I'd be happy with a preferred 5 of Leon, Cork, Ki, Siggy and Routs but in case of injury / suspension / loss of form we have Leroy Fer.
We can alway drop Marv into the 10 slot in some matches should there be tired legs, we also have the option of a change of format to accommodate wingers.

Are we lacking a creative midfielder? Someone who can pick a pass and thread the ball into the striker.

Possibly but I think Ki and Cork need to step up

Our midfield is extremely average to be fair. The standard of the premier league is ramping up and we are still standing still maybe for the right financial reasons.

Leon is well into his 30's now and was part of our Championship side along with the over hyped Routledge. Ki was average at Celtic and slightly above average at Sunderland on loan. Cork impressed at times at Burnley on loan then failed to get in Southampton's side. Siggy is class but his form is indifferent this season. Emnes is another journey man who should move on now we have Fer who was poor at both QPR and Norwich.

Punching massively above our weight this season even in the position we are in at the moment.

Yeah a lot of work to be done in the summer, irrespective of what division we're in.

Let's just hope it's the premier league and we can attract people like Joe Allen

I'd say, regardless of Leon's age, we have a very strong midfield. We could afford to lose Ki without weakening it significantly. What we have is functional and efficient for the way we want to play.

Now we've signed a decent striker and fer who can play anywhere across the midfield or number 10, i hope Routledge is nowhere near the starting 11. Creates and scores absolutely nothing with is not what someone playing his role is supposed to be doing

Must admit, if we're looking at Dutch midfield filler, I'm at a loss why we went for Fer ahead of JdG.

JDG is not match fit. He is still recovering from his op.

I'd back him to get up to our speed quicker than Fer.

It's only a loan so I'm not criticising him, but I'd have preferred a different option.

Yup. Most premier teams have strengthened midfield over last couple of seasons and we've at best stayed still. Fer will not help.

benchwarmer is Fer, same as deGuz
Instead of rinsing him on here before he's played a minute, let's do the dance

Fair enough. Score one from the bench in his first few matches and we'll be singing his praises.

Yes I did watch the Everton game. There's no doubting his effort but I'm sorry, when you're playing his position in the premier league then you need to be able to do more than just run. He doesn't score and he doesn't assist. Gomis has taken a lot of stick and rightly so but Routledge Is just as bad

Hardly anyone has scored or made assists this season...

Completely different sorts of players, so there's no way Fer will be taking Rout's spot (and not should he).

Easy to turn that around. Leon was not expected to figure much this season, but has been invaluable in a crisis. Not arguing that we need a long term successor though.

Routledge wasn't part of our Championship midfield, has been a great servant and is underrated by a section of our support.

Ki was brilliant for us last season and Cork was superb after signing in January. Siggy is suffering because Gomis' game does not suit him like Bony's did and Emnes covers a variety of positions at a minimal cost, to be used in the case of emergency.

Fer is unlikely to play much, but may become one of those players who shines here after doing poorly elsewhere.

This 'extremely average' midfield was superb last year and it seems far more likely to me that our struggles this season can be put down to not adequately replacing Bony and Monk's struggles.

You know, Hobbes, some days even my lucky rocket ship underpants don't help.

I think Routledge has been one of our best ever signings, certainly one of the most underrated but what's he done this season? No goals? Any assists?

Personally if they're going two up front then it should be Ayew and Paloschi followed by Gomis. Routledge is an excellent squad player but I don't think he has a 'spot' in our team

Nutshell,

We're not short in central midfield, and we still have plenty of quality. For me our flanks are the real area we need to strengthen, but ultimately our squad is slightly unbalanced. Needs to be a turnover but we've got plenty to work on.

Looks like the whole idea of playing with width has been abandoned.

I actually think the centre of midfield is quite weak. Ki blows hot and cold from one season to the next, Cork is a decent squad player, a solid defensive midfielder but quite limited IMO and hopeless on the right of the diamond as he cant do anything going forward. Britton is quality but I worry about him playing every week. Gylfi is quality though - hopefully he can end the season strongly.

Should have signed Tom Carrol. He was clearly a talented boy and results were excellent when he was in the side. Pretty sure we could have had him for less than 5 million, too.

Routledge came close to scoring in a few games recently
Games I recall we won against the odds
He puts in a shift and is winning tackles
He has been close to perfect recently

I'm sure they'll take a look in the summer. He's on the last six months of his contract if i'm not mistaken.

Exactly, came close! He never takes his chances, never sets any up! He's being playing in a front 2 for a large part of he season and done nothing! We've got paloschi Ayew and siggy to play a front 3 now with fer and Gomis who can come in and play. Routledge is a championship standard player at best without doubt. Tries his best but he's nowher near good enough.

I'd imagine he will be on the bench now we have signed Paloschi. He can be excellent on his day and he has never been a striker. As you say, his end product is nowhere near good enough though
