My "problem" with Stuart Lee is he's clever but rarely actually funny. That's not to say I don't sit back after one of his jokes and smile inwardly at a nicely though-out yarn, but he doesn't actually make me laugh.
The most I've laughed at a comedian (and this rather supports Loyal's "2 year lifespan" theory was at a Tony Law set. He was wonderfully surreal. I went to see him a few more times (nearly always up in London, always surreal, always funny) then a bit later on he played somewhere in the valleys where he was trying new (even more surreal) material. Dreadful
Frank Skinner seems consistently good. His Absolute Radio show is a favourite of mine though I've yet to see him in the flesh.

I think Stewart Lee is fantastic but you're right, you're not going to sit there clutching your ribs with the hilarity of it all. It's more of a wry smile and nodding head act. None the worse for it.
I'm also a big fan of Michael McIntyre. So shoot me.
The two funniest stand ups I've seen in the flesh were Harry Hill and Peter Kay.

Saw Harry Hill in the Grand a few years ago and he was fantastic. I agree about Peter Kay as well.
The wife dragged me to see Bill Bailey a couple of years ago and I was very pleasantly surprised.
Saw Steve Coogan in Cardiff and he was terrible. More than half the audience had left by the end.

I agree about Stewart Lee, very clever comedian. I like him a lot.
As for Michael McIntyre, well...

Jim Jeffries is probably the best around at the minute. The story he tells about taking his disabled mate to a brothel had me crying with laughter the first time I heard it.
Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

Bill Burr was in Bristol last night, I couldn't make it sadly. Daniel Kitson is consistently brilliant, again not rib ticking hilarious but very clever in his delivery.
