Put yourself in his shoes for a moment and think about confronting someone with an AR15 assault rifle and you with a side arm. Is it right to call him a coward, a 54 year old man probably untrained in the art of shooting someone dead. Am I the only one who feels sympathy for this chap.

He’s right to an extent though Hump this has been happening for years under different presidents and surely anyone that goes on the rampage killing lots of people in one go must be mentally ill in some way yeah?

Of course. Trump is not to blame for this atrocity. Doesn't mean you can't criticize his response. We have mentally ill people in this country too. Most countries have them. Why does only America suffer so many of this particular type of incident? The easy availibility and fetishisation of guns IMO.

The latest escape goat on 23:47 - Feb 23 by PozuelosSideys | Right. You keep on talking politics while oblivious to the fact Trump had zero to do with this incident, and many, many incidents before it. The root cause is guns being legal which is something thats been around as long as the US itself has. Presidents such as Obama and Bush are just as complicit in acts such as this one as Trump is. Might want to turn your American spellchecker off too. |
I agree Trump is not responsible for this incident. It's not true that Obama is just as complicit. He made it harder for the mentally ill to get hold of guns. Trump overturned that days after becoming president. Assault weapons were banned when Bush took over. He could have tried to extend the ban but refused to. I'd say both are more complicit in the present situation than Obama. And a spelling mistake. Well done.

Obama is complicit. Just like Trump is. Just like Bush was. Just like Clinton was etc etc. They did NOTHING. Words mean NOTHING. The American political system allows lobbying from various groups and businesses as you know. Politicians are ineffective against it. The uncomfortable truth is that a sizeable percentage of American citizens like guns. They believe they are a good thing and they will fight for them. If that wasnt the case then the NRA membership would be nowhere and they wouldnt have the influence. Their culture is different to ours. If enough Americans wanted guns made illegal, they would be made illegal over night. Simple fact is that they dont. Trump doing stuff like he has done is just playing with the edges. Their country is awash with guns. If somebody wanted to get one, they can get one. The only reason you say Obama isnt as complicit is because he is a Democrat. Fine. Whatever you choose. But President, after President, after President have done a grand total of bugger all, and its just getting worse. Cause and effect.

Why not go the whole hog trumpy and arm all the students and the dinner ladies - the NRA would give their full backing to that. You have a President who is a laughing stock the whole world over. Pathetic excuse for a human being. |
Yes blame the President when the whole of the State system failed to prevent a Psychopath from buying Guns and killing those kids and teachers. Not Just a Psychopath but a law breaking psychopath. Which immediately excludes him from legally buying any kind of Gun. Of course that's Trump's fault.

Exactly my point. Trump is just the patsy these days. We are constantly being peppered with the right jab to the face, when its the left hook people need to be worried about. The focus of everyones attention is on him and i wonder whats going on in the shadows. Think over here we call it "burying bad news". The attention has been diverted away from what happened, the person that commited it and the reasons how it was possible for him to commit it. Instead --> Trump is bad. Trumps fault. Roped and doped.

Courtesy of NBC: "President Obama’s ambitious effort to overhaul the nation’s gun laws in response to December’s school massacre in Connecticut suffered a resounding defeat Wednesday, when every major proposal he championed fell apart on the Senate floor. It was a stunning collapse for gun-control advocates just four months after the deaths of 20 children and six adults in Newtown led the president and many others to believe that the political climate on guns had been altered in their favor. The national drive for laws that might prevent another mass shooting unraveled under intense pressure from the gun rights lobby, which used regional and cultural differences among senators to prevent new firearms restrictions. One by one, the Senate blocked or defeated proposals that would ban certain military-style assault rifles and limit the size of ammunition magazines. But the biggest setback for the White House was the defeat of a measure to expand background checks to most gun sales. The Senate defied polls showing that nine in 10 Americans support the idea, which was designed to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill." Roll forward to Trump and what did he do? The House voted in February 2017 to overturn the Obama Administration rule, one of several regulations instituted by the former president that were undone last year using a law known as the Congressional Review Act. The CRA allows Congress to overrule recently enacted regulations passed by the executive branch. What was the Obama Administration rule they speak of? Oh yeah, "The Obama-era regulation, which was enacted after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, would have required the Social Security Administration to send records of beneficiaries with severe mental disabilities to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System. The measure would have affected about 75,000 people found mentally incapable of managing their financial affairs." Obama tried on a number of occasions to do something about guns. He was faced with a Republican congress and senate who prevented him doing anything very much at all. He was able to bring in greater control over people with mental illness owning guns, which Trump then reversed. And at least he didn't have to write notes to himself, reminding him to show empathy when faced with survivors and friends and family of kids that had just been killed. Because he isn't a complete and utter sh*tty excuse for a human being. Unlike Trump. [Post edited 24 Feb 2018 13:02]

No. I'm not defending Obama because he's a Democrat. I'm defending him because he did actually do something. He would have done more but Republicans stopped him. And when Trump got in he reversed what Obama had done. Bill Clinton did something as well. He banned the sale of assault weapons for ten years. Bush let the ban expire when he got in. Do you disagree with anything I just said?

Course im not disagreeing with you. Obama tried to do something, but it was ineffective. I absolutely wish he was effective and that guns were outlawed in their society and every single one was removed from the hands of the public. But its a results business and it failed. American politics doesnt allow for it, neither does their culture. The appetite to solve this needs to come from the American public, not politicians. My point is that people are talking about Trump. Getting rid of him and whatever lack of any political nouse he has will not solve the issue. Plenty of Democrats are influenced by the NRA as well so its not cut and dried. American politics stinks in that respect. Its like blaming the soggy sticking plaster for not stopping the bleeding when theres a massive open wound which needs stitching up.

Yes. Lots of Americans like playing with guns. And nobody is advocating stopping that. Nobody is coming for their guns. Strawman. However 66% of Americans want stricter gun control laws and 67% want an assault weapon ban. http://time.com/5167216/americans-gun-control-support-poll-2018/ The NRA has five million members. That's less than 2% of Americans. And only 6-7% of American gun owners. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2015/10/15/most-gun-owners-dont-belo Hardly overwhelming support for the NRA. What the NRA does have is money. Lots of it. Provided by firearm manufacturers. That's where their power and influence comes from.

Aye. But a significant percentage still own one. The best guess is 42% https://edition.cnn.com/2018/02/15/politics/guns-dont-know-how-many-america/inde While these are still in circulation, there will still be thise issue. While individuals can still purchase one, there will still be this issue. Regardless of who the President is. I read the other day that the Florida Senator felt that by increasing the legal age to purchase a gun from 18 to 21 would improve things. Not like that makes a difference with stuff like alcohol eh. Its rubbish like this im talking about, they are playing with the edges when a complete root and branch change needs to happen. But wont. People will forget in a couple of weeks until the next time it happens. Power and money influences of course. But if the American public decided they wanted guns outlawed with heavy penalties, they would be. Having opinion polls are worthless. Actions are what counts.

If he genuinely worried about mentally ill people getting guns then why did he hand out thousands of guns to radical religious jihadist nut jobs in the Middle East?
