I don't think he will listen. At the end of the day, as always the people will decide. The by election in Hartlepool will give us a good indication of what people think of Boris, as well as the the local elections. Hartlepool used to elect Labour MP's. It was a leave area, Boris delivered their will and for that they appreciate him even if he lied about a renovation of a room in downing Street. Well that's what the polls say anyway, although it is narrowing let's see. https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/keir-starmer-slumps-as-boris-johnson-bounces- [Post edited 2 May 2021 19:34]

Maybe just maybe on 17:27 - May 2 by Bazza | Actually didn’t say Boris and Starmer are the same but they do have similarities as I mentioned. Thank goodness there’s not two of either man! Like you I’m not wedded to any party, all have strengths and plenty of weaknesses. On here I comment on dogmatic views stuck on one party viewpoint. I confess to supporting Brexit like the majority (just) and think we should move on and try to improve implementation despite the EU bitterness. |
I accept that we are where we are and that we need to make the best of it. I would prefer we went forward with someone who was trustworthy and solid though.

Maybe just maybe on 14:29 - May 2 by Saintsforeverj | Actions speak louder than words. He might have said this, that and the other, but Boris did lockdown last autumn and he did lockdown from January for a very long time. He also insisted we were not part of the EU medicines system, so many lives have also been saved by the vaccine programme, that has only been so successful because of the actions of this government (the most successful vaccination programme in Europe in fact). Starmer wanted to be a part of the EU medicines agency, and therefore lives would have been lost that way, by his actions, even if he didn't say about bodies piling high. Boris is outspoken, he lies yes but you have to weigh everything up. Some may have preferred May personally for example, but she was useless at leading and getting anything done, although she was paralysed by the numbers in parliament. And then Boris called an election just like May did and got a huge majority. Thus was after he lied about the reason for proroguing parliament. People it seems don't mind a few lies, if we get things done. [Post edited 2 May 2021 14:31]

On all three occasions by the time he locked down it was too late, the damage was done, the first lockdown was so late he need'nt have bothered because infection rates were already falling, it was a fuçk up from start to finish.

You don’t think he listened to the medics advice? Doesn’t fit that fit your political bias eh? There is no precedent or guidelines for lockdown timing under this new virus, you make it sound like missing a bus. The medical advisors were pulling for later, businesses pushing for sooner. Even now there is no certain answer.

Good research, point taken. In my defence there are always ‘experts’ giving contrary views, particularly among the scientists.

Like other leaders he sought medical advice and in important aspects ignored it. The decisions made were made by Boris not the medical advisors. We are an island, we should be performing hugely better than the rest of Europe. Take a look at the death and infection rates on any other island nation. We are performing worse than any other EU country. Boris allowed over 20m people to fly into this country, including from Covid red zones after the rest of Europe were shutting down. You can spin this any way you want. but Boris fücked up massively

Whatever you say about lockdown timing the vaccination program has been a massive success. Thank goodness we're not still under the EU ubergruppenfuhrers

The vaccination roll out is definitely a success story, but don’t get me started on the money we are wasting on track and trace, with owners, consultants and shareholders making big bucks at our expense

Yes it is hindsight as the PM has to make a call about everything from the economy, lockdown effects on mental health, to scientific advice. Various scientists have been saying different things. As it turns out, we have one of the best vaccination programmes in the world, we are the first in the EU to start coming out of lockdown, so as much as he got wrong, he has also got things right. The NHS never collapsed as it has in Brazil, India, and a few EU countries, so we have got through it better than some at the end of the day. As for Cummings, who is going to listen to that Covid rule breaking lying trouble maker, you? [Post edited 3 May 2021 13:55]

He didn't and that's a documented fact, he also missed the first six cobra meetings because he was too busy picking out 1800 quid a roll wallpaper with his new burd.

I recall a massive lobby to lockdown and an equally massive lobby to delay for as long as possible as the so-called “Great British Public” were thought to be unlikely to accept a lock down of more than a few weeks, so starting it too soon would be counter-productive. Hobson’s Choice.

Think you should look up the definition of ‘fact’. It doesn’t mean ‘as stated by the Guardian/Mirror’ Burd ? Successive PMs have spent a fortune on No10 decor eg Tony Blair. I don’t agree with it but it not at all unusual sadly. Expensive wallpaper on government buildings was the fetishised of Blair’s mate, Lord Irvine

Don’t they get an allowance of £30,000 a year for decorating and maintenance? Seems a lot (my first flat cost £27,500) but he is supposed to have spent £200k. I think the issue is really who footed the bill initially and what are they likely to get in return as a thank you? Even if he stays for a full term he is only entitled to a total of £150k so he is well overspent already.

Difficult decisions certainly. But not impossible that the peculiar character flaws of this PM may have lead him to bad decisions. We will find out what happened and then we can judge him. And I am interested in what cummings has to say. ‘Hindsight’ could be thrown at anything that goes wrong because necessarily there is more information available after it has gone wrong than before. But getting things right involves making the correct calls in advance, and it’s possible to get them culpably wrong.

Yes, I am going to listen to him. And to what anyone says in response, including Boris. Are you writing his testimony off completely before you’ve even heard it?

Do you remember what a “good” death toll looked like? 20,000 wasn’t it? It is now over 127,000 so I don’t think we have too much to crow about. As for Cummings, why shouldn’t we listen to him? He was the right hand man for an important period of time and some thought he was actually running the country. Unlike Hohnson, who just lies through his teeth and doesn’t give a hoot whether we believe him or not, Cummings seems to have kept quite a lot of hard evidence to back up his claims. It would appear that Johnson has backed stabbed the wrong person in Cummings. [Post edited 3 May 2021 15:12]

Blair paid the excess out of his own pocket, and he didn't spend two hundred grand of someone else's money. He also didn't pick the wallpaper while thousands of people were falling ill and there was a grave shortage of PPE.
