Rochdale premium’ whenever we show interest in a player. Not suggesting anyone is saying we should, but we all know the perils and lack of real achievement in spending for spendings sake as seen locally.

Agreed. Expect the budget for the turn of the year will have been set, perhaps during the summer. I see no need to spend beyond that, and that's very much the model the Ogden's specified when taking control of our financial structure If that includes the possibility of spending say, £100k on a proven striker, all well and good but if that doesn't happen the very last thing i want to hear is a moan about "lack of ambition" What's more likely to happen is the addition of two or three players who might improve us, and that's what the majority of clubs will be looking to do. Given the signings JM has made, there's reason to be optimistic on that score, even as he seriously needs to revise his ideas about how to get a consistent tune out of decent players. Missing so many opportunities to attract more people through the gates at home means the budget he's got to play with won't be increasing any time soon [Post edited 23 Oct 13:59]

Video of the whole move for the winner. Perfect example of how, if the players choose to look forward with passing and runs, of how effective our playing style can be. The understandable frustration occurs when we don’t do this, but there’s no doubt we want to and have to try and avoid getting stuck going nowhere slowly. We’ve certainly seen the another side to the squad though, one which can grind out results in games that are a decent watch even if the opposition are on top.

When we played Forest Green, I was not impressed by them, but they have clearly improved since then. The aim of the Ogden's was that the Dale should at least qualify for the playoffs this season and we are capable of that. If we can get into the playoffs, then it is all to play for, it is down to a three game final, in that we could finish seventh and win promotion.

I never get statements like "When we played Forest Green, I was not impressed by them". We have only seen them once; they're clearly good enough to be top from all their other games. Some Fax fans on Twitter were asking how we are fourth. Probably because as a collective, rather than on a single 90 minutes viewing, that's where we deserve to be.

The whole team won the game for us, a great shift by everybody involved. At Barnet we are going to have to play with energy to match them, if we don't they will over run us. That's how they play at home and they will have a high press so we can't be dilly dallying on the ball. [Post edited 23 Oct 18:14]

Halifax match thread on 19:05 - Oct 23 with 2220 views | 49thseason | I think some people are forgetting, we are in the early stages of a plan which has two distinct strands, but those strands are interconnected. My sense is that the development of the Community hub is a priority with some redevelopment of the main stand area which will help to improve the playing side and and the hospitality options and these developments, over the following 3-4 years would help the club to become financially sustainable. There is no excuse for betting the farm on an early promotion push, especially if that were to result in an immediate relegation. For the first time in living memory we have a plan, we have financial backers who have developed this plan and they know it will take time to make it work. The prize is still over 3 years away. Yes there is money from the EFL but remember, everyone gets that money and the costs of running club increases as a result ie wages increase, police bills, transfer fees, Increasing the average attendance needs a period of consolidation at the top of this division and home form has to be a priority to achieve bigger gates.Money has been allocated, but as I keep saying, progress has to to be couched in terms of consistency of purpose, sticking to the plan and making incrementsl improvements. It took Wrexham and Stockport lots of cash to storm through this division and onwards, you need juice in the tank and we are not there yet... This team is better than last season's, next season's will be better than this one and as the crowds improve and the off- pitch developments kick in we will have the wherewithall to be competitive at a higher level. We'll be knackered if we get promotion this season then🤣. Of course there's a plan and it's a good one but as far as the Ogden family go it might not be set in stone if they think there's a decent chance of reaching the EFL earlier. It's not just the extra finance it will generate but also the opportunity to kick start the academy sooner. I don't think anybody is forgetting we are at the early stages of the plan, it's just trying to second guess what could be a option that the Ogdens might consider, merely speculation that football fans talk about on a forum or in the bar. It's the Ogdens money and they will do with the club as they feel fit, I'm fine with that, they might even increase it to a five year plan at some point. You can't pick and choose when you want to get promoted you have to seize the opportunity when it presents itself..somebody on this forum once said it was too early for us to get promoted to the Championship, like we could pick and choose after 100 years of never getting there.
Halifax match thread on 19:36 - Oct 23 with 2110 views | jonahwhereru | We deserved a draw on Saturday, only because Southend were equally poor. We truely only deserved a point last night on the balance of play, but ended up winning. So three points rather than a deserved two over both games. Overall a positive outcome. Have to agree that the foot on the ball stuff in and around our own area is an accident waiting to happen, again. It kills the atmosphere, and long term will only be tolerated by the majority of supporters if we win. There is so much about Jim that exudes a manager of men, who gets people playing for him / the fans. The after match celebrations last night demonstrated that. But we have two forwards who like the ball played in front of them at pace. He needs to set his team up to play to its strengths more often, especially at home. The more he does that the more engaged the supporters will be. UTD

We didn't deserve a point against Southend, they did exactly what they needed to do and in the second half just protected their lead, it was easy for them. Had they needed to go looking for another goal they would have been more offensive and probably scored again. I wouldn't say Southend were poor, that was us.

It's nice to see "foot on the ball stuff in and around our own area" is actually bearing fruits too, it works very well when we draw them out then hit them with fast flowing attacking football a fine example being Tuesdays winner, there's also clearly very much a time and place for a long ball straight to our forward if the need arises, just like at Fylde. It does seem JM is mixing it up a bit better rather than passing for passing sake most the time, if that's his instruction or is it the keeper is being given more freedom to choose is anyone's guess, id imagine it's a bit of both.

I’ll put it another way. Neither side deserved anything from the game. It was a stalemate and neither team deserved to win. No Southend fans spoken to since I got back have said Southend played well. They watched a poor game like myself. You thought Southend probably had plenty left in their locker and could step up a gear if needed to You may be right and that may be why the fans here are not happy with the their team’s inconsistency this season. They could just be dossing their way to mid table obscurity. But I think Maher is to smart to allow that.
