Sandfields Pubs 20:44 - Jan 5 with 15035 viewsbonymine

Bored as f*ck here tonight so let's start a thread on the good old Sandfields pubs and a story attached to each of them and the Swans /The Vetch/Away fans etc.

Many have closed over the years but as a Sandfields boy myself I have some wonderful memories of these warm, welcoming ale houses (if you were a Swans fan anyway!) and the colourful characters who frequented them.

A Sunday lunchtime pub crawl through the Sandfields was always a pleasure to behold with my mates in the early 1980's ; cockles cheese pickles nuts & crisps on the bar to dip into 'on the house' ; very hygienic all this after peeing in the Gents after 10 pints too !!

God there must be loads of stories over the years, the pubs may have come and gone but the memories will last a lifetime.....

The Garibaldi - Joe Cleary/John the Bank (Everton fan too) / Philly James ....
Outside there for the Swans v Hull game in 2003 to stay in the League was the most tense atmosphere I've known around the Vetch.

The Clarence - one game v Stoke home me & my mate were late leaving before kick off when about 50 riot police turned up & surrounded the pub and didn't let us out ...bizarre !!

Always Remember watching the 1985 snooker World Final at the Gari Dennis Taylor beat Steve Davis in the early hours when a 'lock-in' with the curtains closed really meant something !!

He was Chris.I've done a lot of work of late in his sister's house Lyndsey and the tales she told about him would make our hair curl.

Terribly sad him going so early. I remember him well when he was a slip of a thing smiling, always, from ear to ear. Great company especially in Jubblys or the various after party's.

I do indeed although it's a bit different these days to what it was back then. 😜

On the rest of what you said, too true mate. I went to Oz for a year and Holland after that so wasn't on the scene for a few years. When I came back and saw him like that I had the shock of my life. He was well in by then.

I used to enjoy a few beers in the Paxton and the Clarence, frequented a few of the other's over the years as well,

I started drinking in the Paxton when I was 16 the Landlord & Landlady at the time were Dave & Maureen I then played for the darts team too great days got pissed on £5 on a Friday night (60p a pint) then won the chicken in the darts knockout competition ....up town then to Barons and say no more ..😉😉

Happy days indeed .....Boey and Tosh came in a lot after away games I remember Boey telling my Mam who was working behind the bar ‘I like my lemon top on the top not before’ with his pint of lager so I said to him how do you prefer your pint over your head or through the window ......😂😂 He soon apologised and normal service was resumed 👍 Davo and Les Chappell were regulars too 👍

Possibly, but that side of the road may just be StHelens. Wouldn't argue the toss over it though.
